  1. You know, I came *this* close to giving it a credit byline. I was going to say "credit to veef"---but what exactly would be preferred? (And I did search a while for an alternative, but after 15 mins, gave up and swiped yours---has NO ONE else photographed the accessories? Was hoping I could find an official pic from Arcadia)

(would have preferred a pic of just that missile, then I could link back to your review and give you a few hits!)

What would be preferred is not to crop our logo out of the photo.

  2. Sorry, but missiles that are top-of-the-line in 2040, are not going to look right in 2009. It'd be like putting AMRAAM's and laser-guided-smart-bombs on a P-51 Mustang. Especially since the VF-0's weaponry is already well-established. (and half of which wasn't included at all with the 0D release).

It's a fictional toy airplane robot armed with fictional missiles, chief. Pretty sure I can put any missiles I want on there.

  3. David,I know you're a fan of Disney's Frozen, so take a hint from your girl Elsa... you've got a lot of people telling you to calm down already. If it was anyone else that wasn't a mod they would have been less polite. Let these guys enjoy $300 purchase, it's a lot of money, stop spoiling it for everyone else.

You always were my favorite mod.

Can't wait for mine to arrive. People complaining about the colors seem to be forgetting that the real joy of a Macross toy is in the transformation and function. The 0D is a bit of a new trick compared to what we're used to, very excited to see how it works!

  4. I think he's just venting which is understandable. I can't fault someone for venting a little as long as it's not all they do.

Based on my mostly lurking for the past few years, that does seem to be about all he does ;)

  5. Missed it again, I was asleep. Everyone praising Bandai is an idiot. This type of thing for EVERY SINGLE THING THEY SELL is complete and utter bullshit.

Why do you even come here? You didn't get a toy you wanted, so everyone that likes it is an idiot? I've got news for you, you aren't Bandai's customer. The toy released while you were asleep because it wasn't for you, and if you really wanted it, you would have been awake for it.

  6. A decade? You're math is a bit off.

    1/72 yf-19 == 2000 release

    1/60 yf-19 noFP == 2006 release.

1/60 yf-19 FP (both separate addon and included with the yf-19) == 2007 release.

Seven years rounds to ten :p You're right, I was a bit off, but my point still stands. People's signatures used to be FILLED with cries for a 19FP release. It was a huge sore spot. Then we finally got our wish, but it wasn't perfect. Now Arcadia's taken another stab and someone complains. In the last five years have we been so inundated with YF-19 FAST packs, so many as to choke out the sun, that we can't bear the thought of a new release including these once-hallowed accessories on the first release?

The real problem with the YF-19 FAST packs is that they aren't substantial enough to release on their own. That's why Yamato packed them with the Fold Booster, which people complained was overpriced because all they wanted was the armor. Instead, Arcadia packed them in from the get go so there would be no confusion or uncertainty, but still people complain. Where does it end?

  7. All those external missiles aren't even really canon to a lot of people...

    Name five.

The missiles are shown in an official book, so they are fair game. You also have no way to gauge what impact the inclusion of the missiles had on the price. As usual, you are just spouting off because you don't like something for a fickle reason, therefore it's invalid and shouldn't exist.

  8. Arcadia did everything backwards---everyone gets the FAST packs and non-screen-accurate missiles, and many didn't want it/didn't want to pay extra for it. I would have MUCH rather had a $100 cheaper "bare" YF-19. It's got about the lamest FAST packs of any valk, and the missiles---were only ever seen in a book I don't own. Every time I look at that huge YF-19 box, I think what a waste half the contents of that box are---stuff I'll never use and never wanted, but I paid for and paid to ship over here.

But tons of people want the VF-25 boosters---and few will be able to acquire them! :( I'd like them---but not nearly enough to go through the hoops required.

People spent a decade begging Yamato for YF-19 FAST Packs. Arcadia decides to give everyone the complete package upfront and you're complaining? Give me a break.

  9. Considering how many people have had problems with the looseness of just their YF-19 ankles, to say nothing of the previous three releases, a side comment "they're loose, but they work" is a brush off for a bigger problem. He took a pic of the 29 right next to the 19. Are the 29's ankles loose but they work? Has anybody had problems with the ankles on their Isamu 29? I think it's valid to compare and contrast and say, hey, these ankles are not stable enough. Bandai got it right, Arcadia continues where Yamato left off by getting it wrong again. Even if he didn't own a single other 19 (which he obviously does from the photos) it seems like a brush off. People need to know they're still problematic.

My review is based on my experience with the toy I received. I can't predict the future, maybe the YF-19's ankles will hold up. Have the ankles on my VF-19s loosened up a bit? Sure. They still don't fall over, and are plenty stable on the shelf in both battroid and Gerwalk modes. I'm sorry if you have had a worse experience, but I'm not reviewing the toy you received. You make it sound like I was bought and paid for because my experience didn't match yours. Furthermore, I took a photo of the YF-19 alongside the YF-29 because they look cool together, not to spark a doctoral thesis on the differences between them. I've got Bandai DX valks with way looser hips than any of my -19 ankles, but that's not what I was reviewing. My review is based on the toy I got in the box I paid for, and that toy was good.

Arcadia are not the only company doing macross stuff. Always keep in mind the competition when doing a review.

Arcadia is the only company making a new 1/60 scale YF-19 toy today. I don't really write my reviews specifically as buying guides, but if our theoretical buyer is looking for a toy of the YF-19 in 1/60 scale, his options are this or the Yamato one, so that's what I wrote about.

  10. someone should let him know how the canopy opens without pushing the nose down.

Ha, I figured someone would notice that. I really did try, but couldn't seem to get all the parts in the right spot at the same time.

Hmm, that was a glowing report, no mention of the criticisms at all.

