Or maybe just save the dubs for a later release.
Kinda like how they are now?

But seriously though. Unless you are already a fan of anime, a lack of dubs would definitely continue the revenue drops because you would see fewer people buying buying localized anime versions and even then DL's would be hard pressed to WANT to change because it's "Free!".
Besides a company already brought that up at a CON and it WILDLY backfired on the company's President. Who was very embarrassed by it.

When did people steal when recording off their TV? If he's hosting it, he's still sharing it just the same... just using a different media. You can say "that's illegal!" all you want, but it's a silly law that's hardly enforced.
Your argument is ONLY valid if your recordings don't step out the door or transferred to the computer and then hosted on the Internet, and then it fails because it's become the typical 'entitlement' one. You may feel that it's a silly law, but it doesn't mean that it's to be ignored. It's like complaining about getting a ticket for jay-walking in front of a cop driving down the street!

-----
@Mr March, That's a neat article, but it doesn't really get into the specifics of the debate that would valid some things. The increase of fan-subbers during those years(sure it's a floating number and somewhat difficult to find), new season licensed and older animes licensed, prices charged, and fans ratings per anime genre.
But at least they didn't have the mega drop that manga did! I do wish that they would stop doom saying the situation though. Yes it's hard out there, but it doesn't mean the end!

***Saving reply for another thread***

They've been working on the show for several months already. Each episode of BSG has an 8 week production time from shooting to finished episode and the CGI is fairly extensive in that 1 hour show. So I don't expect the animation will be as recycled as Mac 7, considering how long they've already been working on it and that it's episodes are only 1/2 hr long.
Well one thing the date gives is an opportunity to "re-fit" the VF-19 and VF-22 with new tech similar to the VF-171, if they are shown at all.
They've been working on M:F for over 6 months. M0 had single episodes that needed that much time to 'close' to the anime look, and on an OVA budget at that! Your BSG comparision fails because the CGI studios where BSG is done are very mature studios. Japanese & Asian studios are not even near the same level of maturity and are still only marginally advanced from the late 90's. It would still take the J-studios at least 3-4 months to get even near the same level as M0, but the BSG studio could do the same in under 6 weeks at a much higher quality level. So IF they do keep the Spring release date it would be best to wait for the DVD releases, so you don't have to suffer with Aquarion level 4Chan QUALITY!!! Basically don't expect better quality than what has been seen in the trailers.
Sure they could squeeze in "OLD crowd favorites", but that's about it. The whole 'logical progress' idea has long been thrown out the window because they are still using design ideas that are over 70 years old.

If he gives me an extra fruit he got for me while they were giving it out for free every week, no crime has been comitted. Duhhhh Television broadcasts are for all intents and purposes free, if someone makes a recording and shares it I see no wrong in that.
That only works if he didn't steal it to begin with! But he did so it's the crime of receiving stolen goods. DURH!!!!

Your VP only remotely holds up when you are only handing out your recordings a few times to family and friends (locally in a small city or town), and then aren't being copy'ed again. But your VP completely fails when it comes to dl's from the Internet, because then you are copying copy's! Also you are copying copy's of material that is not broadcast in your area. And even if it IS in your area you are still copying a copy unless it's from an official release site which would make it legal. Otherwise you are receiving stolen goods.

Sheryl's look'n very Britney isn't she!
A trashy singer who woulda thought!
But it plays well since you've got "the little traditional girl" in RR (that dog eared hair still freaks me out).I really don't like the Spring '08 release date because there is gonna be no way that they can clean up the 3D so it matchs the 2D in that short of a time span. Which leads me to believe that there will be A LOT less action(recycled transforms here we come!) and more storyline.
I also don't like the new setting date of 2059. It's just too close to M7.

A. It's not a loophole.
B. They didn't, except in the untested case of "owning a PC is illegal because it can be used to break copy protection."
I've actually read the DMCA. Every self-contradictory paragraph of it.
So have I. They state that any machine produced without built-in Copyright protection can be considered illegal. Which is one of the main reasons why so many protection schemes are being hatched.

QFT. There's just too many damn loopholes in Season 2.

END OF THREAD!

