Was thinking of trying to get the VF-171EX (Maruyama Version) of this Valk but reading the reviews gives me a little pause.  I like that version because of the Itasha graphic on it's back.  What's your guys overall opinion of the Maruyama version?  Does it suffer from the same issues as the other VF171's or is the juice worth the squeeze?

I have three VF-171s (Alto's EX, Luca's RVF, and a cannon fodder). No Maruyama, but I can give you my experience with the others. Alto I've transformed a few times, it's actually been very reliable - no broken parts, no yellowing, etc. The transformation's a pain in the butt, however, so after the last transformation I decided to just leave it in battroid. I never transformed Luca's, because the battroid looks super wonky on that one, but it's been very solid in fighter. I got the cannon fodder this last year to leave in fighter mode, and it had broken triangles out of the box (I paid extra for an unopened box) and was literally disintegrating in my hands as I tried to transform it just enough to put on the super parts and transform it back. So my take is that the white 171s are generally fine (I actually like my Alto 171EX quite a bit, despite the frustrating transformation), and the Maruyama one should be the same if that's the one you want to grab. I'd avoid the cannon fodder unless you really like the design and are okay with it being damaged - I don't think there are any CF's without broken triangles at this point.

I love that there are more of them available (especially after the initial rush), but I wonder, is this one of those things where the foreign audience really latched onto a different character than the Japanese audience did?

I think there's also a weird market fracturing going on between the TV and DYRL releases. I prefer the DYRL designs and I figure it's a safe bet Bandai will eventually get around to milking the mold for most of the main cast, so I took a pass on the TV Roy. DYRL is much more popular in Japan compared to the show, as I understand it?

I have quite a soft spot for it, since it was my first real Macross series, though I wouldn't quite rank it as my favorite anymore even though I have more Valkyrie II's than any other model of VF in my collection.

I re-watched it recently with a friend and honestly, it's a lot better than I remember it? Like you, I had a lot of fondness for it since it was the first proper anime I bought on VHS, but I was unsure how the friend would respond. They liked it well enough, though. It's also very specifically my early 90s aesthetic jam, so the great animation,* designs, and the over-exposed blue is doing a lot more to carry the show than how much I like Hibiki as a character.

*Block out the animation in the sixth episode when they ran out of money.

I've lived half my life in Japan, and I've never heard of a package being left unattended.  Whether or not a signature is needed, the delivery person is required to hand the package to a resident (and yes, they wear masks and gloves nowadays), and only after they've confirmed with said resident that the name and address are correct.  Anything else would be considered irresponsible, a dereliction of duty and cause for dismissal.

If nobody's home, a second or third attempt will be made that day, followed by a fourth the following day; after that, you've probably got to call and specify a time for re-delivery.  Most "attempted delivery" notification cards include the driver's cell phone number, so you can call them and arrange a time that works for both of you.

As I understand it, these policies are not the result of crime, but simply to eliminate the possibility of crime.

I got a Ring a little bit after the start of pandemic, mainly because my doorbell was busted but also because I don't live in a great area and I wanted insurance in case anything got stolen. I found out that most delivery services weren't even trying to ring the doorbell - DHL just hurls my expensive Valks at my door, takes a photo, then takes off. Forget waiting for a signature, it'd be great if they'd just ring the doorbell to let me know I had a delivery so it wasn't sitting on my porch. We were lucky enough to score a PS5 a couple weeks ago and they just left it there, in the clearly marked PS5 box, without ringing the bell. It's insane.

The Macross logo is now more prominent than the Robotech one on most of their merchandise.

Every time I went to Comic-con the last few years (not 2020, obviously), I'd get a bunch of friends texting me that they had Macross merch in the exhibit hall. I'd have to keep explaining that no, despite the logo, it was Robotech merch and I wasn't going to give HG any money. It helps that there's rarely any HG-branded stuff that isn't terrible.

I don't know how much of it is that the Macross brand is finally starting to outpace the RT brand over here, or that HG's stunts are more widely known and the Robotech brand is more toxic than it used to be. Maybe a bit of both.

Random aside: a show I worked on once had its premiere party at the Harmony Gold Theater.

Incredible! Not only that someone made a recording of such an unpopular show back in the day, but that it managed to survive to the digital age!

There are two Southern Cross LPs, actually:

https://www.discogs.com/ja/Yuji-Dan-Haruhiko-Wada-Ken-Satoh-超時空騎団サザンクロス-シャワーコロン-Southern-Cr/release/5515847 (I picked this one up as a Christmas gift for my partner since we were enjoying Southern Cross and both like vinyl)

Honestly, it's a good soundtrack for the time, even if it wears very thin about halfway through the series. Opening song is still a banger, though.

It was a very snug fit for my VF-4A. At first the handle seemed too wide, but I applied some gentle pressure and wiggled it a little and it eventually worked. The gunpod is essentially held in place via friction. Unless I did something wrong. :unknw:

Mine kept getting stuck halfway in and I was convinced I was doing something wrong and was going to mar the plastic on the fighter. Once it got in there, it was super solid though.

This is strange, I just checked two Yamato toys, a 1J max and the 1s LV... Both have skinny handles. Where did that fat handle come from?

I checked my VF-4A's gunpod versus my Arcadia VF-1S and the 1S definitely had a noticeably fatter handle. I figured that it was easier for them to shave off the handle to make it work with the existing slot in the VF-4 than it was to adjust the slot in the VF-4, but if the Yamato mold was the slimmer handle, then maybe that wasn't the case? I don't have any Yamato VF-1s to compare, unfortunately.

