use a really good mouse and keyboard control. see if the graphics can be turned up all the way w/out slowing down... ie, for pl still in the mid1 ghz range and still using a GeForce 4 or equivalant or higher.

look at macross voxp for some expample.

Actually, most of the Star Blazers/Space Cruiser Yamato line-up was re-released by Bandai a few years ago so they aren't as rare as they used to be, hense the drop in price...
