Common question, but will ask again since availability/production of what's out there changes so frequently:

Suggestions for a cheap spray-can flat-coat?  My best model ever was my MG Wing, but as I obsessively made it DEAD flat in every nook and cranny, that meant I did a full 3D-spraying of each piece of armor separately.  And heavily. That was like, 3 cans of Tamiya TS-80.   I don't want to spend/waste that much ever again, and I think Epyon would require even more spraying due to so many angles/separate pieces.    (mist coats of TS-80 behave very differently than heavy coats, I found--heavy ones actually have a much more even, and flatter, final dried finish)

So, I'm looking for a "cheaper" way to get a dead-flat finish on MG Epyon (and my next Zaku).   And I am leaning a bit towards spraying sub-assemblies, rather than every piece separately this time.

I recommend using Testors dullcote or Model Master flat coat. Both can be found at local hobby shops and should be cheaper than Tamiya. You might end up using 3 cans depending on the number of coats but both have given me smooth finishes. And I usually topcoat in sub-assemblies and haven't had any problems. It is alot faster than doing individual pieces.

    Hope that helps.

Nice work as always, anubis. Out of everything, it's always your work on the tiny tiny figures that impresses the most.

Took another look at the Mercurius/Vayeate page, and it looks like there's some sort of preorder campaign going on; can anyone confirm? Seems to me Bandai are reissuing a whole raft of Leo/Maganac kits. If you order the Sandrock AND MnV AND one of the others, they'll throw in a "triple stand" action base. Dunno if this is limited only to P-Bandai Japan or if @BluefinBrands/PB USA will be getting in on this, too.

    Kits being reissued:

    - Leo Space Type https://p-bandai.jp/item/item-1000149524/
    - Leo Full Weapon Set https://p-bandai.jp/item/item-1000149527/
    - Maganac Rashid/Abdul https://p-bandai.jp/item/item-1000149525/
    - Maganac Auda/Ahmad https://p-bandai.jp/item/item-1000149526/

BBTS has pre-orders up for the HG Leo and Maganac re-releases. They are kinda expensive for an HG kit but an easy pre-order if you are looking for one.

Have you tried using the Vallejo Airbrush Flow Improver (VAFI from here on)? Also what psi are you spraying it at? If it's not laying on smooth, it's because it's drying too quickly and isn't getting enough time to level. Instead of thinner, try the VAFI to slow the rate of drying so that it has more time to level. I also had the same issue until I started using VAFI mixed with the varnish.

Thanks for the help. Usually I spray around 15 - 17 psi depending on the paint. I do have the VAFI but didn't seem to help much so maybe the pressure was too high. What ratio (roughly) do you use clear coat to VAFI? Mostly I use a few drops until the paint looks thin enough.

They changed it again? I can't even remember what they called it before that. Each name change becomes less and less memorable.

I still have a bottle of it for it was still labeled as Future, but it's unlikely it will ever be emptied as I've switched to using the Vallejo Mecha line of varnishes for my gloss coating needs as it's tougher and more scratch resistant made specifically for applications that the name implies. Though I guess I would use Future for models with non-moving parts since it's cheaper to use by far.

I have been using Vallejo's Mecha gloss and matte varnishes also. The matte varnish is really good and haven't had any problems but I can't seem to get the gloss varnish to go on smooth. I have used various thinners and adjusted the pressure for the airbrush but can't get it have a smooth surface. Usually it dries with a slight "texture" to the clear coat. Not sure if is an acrylic clear coat problem or I am missing something. Appreciate any advice you have!