  9. Yeah, I recall it being work conflicts/COVID supply chain issues. Very understandable, but since Arcadia doesn't provide any sort of stand and I can't even find their simple display stand on the secondary market, there aren't many alternatives unless you accept the weird canon issues of everything being supported by an SDF-1 launch arm.

Also, is there any mechanism for mounting the gunpod in fighter mode? There's a slot in the undercarriage in front of that fold-out transformation peg that looks like it would be ideal, but it seems like it'd be a *very* tight fit and I can't find any product photos that support doing that. I never had the VF-4G but I remember people saying there wasn't any way to mount the gunpod in fighter mode on that one.

EDIT: For some reason I thought the Arcadia re-release of the VF-4G came with a gunpod, but re-watching Jenius' review I guess neither the Yamato or the Arcadia came with one.

Thank you @ErikElvis, its not anime accurate, but it sure looks good with Super Parts on.

Here's another shot of the VF-1J Super Valkyrie. Enjoy!

I did this with my TV supers, it's a great look. I pulled the trigger on the supers before getting a TV Roy, and eventually decided to just pass on the Roy in favor of waiting for a DYRL version.

My job had me discussing COVID and supply chain difficulties with someone the other day and he clued me on to an issue he's been running into:

Apparently, his factory has loads of goods built but they can't get the items shipped because there aren't any boats to put the items on. From the sounds of it, this crunch is really slamming all the smaller toy manufacturers with toys that were supposed to be released in January sliding to maybe March. I can't say it's impacting Arcadia but it seems likely. If not them, expect to hear some news of delays for other toys you may have preordered.

Interesting article, thanks for the link! In the end, only two items from an initially huge December AmiAmi order ended up shipping on time for me. We'll see how many of the ones that got pushed to January will still ship that month. It's pretty crazy; delays seem to be hitting pretty much every manufacturer.

Who thought it was a great idea to release the missiles separately and doesn't work for Bandai? :p

If you find the person who said "I love the missile packs being released separately and only once, after only one VF-1 release and with no indicators of the upcoming release schedule, that idea was great!" let us know.

    Paying more for the Valk?

These days Arcadia costs more than Bandai. The days of cheap Yamato valks are long gone, across the whole toy/figure industry. Even the Knockoffs are over $100.

Yeah, at retail the DX is honestly a really good price for what you get. I'd rather have the missiles separate and have the price of the Valk lower; I don't need full missile sets for every Valk I have. One missile set has covered three Chogokins for me, between different modes and missile styles. The idea that we'd get the missiles included with the Valk for little or no added cost is wishful thinking.

My main complaint with the missile set is just availability - it's fine (for me, anyways) to have it as a separate add-on, but I hate having to guess how many I'll need when I don't have any clue what Bandai's release schedule is. Do I need a set to cover Max & Miriya's DYRL set? Do I need more TV missiles? Who knows.

  14. I've been on the fence about buying a Beagle for a while and that's probably the best price I'm gonna see (certainly better than the $1k I saw at Frank & Sons before the pandemic started). Thanks for the heads' up vladykins!

Has anyone else had this problem?  It’s my 1J that hasn’t been transformed more than 3 times. I haven’t forced anything, these pieces just popped apart.

My VF-1S arrived like this from Nippon-Yasan. Not wanting to deal with the hassle of a return (NY had already shipped it late, got my address wrong, and then delayed for a month sending it back), I just glued it back together myself and haven't had an issue since. Transformed it multiple times since doing the repair, too.

Thanks for the awesome reply guys. Appreciate it, just need to be more vigilant in visiting this site so I can get latest pre O news or what not...BTW any thoughts on the Kakizaki version? I know he not super famous but he's the most reasonable one in term of $$$ in the bunch.....saw $288ish shipped

Honestly, I like the DYRL 1A head sculpt a lot and the green more than Hikaru's red. Kakizaki's not the most famous, but the Valk is cool. If I were to pick one up and budget was an issue, Kakizaki would be my vote. My arms didn't tab in super well in fighter mode out of the box, I don't know if that's mold degradation or if transforming it back to fighter from GERWALK will help them tab in a little better, but other than that it's the same as my 1J and my 1S.

They're going to keep releasing these, so the other option would be to wait for the next pre-order, but it'll be a while. TV Roy is the next release and he'll definitely be more expensive than Kakizaki. Something to be aware of, the releases all come with stands, but they don't come with missiles or super parts. Both will be extra sets if you want to display with them.

Tell me about it. The arms on my Kakizaku 1A simply won't stay pegged in when in fighter mode. Damn thing is held up against gravity with nothing but friction and hope. Way to take a step back from something Yamato perfected over a decade ago.

It's definitely worse on my Kakizaki than it was on my Hikaru VF-1J or 1S. The 1J had the arms held in pretty tightly despite the lack of a notch on those pegs. I'm hoping transforming the Kakizaki back to fighter mode will tighten it up, but I haven't tried it yet - he might just stay in GERWALK since I have one for each mode now.

My suspicion, personally, is that they're probably saving adding a notch for a mid-run "refreshening" of the line if sales start to slip. Maybe on an otherwise less popular model?

Perhaps I'll see if I can find it online somewhere.

The first trade is free on Kindle, IIRC. The other trades aren't expensive. They're also part of the collected IDW volumes, but I haven't been super huge on a lot of the IDW plotlines outside of Wreckers/MTMTE, so mileage may vary.

Speaking of MTMTE, how about this piece of work that got teased today:

  19. Mine showed up from Big in Japan this morning via DHL. You know that feeling when you're sick with a bad cold and you swear you'll never take feeling normal for granted again? That's me after dealing with N-Y for my last two DX releases. It actually showed up a couple days early even.