This is the terminal problem with Supa Powers of any type! Unless you have an awesome creative writing crew that completely refuses to write bad material this will ALWAYS happen.
Anyways with this completely horrible season ender I seriously hope that the show does die. So far this season has completely undone half of last seasons story's and character development, while virtually 'resetting' the show at the same time!
The Bad:
HGR is back to his normal tricks. ((WTF!)) Claire is still an immature whiny little batty. Mohinder has still yet to grow up and stop playing at being a crusader. Hiro has been completely FUBAR'ed as a viable character. Peter is a god. Sylar is an insane demi-god. Not milking the Parkman's Father/Company arc for all it's worth! Every 'Leader' of The Company suddenly getting a sense of morals.((oh freaking plz!))
The Good:
Nathan grew up and stopped being a mommy's boy. Killing of Nikki.
The "WTF!" & The "THANK GOD!":
Killing off DL, seriously the only other remotely great character besides Nathan and stupidiest move in the show. The continuous "Oh we forgot that he/she could do this or had this...." story loopholes. Peter's "Irish" story arc.

I hope I'm not the only one here who gets the "I'm a Furry!" impression of the Ranka Rii character. The hair is really pushing me in that direction...

I could understand if it was a DVD that was fansubbed, but if this was something that was broadcast live on Japanese TV...those who are going to uphold the "crossed your doorstep" and left your "control" 'law' can suck it. I don't see how they could be losing any profit from me watching something that isn't in the States or isn't even on DVD yet.
The torrents and dl's are full of rips and fansubbed rips, and sometimes groups intentionally re-sub with the dvd release.
The company's lose profit because you are not watching their commercials/sponsors which fund the anime's production (a well known concept that crosses national lines and has been around for over 50 years). Also all of the copyright issues aside you are also receiving stolen goods knowingly by downloading any non-official download. And stealing data is just as the same as stealing rip's or dvd's themselves. Your just using that as an argument, even though it's the typical entitlement "it was on the Internet, so it's free" line of BS.

Place yourself in their position where you see your product being copied freely in another country and you know that you only made it for the money to begin with and had huge amounts of sponsoring to bring it to market locally (lose potential of profits due to smaller audience size). Or how about only giving away that product in your country for a limited time before selling it, yet having that copied 'free' product show up in another country that you only sell the product in!!

Plus the fact that the article said it was photoshopped, I think that was the big tip-off...
Well that's nice.

-
That is a flat out SHOP job!

Lack of reflections, digital noise not from a camera, clear edge outlines, lack of color shift, etc...

According to Anime News Network, Hayato Aoki is the artist for the Macross Frontier manga.
Graham
That's what I looked under. Came up with very little. Thanks for the scan!!
.....
Hrmmmm... looks positively average as a manga art goes. Man I wish Obata, Endo, or even Nihei were on the book....

I think the worst I've seen was that inserting a game console disk into a PC is a violation of the law because the copyright holder never SAID you could stick it in something other than a game console.
They've dealt with that little loophole in the DMCA (nasty little piece of work that is).

No different than recording on a VHS tape. It's not stealing if people in Japan can watch it for free too.

That would ONLY apply if you got it over the airwaves, cable channel, satellite TV, and officially licensed distributors on the Internet. If it's not then it's definitely stealing regardless of how you frame your reasons.

-
I'm still planning to stop by Sogo (Japanese dept store) after I get off work tonight and see if they have the November Shonen Ace. Hopefully, it won't be wrapped in plastic, so I can check for any pics.
Graham
Ah just buy the durn thing!

Seriously though I attempted to look up the artist involved and could only find vague references on Google about some of the artists anime. Has anyone found any of that artists other works??? I really don't want to try 4Chan for this...

-
Not as awesome as if they fed Mr. Muggles waffles.

PITA would rip into them!

Then I guess I am a plain and simple pirate.
And I guess I don't care.
*looks at his cd's of dl'ed anime*
As am I and many others, but understanding that it IS piracy is halfway to understanding the problems with today's anime market.

@dejr8bud, good news for fans. Industry killing for anime at that price!

-
Thanks for posting that JsARCLIGHT! Saved my a good bit of typing.

