  1. It's been in development for a good long while now and it's merely a proven technology taken from the attack helo. About as 'new' as a GameBoy is.
  2. The only place I use to ever hear that argument was on 4Chan! Where hate = love. But the people who generally say what you've said was that are the people who are rampant fanboy's who are so wrapped up in their 'love' for GitS they'll shout down anyone and everyone who remotely disagrees with them. Survival of the loudest if you will, I guess. I do think that people have long ago accepted the style change in 2D CG, but find the pure 3D CG work too jarring from the norm when it's not heavily smoothed out like in the Gits2 movie, and that's part of the issue. It just wasn't polished enough. AppleSEED suffered from inconsistent work and a switch to an immature medium that doesn't have enough talented (not just skill taught) people in it yet to make it look 'great' straight from the beginning. But even when people say that "It looks bad!" it maybe a single scene, area, or object OR even half the show to the entire show. However it nowadays can not be so casually dismissed as "subjective" because of the shear amount of CG that is thrown at us on an hourly basis builds up so much exposure to it at ALL levels of quality that if it's not equal to the mediums leading style it truly is substandard and thus "Looks bad." through long experience & exposure to the standard. ----- @Batou, GitS did start directly after AppleSEED ended. AppleSEED ended one month and GitS took it's place the next month. Appleseed had some SWAT action in it but the leads were moved quickly into Special Forces (you don't go out of country on military counter-terrorist or riot actions otherwise). I throughly believe that SEED focused Shirow's ideas for GitS with SEED's nearly continuous talk of defining human(ity) and all of the geo-political talk.
  3. Well sometimes give has to take place from the designers POV because it turns out to be an ugly model in 3D when it's a true transfer from 2d to 3D. But most of the time if it's a good design it won't change. Interesting hearing about 2 fleets. Maybe both fleets were sent in the same direction because of a possibly high concentration of habital planets OR something happened that they need to merge the fleets together. But multiple fleets aren't new because of M7 having 4-5 different fleets. But this does help to explain why the intro had so many colony ships!
  4. The largest hindrance to 3D anime is the amount of time it takes to polish both the 3D and 2D so they are seamless. It's completely doable on a series budget in the US, but it takes an OVA or Movie budget for the Japanese. It's want I've said for years now they just don't have the work flow experience nor the technical experience to make 3D mesh well with 2D. So as long as the 3D is terribly easy to spot then it will forever be considered by the masses as "bad". sketchley, all well pointed out. But as you read through AppleSEED you see that the writting and art both get better and it seems to 'come together' for Shirow. I think by the middle of the AppleSEED series he had a firmly laid out idea of what he wanted to write about during the near future in his career. GITS's basically shows that Shirow is now a mature mangka of his own.
  5. Fabulous expounding on the subject material!!! ------ I did clarify 'test-run', because such a HUGH amount of similar material and concepts were shared between the two. GITS was released after Appleseed anyways, and during it's run you could clearly see that Shirow was firming up his concepts that would lead to GITS. Also doesn't help that when AppleSEED ended Shirow immediately started on GITS the next month. - Super Cops - Healthy female lead character with a male second. - High amounts of cyborg enhancement - Specially trained 'police' divisions designed to specifically handle terrorists - Political movements between nations that got talked about quite heavily - Mecha out the arse - And seriously heavy amounts of debate on the topic of Humanism and what defines the term "Humanity" - A 'PuppetMaster' behind each scheme.
  6. If I remember correctly Appleseed was basically the test run for the GITS story and other than watching/reading them for the mecha you are bound to be bored, disappointed, or just rolling your eyes at some of the material in them. Both were pretty much Shirow's version of Hill Street Blue and Cagney & Lacey anyways. So if you don't like cop drama's then avoid them like the plague! "Read/watch" Shirow's material for the designs and not the babble of 'Super-Cops/PowerRangers' and the world is a much better place. Or just google images of "Appleseed" & "GITS" and save yourself the trouble, because I'm sure that there are torrents out there for the art books and such.
  7. I think that at the time of the trailer the design work hadn't been finished on the flagship. I do agree that it's gonna be potentially fugly since Miyatake hasn't been stated as having a hand in the show. But with the amount of Studio Nue influence in Japans mechanical design world we should see something familiar. Though with the Bishie main male character....
  8. Kinda like Macross's version of RT's Invid or Bioroids?? I don't mind either, but the organic angle is a bit 'meh!' anymore. I wonder what the capital ships are going to look like...
  9. Yeah it does!! The center and upper chest shoulder area is very thin(willowy) and it looks weak because of it. ----- Ok! After watching the trailer I gotta say the the 3D and techno (Star Ocean anyone!?) elements are pretty glaring to the point of annoying and simply over come the simple character designs and animation in general. Now because it's a series and not an OVA I do not expect a Macross Zero level of quality however the 3D is far below the level set by the Strain anime and the Karas OVA. So at best we can hope that they've been polishing the 8th-10th episode right now because if not I'm seeing Vandread level 3D for most of the series. Akin to the junk we've seen with this years Satellite anime. The music is quite good and does a great job of keeping the old school pop theme in mind and has a nice modern style. ----- Good stuff Graham!!
