Woof! A little warning next time!!
All sage advise folks. -
He has his flaws, and while these flaws are tempered by those around him, you never really get the sense that he's changed by them so much as held in check.
Contained and managed... Very well put!

JB0, You are confused. Yes there are shaders or materials (varies between programs) called Toon Shaders currently now called Cel Shaders, but it's only a name so the user can more easily understand it's function and even then the name varies between programs. It's kind of a bastardized throw-back term to tradional Cel work, but the term is so widely used now it covers much of anime styled work and can no longer be said that it belongs to a singular technique. Like many traditional animation terms it's been shorted.
The outline of the drawing is inked or photocopied onto the cel, and gouache or a similar type of paint is used on the reverse sides of the cels to add colors in the appropriate shades.I did mis-state something though. It's not a technique, but an artistic style. I thank Radd for reminding me of that.

Use NetFlicks then you're guarenteed to get them.
BTW, Kazutaka Miyatake did much of the TERRA design concepts. Which is very neat!
-
Ummm.... The current cartoons ARE cel-shaded, at least from the shots I've seen.
Cel shading is a technique to make 3D polygonal models look hand-drawn. NOT the term for hand-drawn animation.
Ummm did you read what you wrote?
A person coloring the cel IS cel shading. It's a single technique used by both 2D & 3D, thus the name carry over for the technique. It's no coincidence that Basara's birthday (and mine, btw
) is August 15th. August 15th is the date Japan surrendered in World War II and is often referred to by Japanese people as "end of war day". peace
Which only reinforces the fact, along with the little music video that shows him traveling on a still ruined Earth that clearly helped him form his VP, that he is strictly anti-war. But he is so anti-war that he would just as soon as watch everyone kill themselves than protect anyone or choose a side beyond his own, and if he's forced to he blames others for his own actions (pros & cons to that). Overall I don't know whether the Basara figure was a condemnation of both the youth of the time for their shallowness, a condemnation of the nation on the whole for it's anti-war mind set, or a glorification of both! But he is a flat and more or less boring character when you pull out the whole 'super-powers' bit.
But if you toss out Basara's "meh!" and watch the rest of M7 it's ok, but not awesome.

So here we have Jamie Summers, yet another rock 'em, sock 'em, bigger and better than anything with balls chick who pouts all day and ponders the meaning of her mysterious life. What a snooze fest. The action-chick character has become a worn and tired cliche and this is just another pathetic reminder of that fact. If anyone wants to get the gist of this trash, just watch an episode of Dark Angel, Alias, Xena, whatever...
Well the theme has worked for the last 50+ years why change now?
I mean this is what you get when people slavishly watch garbage for years and then drop it because it's beyond bad, but then jump on "the next great thing!" that's a clone of the first. Don't like the show, don't support it by watching it.
But they have tried to make it work. They pulled enough regulars from other shows in an attempt to! They know it's a dog, but they trying anyways.
@ David Hingtgen, yeah LIFE isn't too bad. But more of the cliche slow speaking red haired cop? Take out the ZEN stuff and it's pretty bad.
-
There are dozens of pieces of line art on the released DVD's. You should rent them. There is also the artbook for the series...
-
I've never really liked the designs in M7 mainly because they just because too Metran with all of the curves. Toss in the healthy resemblance to Gundams and not even the somewhat interesting, though still very Patlabor, design was very good(looks more like a cop than anything).

cant .... tounge

It's not only a single country.
@ valkyrie13, There is quite a difference between written and the spoken word. Plenty of people out there can speak well, but can't diagram a sentence and vise versus!

Man RY! Two models at the same time!!

The entire idea is quite fabulous!
I completely love the idea of have translated articles from magazines as well as up-to-date information on current anime mecha.

I don't think azrael was speaking about designs. Taking into considering the likelihood of a complete visual redesign (likely akin to either Transformers, or simply pushing a more MOSPEADA visual style), changing/omitting certain words (Like how they apparently omitted the word "zentradi" from Shadow Chronicles, instead simply calling them "aliens", and the only instance of the UN Spacey fighting kite it was turned into a larger logo/altered enough to get away), and enough changes to the story, and it will be an entirely "Robotech" product, like Shadow Chronicles apparently was.
Yeah you can do a ton of changes. But would it even look remotely like the material that attracted we english viewers 20+ years ago? Would it be near the story that is told in either?
Just look at the tangent that SC had to go to in order to move away from their basis and make a somewhat original universe out of it!! And the movie would have to be a logical predecessor of SC in order for it to have traction within the RT community.

umm... the Lex/Supergirl love storyline wasn't between Lex and Kara Zor-El... EVER. It was between Lex and the Matrix Supergirl... and the Matrix Supergirl was retconed out of existence so it never happened.
Never got past the "Lex love angle" did you.

