  1. The Japanese subtitles for the movies are (as everyone probably knows) Jo (序), Ha (破), and Kyuu (急).

(I can't think of any good way to translate them into English. They usually get represented as "Prelude," "Division," and "Quickening," but those meanings don't fit here. Noh plays are divided into three "acts," and the acts are not numbered, but titled "Jo," "Ha," and "Kyuu." So it really should be something like Beginning, Middle and End, or Introduction, Development, and Climax.)

Anyway, 3.0 no longer appears to be called 急, but rather "Q." No idea why, unless it's just for cleverness's sake.

I think they're still keeping the Noh acts naming. Say "Q" out loud.

    See? ;)

  2. How would you be able to judge the validity of those points raised, without having seen M7?

Lineart? Illustrations? Youtube clips? (you know you can basically watch the whole series in there, don't you?) Summaries?

And what about Koji Kabuto? forget guitar controllers. he's the only one i've seen pilot a mecha using an exercise bow bar. :p

    Koji Kabuto > Basara

    ...ANYDAY!

  3. There's a million other details in the series that complicate the simple narrative of 'Macross 7 Kiddie Face on Robots poo poo rainbow anime" theme.

Be it as it may be, it's precisely that "kiddie face on robots poo poo rainbow anime" envelope that prevents me from watching M7 AND ENJOYING it, and it seems I'm not the only one.

I'm not trying to convince any of you guys who did like it to turn your opinions, but as well, you gotta admit that the points expressed by those who don't are well sustained, be it for stylistic, story-telling or jerk-guitar-piloting-singer issues.

    Peace :)

  4. For whatever reasons, a guitar-hero flight control scheme is plain stupid.

And one of the many many reasons why I won't watch M7 ever.

    Keith:

yeah, I've watched other anime, also super robot anime (love Mazinger)... but.... honestly....

THIS.IS.MACROSS!!!! Not some generic super robot show. And Macross oughta have some decency. M7 totally lost it.

  5. To me that read more like Friendly Fire was supposed to be a character building episode since he was going to die within a few episodes. Assuming not much else was changed to accomodate it, he could easily have been killed in the escape from Gallia 4 in episode 13, whether by the Dimension Eater or the confrontation with Brera. The midpoint of the series, anyway, since 25 episodes doesn't make for clean halves.

Actually, IIRC, more than one of us were wondering if Michael had survived the scape from Galia 4, when Sheryl took control of the VF. I guess that at that point the decision was made to not kill Michael... yet.

  6. I am on the side of those who believe Yamato have some of the ugliest boxes in the world.

I like to think this is because they spend so much time on the product itself that they don't really want to rack up additional costs on the box, box art etc.

That said - the V.2 boxes are enjoyable IMO because they are not so monotone. I too like the 1D box design. The destroids also have some pretty fanstastic (surprisingly) box designs.

As for Bandai - yeah - their Soul of Chogokin Boxes are great. The Gundam Boxes at least have nice pictures.

The DX boxes...leave much to be desired... IMO..

But again - this is all secondary to the thing that really matters: Yoko's boobs.

    Pete

Perhaps the only Yamato boxes I was interested about were the Miryia Super&Strike VF-1A and the Hikaru VF-1J ones. I own a VF-1A Max DYRL, and boy, does the box suck big time!

Yoko who? If it's Matsugane, I certanlly agree with your assertion ^_^

  7. 50-years old (written in 1968 or 1969 IIRC) WTF!!!! Buy a calcuator!! AAARRGHHHH!!!!

Good work bringing up Andromeda though. Havent seen the new mini-series, but the original film, which has already been mentioned, is FANTASTIC, and one of the best attempts at making a realistic science fiction film. Great stuff.

    Taksraven

Hahahahaha, damn! My bad. *goes out to buy calculator* :p

Hadn't heard about the 70's movie. Read the book only a couple years ago.

Now I'm not that curious about the mini-series after the review. Was sort of expecting a shitty job, anyway.

