Sorry for not updating it... I did finish it; however, the WIP photos i took while doing the model were deleted from my old phone... and then I never updated it... Sorry for all those interested!

It was a very nice build... here are pics I took earlier this year.... perhaps when I have free time I will take better shots of it on its own

The whole point is to give you a much greater tonal variance to your colors than just white/grey/black pre-shading allows.

Here's another example:

I'm interested in using this technique, but am baffled about the correct way to go about doing it... I tried it a couple times, but each time the top color just completely covers the "pre-shading" variance... does it work better with lacquers, or acrylic? or do I just have to thin the heck out of the top base coat color? Any help/step-by-step would be much appreciated!

Quick update on the decal project. I spent a few hours on it yesterday, scanning in the stickers, drafting the "B" sheet, and doing a test print. The color saturation on the black, yellow, and red markings isn't quite there yet. One or two more iterations should do the trick. The black was an easy fix (bad color setting in Illustrator), so now it's the same deep opaque black as the decal numbers (e.g., B1) and the original sticker sheet.  I'd be interested in this "B" sheet... I've been wondering if I should just frisket film trace and mask the skull, apollo, and un spacy logo... but decals would be so much easier... once you set up a price I'd like to know

I received my vf-1 today. Very excited! Opened it up, and looked at the runners, and quickly put it in storage before my wife could see it, hahahahaha. Just kidding, I don't have a wife... I had to hide it from my girlfriend... just kidding, she walked in the house as I was trying to hide it....

I dunno why, but it seems more glorious than when I saw it at Yellow Submarine in Akihabara, my GF agreed as well... perhaps cos it is mine, and not just something to gawk at. Hopefully I can work on it during my Xmas break (a perk of being a teacher I suppose)

Hey tekering, glad you are warming up to the kit. With your initial assessment of the vf-1 it got me to second guess my purchase, but the more I looked at the initial photos you posted it actually made me more excited for it... esp seeing the runner for the figure... can't wait to see how you paint yours!

I may paint it white, and then give it the ol' Kakizaki green markings (only cos green is my favorite color). Now to wait patiently for CDJ to ship the thing...

Question: how much paint do you think will be needed on this? What are your guys/gals preferred paint brands?

I usually build/paint 1/100 macross kits, 1/35 military kits, or anime/custom figures. I used to solely use Vallejo paints, but a local shop stocks Gaia Notes, and Mr Color, so I've been using those, and will likely use that on this kit

So, I'm back in the US without a second vf-1 (didn't have the money or space in my suitcase for this monster, or maybe I'm not hardcore enough)... will have to wait for CDJ to ship/upcharge shipping

Anywho, I got to see the model in box (and in box with a box) at Yellow Submarine in Akihabara's Radio Kaiken... It's big.... it's heavy... I was giddy... it made me really wish I had brought another suitcase.

I got all my model supplies ready

I have yet to see the VF-1 at any shops here in Tokyo (amiami, yellow submarine, volks, yodabashi, etc) ... perhaps today will be the day!

Also, it's a bit funny to see that unboxing thread on twitter... a slight chortle was expressed

I log in more often than usual just to look at this image. I can't wait to order one... or possibly two, so I can have it in fighter and gerwalk mode (with each mode displaying the different characters). Nah, I can't do that... got to remind myself: "one for my shelf, and one for someone else...." That's my Gnerl! I've been meaning to post pics of it, but haven't had the time to take good pics of it cos of work, and other macross related models I'm working on... someday i'll get around to taking proper pics..... also, as an aside, I ended up finding decals and placing it over my hand painted zentraedi symbols

"Don't order the Missle Regults from Nin-nin-game... I placed my preorder (& paid) a while back, and once it was released they never updated me on shipment. I contacted them several times because my order no longer showed up on my "order" page, and after waiting two weeks to hear a response they told me that there had been a mistake on the pricing and that I would have to pay an extra $54USD. 

The most annoying part of this is the customer service. I messaged them through their online service, and Facebook, but it took them forever to respond. I told them in my second to last message to refund my money cos I didn't want to pay an extra $54 (in my head I started to think that they would  just keep giving me the runaround and ask for more and more money). A few days have passed and I still haven't received a refund.

In the end... I ended up buying the set on eBay (cheaper than nin-nin-game's price after adding the $54).  [End rant]
