  1. In the opening sequence for SDF Macross, we see the SDF-1 flying out of a cloud formation on earth, with main guns firing. Of course, this isn't in the series, but does anyone know if there's a story behind it? Deleted scene? Animated just for the opening? It's a cool scene, and would have been awesome to see extended. It would be a cool thing to model

  2. About to start the new Regult, but wondering if anyone has suggestions on the build. I've heard it's got lots of seam lines.
only videos i can find on youtube are japanese and don't show much of the build. I like building in sub assemblies, but like to be prepared ahead of time if there are easier ways people have figured out

ALPS is still the most affordable desktop option, unfortunately. OKI makes a color+white desktop laser printer for about $6000, but the results are crap because it doesn't hold onto the sheet between the print passes for white (background) and color (foreground), so you end up with misregistration/misalignment for designs at the scale we care about. They do make one that works the way we want, but it will set you back at least $30,000 and it's quite large. I'm pretty sure that Toyhax uses some kind of screen printing approach. Also not cheap.

its sad that 3d printers are so cheap now, and good options for home printing are still prohibitive.

A while back i was going to provide both a scan of original 1/55 decal sheets in addition to a custom drawn decal set for all four major DYRL valkyries, with more to follow on later, to the guys at reprolabels (responsible for transformers reproduction sticker sheets) but they weren't interested on two grounds: first, they didn't think there was enough interest (they print on demand... not sure how thats a concern), and second,  they were sure Harmony Gold would completely sue them out of existence if they offered them... wonder when they changed their minds.

With the advent of the 1/60 and 1/48 scale markets, the days of the 1/55 collectors/customs have largely gone down in the west. You'll find a very tiny niche market probably, but if you're wanting to make money, I wouldn't get your hopes up.

i don't do it to make a fortune.
I make sets that I want, how I want them. first and foremost. it just so happens that early on, people asked me to sell them sets of what i had done, so now, when i make myself a set, i make it available to other people.
If i print a few sets and they sit on ebay for a few months, no skin off my back. I just want my own figures to look good.

There still might be a market for a select group of customizers and collectors. Just not sure how big that market would be.

Maybe cross post interest in other media platforms could garner more potential customers.

Do you have a sample to show of your current progress?

I think Anazasi used to make these sets. I believe I still have some in my customs piles.

Wish you luck on your project.

    Oh, i just literally started.
I've got my reference images from the various sticker sheets for the toys, and i just started placing the tape on the figure for the shape and size as the starting base.

  6. I'm in the process of designing my own 1/55 conversion sticker set for Transformer Jetfire into Roys VF-1S, and it occured to me that this is a good opportunity to design not only a toy accurate reproduction set, but to enhance the toy with hyper details such as from the Hasegawa 1/72 waterslide sheets.

Would there be a market for such an upgrade, or, just keep it to what was original to the toy?

So, for those interested, I'll leak a bit of info here.  Long story short, I've been able to recently work with ToyHax.com/Reprolabels.  (For those that collect TFs or Joe, they're well known for their repro sticker sheets and original sheets - quality is incredible.)

Anyway, they consulted with me on the 1/55 DYRL VF-1S Strike decals and invested in an artist and Macross fan (friend of mine with a wicked portfolio - did work for Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, Coke, etc.) and created the attached.  They are currently making some adjustments to a couple minor things and in the process of creating a guide for sticker placement, but you should see this up on their site soon (I'd guess the next month or so?).

I'll likely start a thread for this when it's officially released because they've agreed to garner feedback from collectors so that if this sells well, they'll invest in other sticker sheets (think 1/55 TV VF-1S, 1/3000 SDF-1, etc.).  I'll post some polls at that time.

i just bought this set from Toyhax, and realised it doesn't have the factory details.
What I need is a set to convert a junker Jetfire back into Roys VF-1S

Your painting is GREAT at that scale. Come out a bit with the camera so we can get a fuller look of the two at a better scale.

Hmmm... I don't know. They all wear the same uniform and the same helmet, right? So if you paint them differently, that could work.

What changes would need to be made to the base Hikaru sculpt? Let me know and I will work on it.

Max - He would be just like Hikaru, right? Maybe I could thin the body, but keep the head the same, or slightly thinner.

Milia - She would be more delicate, thinner and shorter than Max I guess. And then there's the bossom issue...

max would need glasses, or if you do the space version, with the full helmet, that would work for both as well.
Milia always gets a repaint of the male figures. It would just be nice to get a more feminine body frame. she's also been known to let her hair down under her helmet.

here is a full shot. 1:72

  9. GAWDAMIT!!

i glued the head in place, had glue on my knuckle, touched the wing, and now there is super glue over the top of the wing.
going to strip it down when the new decals arrive and paint the wing from scratch later.

Going to try recasting some pilots now.