-
Actually it was a little of both.
But mainly when company's close down it often takes 1-3 years before the final paperwork is completely done and it's totally official. Now will they attempt to sell their licenses to other company's or will they sit on them until the contract expires, yearsssss down the road, and they revert back.
Hell, the number of abandoned and held licenses of anime & manga has had to have reached 2000+ the last 10-15 years.

He's RedKryptoniteClark with a skin cracking problem. Honestly, the show doesn't seem to try anymore. They try to have Superman comic/tv/movie characters, then completely re-write them to lose everything that made them memorable....Yeah, they've been picking and choosing what they 'think' works and what doesn't and it's turned into a mess. Especially with the SuperGirl material. Looks like they are going to use the Lex love angle from the comics but without the rest. But she doesn't matter anyhow because they've had other Kryptonians on the show, so it kills the impact quite a bit.

It's like watching a slow-mo Rocky fight scene.

Myth, Marathon and Halo, 16 years of making popular games... hardly a "one trick pony" Haters can blast away at halo all they want, but it remains one of the, if not THE most popular FPS on any console and it's been that way for years.
Very much the example of a one trick pony. Go through A to B. Have to go back to A with 'something' from B to get to C. Wash repeat throughout game. That just described 90% of all of their games, though it does cover 80% of ALL games on the consoles(LOL!).
Halo has always been thought to be part of the Marathon universe most of the informed Halo fanbase sees that. And I'm not a 'hater' of halo, nor am I a 'hater' of Bungie, but it's as clear as your fanboi posting the Bungie got lazy after Marathon's success and it shows in their designs.

maybe, but david webers name was bigger on the book. maybe just to sell more but still.
It's an author thing. Generally the author's name is splashed on the cover like this.
And yes BOLO's XXXII's for the win!!
-
No. Why should they be? Let me say this again, this is Robotech not Macross. Big West has nothing to do with Robotech. A lot of people are failing to see the legal (and possibly creative) distinction. RT may be using Macross footage, but it's still RT, not Macross.
They can get nailed just like you could nail someone for using your designs without credit or getting liscencing for them.
Expect a complete redesign at every level similar to either BSG2, Transformers, or Smallville.

-
Gotta wonder how long the titles they have will stay in limbo though...

Damn company's hold them for years.
-
>snip<
Oh, and Oihan, back to your original question, [not spoiler] There are many hints and references throughout Halo, and it's been said that the Master Chief and the protagonist from the Marathon games are the same.[/not spoiler]
Many players have felt that way from the very beginning. Halo is popular mainly because of the multi-player, the Red VS Blue videos, and MS's hype-machine. Halo's always been a 'next gen' DOOM anyways.
Bungie is a one trick pony and their next game will prove that.

Has anyone considered the reason they've moved the release to 2009 is that they decided to start from scratch all over again in favor of a more polished product (valks, plot, staff, everything) ?
Starting over?
I can't buy into that line of reasoning.
I think that would've leaked out and turned into a shitstorm of articles about how Satelite and Kawamora were at odds over the production. Also if they have indeed started over that means quite abit of the production was utter crap from one of their viewpoints, was cost projected through the roof, or the productions requirements needed people that they could in no way schedule to work on the project.
To be honest since they have projected the show for 2009 and with Kawamora having a rather full plate the last few years, epsecially this year, I think that they have shown mainly more current pre-production material(including the video capture). Getting the singer/actress this year, they'll have to tailor the voice material to her, and more than likely using the "animate-to-the-actors" method of character animating. Both of which require time to do. Getting ahead on the CG work for a weekly show. All of which demands scheduling and timing to get done. I think that it's just a simple matter of getting the needed items in place.