  8. A.S.S ROCK-1:

A Macross Class fighter, named ASS-1 after Alien Space Ship 1, filled to the brink with ASS ROCK performers in tight spandex, 80s hair, glossy lip-stick and eye-shadow all singing songs that would do Spinal Tap proud.

That sounds so much like visual kei, that you may actually have a point there

    Something like this?

  9. I've got to put my vote for the TV series. To me, the movie is very pretty but very empty. Characterization suffers greatly in DYRL, and I very much disagree with the opinion that the DYRL version of the love triangle was somehow better than the TV version, or that it was somehow a more mature storyline.

Almost every character except Hikaru, Misa, and Minmay are reduced to paper-thin backdrops in DYRL. Scenes such as Max and Milia's duel and Kakizake's death have no resonance or impact at all, 'cause you never know these people. They're included simply as homage to the TV series. Even Roy's death, while marginally more involving, is flat as he's reduced to an obnoxious, borderline misogynist drunkard instead of the seasoned mentor and friend that he is in the series.

As for the love triangle, it's the TV series that gives it all its depth and emotion. You watch Hikaru grow and mature as a person as he evolves from his crush on the self-absorbed Minmay to a deeper emotional connection to Misa. And it's the post-final-battle episodes that really make it all pay off, as Minmay finally starts to grow up too, realizing what she's lost. Rather than seeing the last episodes as the "slow down", for me those are the episodes that make the series worthwhile, rising it above a simple action story to a real character drama.

While it boasts better animation and some better songs, DYRL just can't hold a candle to the series.

I couldn't have said it better. Definitely agree with you.

    TV all the way.

It's what makes DYRL? a classic, the love for the characters you already know... only prettified.

  10. Could any of the following movies be considered science fact (said with tongue firmly in cheek)?

    1) Stealth.

    2) Independance day.

    3) The Final Countdown.

    4)The Andromeda Strain.

Honestly, I don't think this thread can realistically go very far, given the dearth of science fact movies that are not actual documentaries.

    Graham

The Andromeda Strain was an HBO-produced mini-series that aired my mid-2008 based on the same-name book by Michael Crichton, right?

Loved the book, considering it's 50-years old (written in 1968 or 1969 IIRC) and full of old-tech techno-babble, but well grounded bibliography, as was usual in Crichton's books.

Would love to watch the mini-series

  11. I already posted my opinion on both videos. Definitely worth a puke

    ----------

    You suck, dude!

Posting ORIGINAL material and passing it out as Robocrap???? Guess you all Homotech-fans are so envy because the lousy ass movie you got from Shadow Chronicles.

    This is MACROSS FRONTIER.

    Period.

  12. Also, thanks for answering a question of mine! I wondered why the 777 i flew on used its inner wing flaperons for roll control rather than the ailerons when the ailerons would seem to be the more efficient choice. I wonder why they even have ailerons on the wings then... surely deleting the ailerons would yield more space for fuel etc.

Unless I make some terrible and stupid mistake (and David would take care of it no doubt), airliners do use ailerons but only at low speeds (right after taking off and on landing approach). Perhaps because spoilers don't generate enough drag at low speeds to create the desired roll? Ailerons would have more momentum, since they're farther from the airplane's center line, thus being more efficient levers at low speeds.

  13. I like being under this rock, its nice and cool in the summer.

You may be entitled to your opinion but I am also entitled to mine.

    End of argument.

    Taksraven

    Entitled to your opinion, yes.

But be warned that out speaking a generalizing opinion with surely include people that doesn't fit your mentioned archetype, and people will usually complain about it.

So I agree with bandit. No one says you should like tats, but don't put everyone with one in the same box.

  14. Tried the demo on PS3 during the weekend.

The graphics are plain "ok" for a latest generation console. The physics sorta suck, the stats are way too off and the camera/display is plain stupid in the OFF mode. Sure, you can see your own stunts and all that, but it's a pain trying to get anything in front of you to shoot at.

I'll pass on this one and will keep hoping Ace Combat gets a decent comeback to the PS.