@Chewie, you are still attempting to debate on the of justification of downloading. What I 'feel' or you 'feel' about it doesn't matter. The laws are quite clear, and NOTHING can stop a Japanese creator/copyright holder from suing your pants off with your nations law system.
Flat out, when your computer is connected to the Internet you are connected to a multi-layered distribution system and when you download or upload ANY material that is not yours by creation it's considered theft. Sure some things like uploading screenshots from games, movies, and shows are very questionable. But uploading/downloading shows, games, movies, and scanned in images from manga, magazines, or books that can all be bought (unless specifically stated) can be considered theft. Which is EXACTLY what got NAPSTER into trouble as well as GOOGLE via YouTube more recently. Go to the Library and look up the laws.
@Dante74, They are covered mate. Since the Bar has paid a fee to the local cable company (who in turn has paid a fee to the TV network, who in turn has paid for the ability to telecast the game to the franchise owners) and as long as they don't charge you directly for watching the game it's all good.
-
Ok after fully reading the article.
I agree with it's writer. But to be honest the Anime/Manga markets will crash and burn before any fundamental change can/will take place. Every localization company in the world should bring pressure against the company's responsible for the problem and force them to fix their internal FUBAR.
When They Cry would've been the hugh hit that the industry needed, but it'll never seen the US shores now.
-
I remember when games came out on 5 1/4" and 3.5 " floppys.
>BIG olde snip<
Then came the CD burner gaming industry.
HAHAHA!!!
Remember the days when it was on cassette tape?
And computers could be expanded with clunky hardware plug-ins?
But all that aside burnable CD's have ended the control schemes that the company's had in place. However now the new control schemes are even more over reaching with the computer to be required to have a 'Net connection in order to either run it's OS or allow play with a new game.
The most easy solution to their entire problem is to not make the playable media computer accessible! But their greed will never let them do so.
@Fort Max,
They can do it easily by televising translated and dubbed anime the same day and time slot in BOTH nations. America via website distribution. Then in America each viewer gets a digital ticket (kinda of a permanent cookie) and if that ticket turns up in distribution then they are screwed! In Japan since TV is localized then they just encode a number into the anime show for each station and then backtrack it to the uploader.
Now sure it would be easy to take both out, but you've already removed the interest because fan subs are immediately bypassed!

Where does the fine line between stealing and saving for later start to blur? If my buddy DVRs Family Guy and I watch it later because I missed it, am I stealing from FOX and Seth McFarlane because I didn't personally watch it on my tv at home? Same thing goes with Bleach. It airs in Japan. 2 days later I download it subbed and enjoy it. Am I stealing it or is torrenting it a different version of my buddy DVR'ing it?
It's a fine line between stealing and "watching later" depending on what it is you're downloading as far as I am concerned.
Illegal distribution laws have been in effect for decades and are fairly clean cut and are also quite often shown on the shows credits stating blatantly "NO distribution or re-distribution.". You also often get 2-3 of these warnings per bought movie or tv show and 1-2 times per showing on telecast.
The fact that you say that there actually IS a 'fine line' means that you're going out of your way to explain away any responsibility for your actions. It's exactly that type of attitude that the current 'Ethicless' fan-subbers/translators have.
"Business greed is baaaad! But personal greed is perfectly acceptable!!"
Duke, I'm pretty much the same way. But I don't download an entire series and then decide that I don't like it! If it doesn't knock my socks off in the first episode then I don't bother with it anymore.
-
Reading the files at the compendium it says that 1-2 megaroads were launched per year, if they did this straight on till the launch of the New Macross was first launch it would equal out to 37. Although we have up to at least 13 New Macross fleets being mentioned with the 13th being mentioned in VFX2, so it would actually be around 43 really.
Like you quoted I wouldn't worry about it too much because if you did then you'd start to realize that Humanity is mostly subsumed into the Zentraedi by the time M:F comes around.

-
Nice work indeed!
How's the top cap open?

character development this season blows. Hiro, Peter, Mohinder, its like they all took the stupid pill. Case in point:
Victoria: You killed Kaito and the others didn't you?
Peter Petrelli: No we're saving the world!
Victoria: He broke into the lab and tried to release the virus.
(See at this point Peter should use his mind reading powers on her and Adam...)
Hiro: He killed my father. He must die.
Peter: No! I need him. We're going to save the world!
Seriously, the guy can't take a hint.
vinnie
Too many powers. Too many characters. Too short a season. They wrote their own graves with this.
With such a HORRIBLE season do people actually think that they will want this series back in a year or 3? Let alone remember the series?
-------------------
Now to past the time. Let's make a "Which Hero characters have what Comic Book Heroes powers?" list!
Peter = Ultraboy from DC's L.E.G.I.O.N

These are good times to be an anime fan. DVD's have never been cheaper.
I stopped reading after this sentence because it's a flat out total lie, which frames the rest of the article in such a bias light that it must be disregarded on the whole.
One of THE main reasons that anime is dying in America is the simple "grow, grow, grow" ideal that capitalism has embraced and the natural sales limit that anime has always had. And the OTHER main reason is that localization company's, Japanese distribution copyright holders, and creators have not actively pursued the emerged Internet Fan Subber/Translator as nearly as actively as they could've. It's quite "the pit of self pity".
Soooo to all the people who are complaining about loses... "GOOGLE DO YOU USE IT, desu?"

Oh the Localization company's get this. But the subs would have to nearly double in volume in order for the company's to see the same profits and the market is way to much of a niche for that to happen easily!