How does copyright affect an original painting which resembles an existing character? If I painted Mel Gibson, would I have to pay royalties to Mel Gibson? Could I sell copies of my original artwork even if it was MG's Face? Would it matter if it was MG's face at all? In the same sense, If I painted an original version of a VF-1S, would I have to pay HG to be able to sell my painting? Even if it is an original creation of an existing shape? For example T-shirts with this design....
If I paint an original of an existing copyrighted franchise... I guess I must pay copyright fees? Is the shape itself of the VF-1S or anything else copyrighted? Wouldn't it propagate or advertise the original and already existing artwork, if my version was sold?
I'm I crazy?
Please help...
In the US you can paint, draw, or duplicate ANY copyrighted design. However you MUST ask and receive their permission first to sell it in any way. Also, if the copyright holder is a right big Tom Cruise about it, you can't show to the public in any mass gathering or in a group unless you given permission. In ALL cases you MUST credit the design to the copyright holder.
Don't forget there are at least 2 copyright holders. The Intellectual Copyright and standard Copyright. If you only get the consent of 1 then you'll have to ask a judge to hear the case, because neither can over-ride the other.
However, and this it the drop dead funniest part, many times buildings, artworks, and other designs that are copied into a work are conveniently voided if the person who did the creation claimed to be an "artist".

Great opener. I am pleased with the back story on the previous generation too.
I thought that it was pretty flat. Lack of compelling advertising set-up did them in on that front. They also had some fairly bad decisions made during it's writing. Flyer should've stayed "assumed" dead, the whole redemption arc will be extremely passe' because it's been done to death, which would've allowed them to better focus on other characters. But it's falling quite into the place where I said it would nearly from the beginning, they'll work as a team.. blah, blah, blah, S2 is now officially S3-4 of X-men.
Plague girl is basically a language extension and 'the' mystery element for the season. Takers on what the next new characters language will be!!
They'll need a french/german soon and if it follows form than they'll be one of the "badguys".Element Lad, ROFL!, needed to be someone else though I'm not gonna condemn their actor pick.
Still trying to figure out where 'better off dead' Peter got his 'cold/electric' power.

Space sets are expensive. Its probably set in a normal every day middle america town because its cheaper...

Here's why I can't buy that statement.
It takes several million dollars for on-site filming and a metric-poo-ton of scheduling to get everyone there in the first place. Yet on-lot studio filming costs basically the same amount of money and time to do. The FX costs would only be slightly higher because they went with suits and not digital creatures, so few FX materials would need to be built and after they were built it would only be a matter of animating them.
It's just a lack of wanting to follow the established universes. Hell, only Predator was based on Earth and only P2 was based near civilization with the Alien series being nearly completely ship based.

Guys, some important things that everyone is forgetting:
1) TV scheduling. What if instead of a crap time slot in the immediate future, they opted for a good time slot in the medium future.
2) production company scheduling. The company working on Engage Planet Kissdom is supposed to do Macross F, right, so when is Kissdom going to be finished?
In addition, and I am just speculating here, Macross 7 was a rather lengthy TV series, right. Macross F is just as likely to be equally lengthy, if not more so. Therefore, extra time is needed to figure out the various plots, as Macross is definitely not written on an episodic maintain the status que formula.
On number 1 I agree with though scheduling always opens up, but 2 years ahead.... naw a single year maybe and then your still spending months on polishing "finished" episodes with very little monetary return. Any advertiser would be hard pressed to put up the money even for the hallowed "Macross" name sake.
On number 2.... I thought Engage Planet was finished already? But then again waiting until 2009 is a full 1.5 years. Even if EP was still running they'd have over 8 months to polish the macross episodes.
The one thing I will buy into though would be that they learned ALOT from M0 and are giving themselves enough lead time so they don't have to push through FUGLY episodes.

The Zentraedi capital ships didn't get much in the way of looks. They pretty much all look like green turds. The creative juices must have stopped flowing shortly after the SDF-1 and VF-1 were inked.
That's a fairly un-informed remark.

Especially given how nearly every design was reworked several times(take a look at the concept work from Perfect Memory). Also the Human forces were made side by side with the Zentraedi and both had a specific role to fill out personable "Hero" designs and unlikable "Bad Guy" designs.
The fact that people associate the Zen ships with turds tells me that they very much got the reaction that they wanted. "Hate the Bad Guy. Love the Heroes!"

Mr March,
Only differences that I can see is the lack of tip cannon that the VF has. But with the incredible closeness to the Fz-109A (pg 153 Design Works not the refined version of the A) that the 14 design has it's only difference (from this angle) is a slightly canopy difference and the lack of engine cannons, that looks to be the clear type, which tells me only that it's a 14 or Fz.
Where in the Macross time line does this M+ episode take place?? That would help some or further confuse the issue! lol!
@Sumdumgai, an early VF-19 I'd hazard, but the canopy is flat out VF-17! :\
