Cautiously optimistic. Since it is Sunrise, hopefully there will be a refocus back to the Mecha. Mecha has played a distant 3rd fiddle to the idols and love triangles long enough.

Shoji Kawamori for the VFs and Kazutaka Miyatake for non VFs. Yoko Kanno for music. Kawamori should take a break from directing.

Main concern is the possible “Gundamification” of the VFs though.

VFs with fin funnels, anyone? :D

TBH. it's really odd to see Sunrise do a Macross show.

The US military has been actively monitoring and investigating reports of unidentified flying objects in US airspace since the 1940s.

The most famous study was the one undertaken from 1952-1969 called Project Blue Book, but there were others that preceded it like Project Sign (1947) and Project Grudge (1949).  The most recent was the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program that ran from 2007 to 2012.

Long story short, UFO sightings are invariably people misidentifying natural phenomena or aircraft due to distance, lighting, prevailing atmospheric conditions, and/or the function of their camera equipment.  A fair few UFO sightings get reported when people accidentally spot aircraft that aren't public yet or aren't properly lit, like the slew of reports triggered by a collection of nuclear test detection balloons or the test flights of the Have Blue and Senior Trend prototypes of the F-117.  The U-2 spyplane was another craft frequently misidentified as a UFO due to its extreme operating altitudes.  The military naturally keeps an eye on these kind of reports to see if anything has leaked about secret programs or take action if they find something that might be an undetected foreign aircraft.

Where the conspiracy nuts come in is the theories about UFOs really being alien spacecraft come to do weird stuff like mutilate cattle or abduct people for anal probing... because a metal probe where the sun doesn't shine is a great way to meet and greet new species, right?  (The idea that there was a vast coverup of the existence of alien visitations has never looked sillier, given how bad our government is at keeping secrets nowadays.)

Fair enough.  I guess what I was trying to get at was the military was actually briefing politicians about this activity and it gets reported like any other news item.  IIRC, in the past did'nt the military not just outright deny the existence of this events?

Like how some country may be hiding an alien spaceship that crashed landed on a island in the east pacific?

If that happened then by this time the Unification Wars should have been over and we would be united under one banner, right?

In the opening shot I though it was Isamu flying towards the screen! I love how Macross Plus borrowed of of Top Gun, and how Top Gun 2 is giving a serious head nod to Macross Plus in return!

An awesome nod would be if the F-18 did the inverted flying while hugging ground that Isamu did in Macross Plus. :D

I was quite surprise by the announcement of this movie, but a part of me has this nagging feeling it might flop. :(

I'm surprised no one has posted it here yet.

IIRC, UFO sightings used to be just conspiracy theories but now the U.S. military actually monitors it?

This news makes me wonder if the military has a transformable F-14 somewhere or a repaired alien battle cruiser just in case. lol

The "Die Hard in a boat incident" was not animated. On the one hand I think KyoAni can animate well, after the work on FMP years ago the president of KyoAni claimed TSR tired them out and would probably not animate mechs again (which has been true for the past 13 years). After watching Violet Evergarden I think KyoAni would have added a lot of unnecessary changes to FMP instead of straight up adapting the source material like Xebec is doing. Additionally, KyoAni's night scenes in Violet Evergarden were so poorly lit you could not see what was happening. Why draw all of these amazing frames of animation when you can't see most of what is happening? Xebec did a good job on lighting all of the night scenes during the Burning One Man Force arc in IV. On the other hand, I'm not quite use to the redesigns Xebec used for the characters in FMP IV. They're like a hybrid of their former anime and manga incarnations, leaning closer to their manga designs. What I do appreciate most about this Xebec adaptation is their attention to mechanical detail on close-ups on any of the arm-slaves, guns, cars, engines etc.

Spot on about the mechanical details. I dig them too.

By the way just saw episode 8 and I thought there was some significance to the number eight in EPISODE 8. :D

    Hailee Steinfeld... Giggity!

    80's... Cool.

Starscream actually kinda looks like Starscream & is a F-4... Cool

Bayformers style transformation... I'll deal with it.

What looks like the Army hunting down Bumblebee.... sort of a rehash of the Bay movies.

Bumblebee still can't talk.... not cool.

Overall it does look good from this first trailer, I saw the first three movies in theaters maybe this one is worth the ticket price. B))

You forgot. John Cena as a bad guy. :p

Besides FMP and gundam, are there any nice mecha anime you guys would recommend in the past 1-2 years or currently running?

A bit older. But you could give Cross Ange a try. Word of warning it's a bit jarring at the start.

Also. Gundam Thunderbolt. Not exactly a series more of an ONA/OVA/OAV. But it has mobile suits. :D

I'm catching up on FMP IV, and... three major complaints:

    1) Xebec is no KyoAni. The animation is technically impressive but incohesive. And hoo boy did they cut corners on that car chase.

    2) A bit of a nitpick, but one that everyone gets wrong: The shot cannon used by Mao isn't a shotgun, it's a pump-action rifle that fires the same rounds as the automatic rifles the M9s use. The reason Sousuke uses it primarily is because of his experience as a guerrilla fighter in Afghanistan/Helmajistan, where its and/or similar weapons' simpler mechanics and ability to quickly load different types of ammunition compared to an automatic made it a versatile tool for him. Most games and even animation gets it wrong, though, and treats it as just a shotgun because it looks like a shotgun.

    3) The characterization is really... odd, all around. Chidori gets it the worst of them all; she's bothered by things that didn't bother her before (or that she at least came to terms with before), she's more timid and flaky than she was before... It's as if the events of TSR never happened. Everyone feels a bit more like stock anime characters than before. Speaking of which, this season's writing is much more generically anime than Fumoffu or TSR, which is further disappointing. (Kaname and Sousuke's awkwardly contrived conversation at the end of episode 3, for instance. It's even capped off by the usual hammy mamoru declaration.)