  10. Right now, and having only seen the static images, I gotta say I'm not liking where the 3D is going in this. The colony ships, not calling them Megaroads as they don't even look like them, are good... VERY good! So good that they look like matte paintings in the style of M7's intro! And I'm definitely not happy with what appears to be a super robot/magical girl transform that the V-25? has. Hopefully both will be sorted out... *waits for the video to finish downloading.....*
  11. Who knows how the Anti-UN group survived. It could've easily morphed into a hate group that is 'Pro Human' instead of what it was. It would certainly fit in with today's political clime. It worked in M7 with the Meltran's, so it could easily work with normal humans.
  12. OH CRAP!!! Kazutaka Miyatake isn't listed in the article as a design contributor!! That'll be something of a first. This whole pilot school junk (school based anime stinks for the most part), imo, feels like shades of Macross: Trash, M+, M7, AND CLAMP's recent anime all mashed together. I seriously hope that they plan on bringing the Anti-UN group back into the fold as the opponent.
  13. *groans* "Macross School Days...." *wheres the puke icon when you need it...* Well since the one characters name is Nome is hope that the 'evil space aliens' pull a Muv Luv Alt on her and make her NOM NOM'd... Looks like a 'brooding, semi-emo' male lead and a genki girl... how typical. And WTF! is up with the even more elf'ed ears!?!? The zen/hybrids going to be space elves now? ANOTHER colony fleet!!! BLARGH! Hope they crash the ships soon, because the dessie's didn't get alot of love in M7 and only a little in M0.
  14. Sadly true. My only large criticism of the series is that the characters really don't grow much, or even interaction much at an emotional level like friends did in SDF (ok Gamblin grew but he was an outer circle main character) at all over the first 14-20 episodes. Throw in a very slowly developing plot and that the viewer is left with a "monster-of-the-week" feel to the show.
  15. That's probably one of the most direct and most polite ways I've every seen that put! 10/10! Starscreams flip transform was a great 'tip of the hat' to Macross & RT though! But that was pretty much it...
  16. Roughly 3-4 series, bought, per year not counting the 3-4 I usually DL. It's starting to lessen because of the amount of garbage coming out. Now excuse me I have to go watch something called 'Rental Magic'.
  17. Hiro, just like every other character, is only a vehicle to add filler for the main Peter vs Sylar storyline (aka Hero vs Villain). I totally believe that they will continue this trend through out the rest of Heroes run. But what really makes Hiro a terrible character is that he doesn't learn and continues to be altruistic and act childishly . He lost most of the maturity that he had earned throughout S1. Nothings worth than a character that clearly grows and than is suddenly very poorly written. HRG is about the only character mildly interesting and even then he's only a poor cliche of the bad guy turned good guy, and it's starting to get ruined because of the terribly, terribly cliche Claire arc.
  18. Ya know it's sad when you nearly automatically dismiss errors like this when it comes to posts on the Internet. Too much apathy I guess. Good catch!! March, that 'humor' section is like a mini-4Chan >-<! I'll have too look through my "4Chan Humor" file for others. But on a more serious subject. With your finding higher resolution images of the Megaroad 01 she should be able to be put into either 3D or a physical model now!! Megaroad in 3D..... hmmmm....
  19. "And the nashing of teeth stopped in abrupt shouts of praise and rejoicing!!" GREAT news indeed!
  20. More detail! *wonders what it would've looked like at pedestrian level with some panning viewpoint*
  21. Not a VF-4. 1. Canopy size. The 4 has a canopy nearly 3 times the size of the 14's. 2. Distance between engine nacelles. The 4 has a small engine distance. The 14 has a much wider distance. (This is based off of the canopy size.) 3. Lack of large canards. The concept work is clearly defined in this area so the 'odd VP' doesn't wash because the VP is nearly head on. 4. Lack of canard shadows. And since the canards don't fold up, but down the lack of these shadows tells that there are no canards. 5. The thickness & short-ish shadow of the planes nose and neck. These would be much thinner and longer that what it appears to be. Right now it hints at the 14's shape. Furthermore there looks to be a wideness to the cockpit area. 6. The lack of squared off shadows from the engine nacelles, which would indicate a 4. But sadly are bullet pointed like the 14's 7. The long, deep, and sharply angled wing shadow that heavily implies the 14 and not a long shallow shadow that would be cat for a 4's. 8. The tail fins are curved like the 14's and not straight like the 4's.
  22. Well then. Since this image is 2 years after the M7 fleet left earth (2038) and the M7 series official starts in 2045 that would give you an additional 3 years of prototype testing. Plenty of time for variants to pop up and designs to become finalized. I could easily label the plane the VA/F-14, but since 4+ different designs came out of the root design (VF-4 > Fz-109A-F > VF-14) I can only call this one an undesignated prototype due to lack of evidence. If it had the engine cannons visible then I'd label it a VF-14. For it to be a VA-14 it would need the panel that's near the peak of the engines front nacelle to be present.
