  1. Speaking of budgets - the ones these days allow them to go with their first ideas, which generally aren't that good. When the budgets are small (and the access to CG is limited) and they have to rethink their initial ideas - that is when the good stuff tends to appear.
  2. That may be so, but at least it cleans up the majority of the plot, and doesn't leave the audience scratching their heads at how underwhelming the conclusion is.
  3. Whut? Didn't say nuttin' about no soft Gees in the hood. Maybe Tochiro said it? The only thing I was thinking about saying is something about Hepburn and the difference between how Kanto and Kansai people pronounce the う. Just romanize everything in Hepburn. It mitigates a whole bunch of headaches! (see my sig for details. My translations for examples).
  4. This franchise is one of the rare ones where we can do that, and get away with it without stretching the movie series' internal logic. Ah, I was wondering if it was available when I made my post earlier about it. Glad that that's available, and even more glad that it was cut! True Lies has a couple of cringe inducing movies (the interrogation scene is... well...) Nevertheless, fully agree on The Abyss. Make sure its the Special Edition, and not the theatrical version (in short, the theatrical version was taken by studio execs and released before Cameron had finished the film, and it ended up missing a large chunk of its conclusion).
  5. In retrospect, T3 is infinitely better than T4. T4 has one good continuous shot - and its at the very beginning. After that... there's not much worth going on about it. T3 is kind of a guilty pleasure. It is NO WHERE near the same calibre as its predecessors, but if you approach it as a forgettable comedy-cum-action movie, its amusing. Dare I saw that it falls into the "so bad its good" category? (And I, too, don't like the John Connor character in that movie).
  6. They didn't. It was delayed (T3 also incorporates that into its plot). If one thinks a little deeper about it, if Judgment Day was stopped, how could the events of T1 and up to the end of T2 occur? T2 would have ended like one of the better episodes of Star Trek, with someone pressing a big reset button, and the John Conner as-we-know-him ceasing to exist. Nevertheless, the dialogue over a highway ending of T2 is infinitely better (and open ended) than the actual ending Cameron filmed and cut - that one actually indicated that Judgment Day never occurred, the Machines never came into existence, and portrayed a peaceful future. It may help if you take Sarah Conner's dialogue as the character's own opinion on events, and not what actual comes to (or has already) transpired.
  7. 1. panel lines (I'd describe panel lines over stickers\decals as something for someone with advanced skills) 2. it depends on what your putting them on. If its straight on the plastic, the panel lining pens and pencils work the snap. If its over paint, some kind of wash (currently I'm experimenting with black watercolour paint diluted with acrylic thinner. It works great on plastic, paint, and top coat, and tends to give some subtle weathering). The panel lining pens are definitely easiest when it comes to clean up - just use an eraser, or even your thumb! (note: only on plastic. It can become hellish to clean up on anything else) 3. I've tried both. It really depends on what your using to put the panel lines on, and what those lines are going over. Take care that some materials don't react well to each other, and gloss coats are a great way to keep them separate. On the other hand, gloss coats are another layer, and tend to reduce the depth and thickness of the panel lines! 4. no 5. sandpaper. Unless if you use water soluble paint and panel lining material, or pencil. Also, before you start putting on paint, I humbly suggest doing a little bit of filing and sanding to reduce or eliminate seam lines as much as possible. Even just a little bit of sanding with an emery stick (for polishing nails), makes a huge difference!
  8. Agreed. In a way they did - when they deployed the drill. However, without knowing exactly where it is (finding it being one of the current focuses of the overall mission), they apparently decided to not try other higher risk things that could make it jump. The mission scientist even think its lying almost on its side! No point in really trying to make it move if all it's going to do is ram headfirst into a cliff face, after all. Nevertheless, until it gets more sunlight (= power), reactivates from standby mode, and they reestablish two-way communications, there's nothing anyone can do right now.
  9. To clarify: it's relative. Time for you stays the same, but for everyone else it speeds up OR (from the perspective of people on Earth) time stays the same for them, but for you it slows down [not that you would notice it]. Even for us on Earth, time is flowing slightly different from other parts of the galaxy and universe in general (something about both our relative speed and proximity to gravity). For example, GPS won't work correctly if the clocks in the satellites aren't running a few microseconds faster than the ones on the surface of the Earth! What causes it is the universal constant of the speed of light. No matter how fast you go, you can neither surpass that speed, or make light go faster (or slower). So, because of that constant, if your speed changes, the passage of time (for you) also changes).
  10. It made it onto the TV news story here in Japan, but I think they focused mostly on the "they landed" aspect, and not the rest of the mission - as some of adult students (50 to 70 years old) they were floored when I told them that the main probe has been flying for 10 years, and that it took that long to meet up with the comet, near the orbit of Jupiter. The last article I read on BBC last night before bed suggested the possibility of using the harpoon mechanisms to "launch" it from its current position, but they weren't even going to consider doing that until they knew more about Philae's current surroundings.
  11. That's just the pack - like the VF-1's FAST packs are limited to 150 seconds at maximum thrust. In atmosphere: unlimited (up to the limit that the pilot can endure, that is). In space: limited. Much longer than the aforementioned 150 seconds and 15 minutes, but no where near as long as when they're in atmosphere. The only other endurance number that we have is how long the VF-1 can hover: 70 seconds at 13,000 kg x2 thrust, 420 seconds at 11,500 kg x2 thrust. All VFs that came later most likely have greater endurance, but nothing official has been published about it. So, refer to Gubaba's answer for the general endurance guideline.
