That light gray portion does appear to be white in the anime and the fins' colour should match the vertical strip on the other side of the leg.
I believe they do that intentionally

This VF-2SS toy from Evolution absolutely does not appear to be designed with any SAP attachment points. There's no slots, holes, pegs, tabs etc at all in evidence for connecting a SAP to.