    EDIT:

oh also they need mikuni shimokawa back

    EDIT 2:

Are they actually calling the ASes "mechs"? Could just be the subtitles...

There's also one thing bothering me from FMP IV. The Alastor. Why the shock on Souske's face upon seeing two of them in the apartment with you know who? Didn't he or his team not encounter it in a "Die Hard in a boat" incident that was in the book?  Or was that part not animated at all?

The animation by the way is odd for some reason. Made me wish KyoAni was doing this. Heck it would even be better if the group that did FMP I did the animation.

BUT, I'm still happy to see more FMP animated. :D

Well ladies and gentlemen. Delta is finally done.

Any thoughts or ideas on what will keep those Walkure sales going without the show?

Maybe an OVA taken a few months later on Walkure doing a galactic tour or the members possibly retiring from Walkure and going solo?

Maybe it's time we followed the Star Wars formula of Rogue One?  You know something that happens between the established shows.

Maybe the development program of the current VF ala Macross Plus with the Draken being the competing VF and later stolen. :p

Or maybe a movie about the resurgence of the Anti-U.N. faction and them being behind the the war.

Well if they go with an F-18 or F-22 Raptor I'll be happy. Question here is what air force are they going to set up as the "enemy" when the time comes. Not to pat the USA too much on the back but other then Israel and the Russians who really can fly against us? China? Hmm...doubt anything they have is superior...numbers maybe...holy crap a TIE like swarm, now thats something I'd pay to see.

It wont be China.  That's antagonizing a huge market for this movie.  Remember the Red Dawn remake? :p It'll probably be North Korea again or maybe the Ruskies?

Or they could do a period piece like maybe the first Gulf War or mid-90s. IIRC, a new movie about the the 1980 Iranian embassy siege is going to be shown soon so going with a 90's setting might certainly be possible. :)

So no one here apparently cares much for this movie. :p

I just got back from seeing it today with the kids. I hadn't planned on watching it at all; they wanted to see it.

I haven't seen the last one, and I forget most of what happens in 2 and 3, so basically it's like a return to yo-ho-ho after 10 years. And it wasn't TOO bad, but that still means it was bad. The number of story threads and competing factions gets unnecessarily convoluted, but the music is as enjoyable as ever. Most damning is that it felt four hours long but is only a little over two. The kids and I agreed

      Reveal hidden contents

we would have liked for the Flying Dutchman and Will Turner to make an appearance during the climax of the adventure. An immortal submersible fighting an undead ship that literally eats other ships would have been faaaantastic.

Saw it myself just yesterday. I felt like more of the same.  I'm curious though where they will go from this point for future sequels especially after the plot twists on this movie.

  12. I'd love to see Mylene again, but Lady M is obviously Doctor Chiba.

I really like that they aren't just leaving Mirage's family as a namedrop. It would've been so easy to make her a Jenius for the name recognition and then just leave it at that, but they decided to go into how the name affects Mirage, the burden of her family's reputation.

Her grandparents are literally living legends, her aunt can rock the skies without even having proper flight controls, and Mirage is... decent, but not exceptional. She knows she isn't living up to her heritage, she knows everyone around her knows, and it is eating away at her inside.

    ...

Actually, I wonder if that's why she's out in the boonies with Delta squadron now instead of still with the spacey . Did she leave to escape her legacy?

Because let's be honest here. The ragnans didn't fight Space War 1. Max and Millia may as well just be characters in a story. When she goes out on Ragna, Mirage is just Mirage. In the spacey, she was never going to be more than "the Jenius' disappointment of a granddaughter", whether it was fair or not. Out there, far from Earth, she can be herself, succeed or fail on her own merit. She won't be held up to an impossibly high standard.

I'm going to re-watch this episode but any idea who the male voice is? The one in Mirage's monologue about her not meeting the standards of the Jenius name.

  13. Gundam Thunderbolt is now on TV in Kanto District.

That pilot who is in the GM is played by Yuichi Nakamura?

He ”has got on” the 2 Gundams and 1 Valk. :)

    So breaking tradition.....

We don't get a Gundam jack, instead we gat a DOM jack! Plus a shot to the face.

Io reminded me of Mr. Bushido from that other Gundam franchise, TBH. Wait a second that's Alto's VA also?

I see a gundam still put the fear of god on Zeon pilots. I guess Amuro in the RX-78 was turly terrifying for Zeon pilots?

By the way, a female (acting) ship captain on a UC show. This time for the Federation. Cima was for the Zeons in the other series, right? :)

Watched the first episode of Thunderbolt on YouTube. Cool concept, great animation.

But... I really don't like jazz. I think that might be a sticking point, here.

The jazz did not seem out of place to me, IMHO. It made the battles more thrilling for me. B)) To each his own I guess. ^_^

  14. Unlike some of you folks here, my upgrade might sound more like a sidegrade. :)

    i5-3470

    Gigabyte B75-based Mobo

    8GB of RAM

    Radeon 7770 to Radeon 7950

    2x1TB drives

Samsung 223GW LCD to LG 23EA63 LED IPS

    Antec 300 Case

    SilverStone 600W Modular PSU

Af the two upgrades, it's the LCD to LED move that has me awed. The difference between the two is like night and day!

By the way, I don't play a lot of demanding games...probably my most demanding will be Far Cry 4 and XCOM 2......so I just wanted to throw this out to our techy folks here:

    1) Do I need a 16GB upgrade for RAM?

    2) I'm skipping Haswell and Sky Lake. I'd like to wait for the day that DDR4 RAM becomes cheap and mainstream. Sounds like a good idea?

    3) Any reason to go for an i7 if I can find them real cheap?