  12. Revised: Model Graphix #299: http://www.mtranslation.host-ed.me/OTmiscmagazines.php - majorly reworked the descriptions gleaned from the picts. The stuff on the YF-25 Prophecy (the only parts of the magazine that matter to the wider Macross universe) have been significantly upgraded (read: more readable, IMHO). My translation pace is starting to drop off these days... on the other hand, I'm publishing a piece of art every day! Check out my DA page for some Macross-like art.
  13. Revised: Newtype Ace Feb. 2012 Special Appendix 1: Macross F The Movie - My Best Memory: http://www.mtranslation.host-ed.me/OTmiscmagazines.php - mostly unchanged (formatting aside). But one MAJOR translation error has been fixed. Namely: "The respective futures of Sheryl & Ranka, and Aruto, who flew off" fixed to the correct: "The respective futures that Sheryl, Ranka, and Aruto chose."
  14. I didn't find the seam lines especially bothersome (mind you, I only focused on the ones on the arms, legs, and back - the other ones were a combination of too small or not noticeable. The main problem area I had was the leg thrusters and gun attachment. The leg thrusters were annoying because there's no way to really do them without painting them and the legs first (although the armour seam in the back of the legs makes panel lining easy, it was a headache I decided to skip when I was planning out how to paint it). The gun attachment point... was that thing designed wrong? It doesn't fit snugly in the hole, and gluing the angled part on the rear to the backpack for support (what I ended up doing) puts it out of alignment when resting on the support piece...
  15. Finished off the HG V2 Gundam. Parts of this kit were extremely fiddly (specifically the arms), and the weak torso joint, moving backpack parts and elbow/shoulder armour make it a real challenge to get it posed in a half-decent looking pose. The core fighter that comes with the kit was also disappointing - no moving parts, and, surprisingly, no sticker for the canopy glass! The good parts of the kit are the faithful reproduction of the arms (even though they are fiddly), and the moving parts of the backpack and feet. Aside from panel lining/light weathering, the kit is unpainted/unmodified.
  16. This kit didn't go together very smoothly - despite starting to lay down paint still on the sprue! For starters, the kit is molded in dark blue, and any light colours on top of that required multiple coats. I ended up losing some of the finer details due to that. The upper arms are extremely fiddly. I ended up having to permanently glue the upper arms, as the pieces kept popping apart when the elbow joint was rotated! Some of the other joints are stiff, but that might be due to the aforementioned paint problem. I ended up using super glue to affix the thrusters on the back of the legs and backpack, and the gun and its support. Only the backpack thruster went on smoothly. And once everything was finished painting and so on, I realized that there aren't decals for the stripes on the forearms! So, another round of masking, painting, and cleaning up. >.< At least the panel lining went smoothly (though most of it didn't remain in the grooves in the feet). What are your thoughts on the Christmas colours? The green was much brighter than I expected (though, it should be perfect for the Sound Force VF-17 I'm working on). I'm still working on the Zentraadi figure that comes with it (the kit's gimmick is that you can either make it either stand alone, or only the upper half of the figure inside the torso of the Nujaderu Gaa. Here he is reenacting one of the famous scenes in SDFM. Not quite a good match for the Bandai 1/100 Battle Pod... But a good match for the Bandai 1/144 VF-11C, and HG Gundam!
  17. Updated: SDFM DYRL PS1 Game Mail-in Gift: Minmei's Last Message: http://www.mtranslation.host-ed.me/OTother.php - no major changes. Hopefully the polishing I did will make it all that more comprehensible. Macross Frontier Archives: 3D & Setting Document Collection: http://www.mtranslation.host-ed.me/OTmiscbooks.php#MF - did quite a bit more polishing on this one. Although the hand drawn lineart for the VF-25 in this book is awesome-sauce, it sucks that there aren't any helpful notes to indicate what a bunch of the details are. >.<
  18. Pash! Animation File 02: Macross Frontier: http://www.mtranslation.host-ed.me/OTmiscmagazines.php Somehow my "quick" project of slapping the existing translation into php ended up being a 2 week marathon of translating! I always intended to do the section on Gaul 4 and the Vajra Homeworld, but I also ended up doing the sections on the facilities/locations inside the Frontier Fleet (how many other sources have gone into detail about that?). I also found it neat that they wrote it from the angle of a sales brochure come travel magazine. A refreshing break from the usual way such information is presented, eh?
  19. I've found duct tape also leaves a nasty residue on things (thankfully it wasn't a model). Have you tried using the straight edge of a credit card and warming the adhesive with a hairdryer just before scraping?
  20. If you wanted to generalize form the the start, why did you try to be specific in the first place? I have nothing against the generalizations you've made. It's just really bad form to try to fob off generalizations as facts, and then be dismissive when those facts are corrected. (Does it even need to be mentioned that those facts support the point you're trying to make?)
  21. Research first, please. Age of consent: as young as 13 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of_consent_in_Asia#Japan Drivers licence: 16 to 21, depending on class http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driving_license_in_Japan#Categories Graduation: 15 (Senior High School is not compulsory, though the vast majority continue on to it) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_Japan Marriage: 20 (with parental consent: 18 for males, 16 for females) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriageable_age#Asia Voting: 20 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voting_age#J Drinking: 20 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_drinking_age#Asia Fun fact: most people in Japan don't rush to get a driver's licence first chance they get. In fact, a lot of people don't have them, as most people don't even need cars!
  22. Short answer: it's more Japanese than Macross (in the sense of Samurai drama). Long answer: why is Star Trek popular? Why not Space Above And Beyond or any number of other SF serials that ran for one or two seasons on TV? Who can really answer these kinds of questions? Gundam touched a nerve and a group of people locked onto it. Macross didn't have the same kind of effect.
  23. Just change the domain name, and the link should still work (aside from the new host, nothing has been changed on the site).