That's not totally fair. I mentioned the ankles, and even said that mine are a little loose, just like on all my Yamato VF-19s, which tightened up fine with a little nail polish, and I mentioned that the FAST Packs for the legs don't stay on well.. Is there some other glaring flaw I was supposed to notice? Everything else works perfectly on mine.

  11. I'm not even concerned about a cockpit at the moment, the scale on WC ships is insane, and even at this size, it's close to 1/200 scale. I don't think the clear filiment would ever make a usable canopy anyway, due to the layering process.

I can probably print the main body components all the same way as the upper fuselage, so those I'm not concerned with too much, but this wing is a puzzle. It covers nearly the entire printing area at the size I'm aiming for, and I was able to print a test copy flat, but at some point in the print, part of the wing came loose and warped upwards. Besides that, the underside was so covered with layers of support structure it was impossible to clean up.

I'm experimenting with either cutting the wing in half and molding it from the center outward, or building my own support structure to hold the thing in place, because to two times I've tried printing it vertically, it came loose within the first few layers.

Looks awesome! All those panel lines are impressive. For your wings, I've managed to print similar parts vertically before, and if you can get it to work, that'll yield your best print quality. Printing the wings laying flat will require you to have two wing halves that sandwich together, and that'll be tough to get them assembled without any gaps. The key factors to getting long skinny parts like that to print vertically are the bed heat and the platform calibration. How long are you letting your bed preheat? If you really let it cook for close to the full hour, and have the platform tightly calibrated, your prints should stay stuck down.

  12. Good God you can say that again! I have to display him without it. It's so big its stupid... which makes me wonder why no 3P ever did a smaller cannon and filler leg parts to make it less skinny. I'd buy that kit.

There were official leg filler bits with the extra cannon accessories, I thought. You are right about the scope/arm gun, though. It sits so high far off the arm and tips the toy over.

  13. Then why bring up an obscure piece of artwork that is very atypically colored as some sort of "proof" that "the coloring's fine" in response to comments on the colors? How many TF fans would be ok with the "Autobot red" insignia shown there and a ruby-red arm cannon? Just because "it happened once" doesn't mean it's seen as expected/desired/acceptable for what is essentially going to be "the definitive figure of the last 20 years" for Galvatron.

    Dark purple.

  14. Nice job! I love the classical, almost ThreeA-ish designs and weathering. I mean every word of it; these are beautiful and inspiring.

BTW, I'm also an UP! user; I'm using an UP! Plus 2, though.

Did you print those in separate pieces or fully assembled?

Thanks! I print in pieces and assemble them like model kits. That way I can orient each piece the best way for the 'grain' of the printing process. Most of my figures are between 5 and 20 parts.

  15. Man, I've gotta check on here more often. I logged in to check on something else, and I'm glad to see a 3D printing thread going strong here!

At this point a lot of you probably don't even know me, but I used to be on here quite a bit collecting Macross and building models. Now I'm into something else... I have started my own toy line of 3D printed mecha toys designed by me, printed on my UP Mini printers, and painted by me. I've spent the last year developing designs and having a few soft releases, but 2014 is when I hope to kick things off for real.

I make toys in a couple of scales, and most of my designs are inspired by my love for classic Real Robot shows like VOTOMS, Dougram, Dorvack, and the Maschinen Krieger line. Below are a couple examples from early on in development, before I had really figured out my surface finishing process:

    bt-ostrich-08.jpg?w=1000&h=750

    bt-ostrich-03.jpg?w=1000&h=750

    bt-desert-07.jpg?w=1000&h=750

    striking-tortoise-01-06.jpg?w=767&h=1024

These big guys were articulated using a combination of plastic on plastic printed joints, and standard Koto polycaps for the hips and shoulders. I've had some trouble with consistency from the aftermarket joints, though, so this guy is currently under revision to make it 100% printed joints.

After the first couple, I started using an acetone vapor treatment to smooth over the surface of my parts. Now I don't have to do any sanding, and the parts come out smooth and glossy. There's some balance to be struck between getting everything perfectly smooth and starting to have an impact on the details, but I'm generally pretty pleased with the results:

Let me know what you guys think, and if you have any questions about printing or finishing parts, I'm happy to help!

  16. I must be dumb. I saw this last weekend and thought it was fun enough. I went online afterwards and read the real story, and can see why people would be turned off by the embellishments. I liked 300, and this seems cut from a similar cloth.

I'm fully willing to accept that it's a bad samurai movie, though. Unfortunately, it's the first samurai movie I've seen, so I'm real curious now to watch some of the 'classics'.

  17. The 3A Spartan (there are 2 versions and I ordered both) is really nice but it does have it's flaws. The rubber suit is one complaint I personally have with it and my only problem with the rubber suit is not knowing how long it's gonna last. It's also surprisingly light. It's not heavy feeling at all.

The other issue I have with mine is the knee pads are just glued to the rubber suit. Mine was hanging by a thread when it arrived and the knee armor basically just fell off and came loose from shipping. It's a terrible knee design.

Other than that, it's a really nice figure. I'm currently waiting on the shipment of the blue Carter version (hopefully the knees stay on)...

Awww, that's too bad about your kneepads. Mine are glued to the actual knee under the suit, so they are rock solid. I can see how that'd be difficult to fix if they were loose, though.

I think the rubber suit is going to hold up pretty well, since it is cut in all of the high traffic areas. The typical tearing you see on things like Henshin Cyborg suits is under the armpits and around the groin, and those areas are all separate parts on the Halo dude. Being thinner than other rubber suits might also help, since there is less strain required to flex the suit. We'll see, but I am hopeful.

We (I)'ve got a Carter on the way, and I'll do a video review for that one as well as the usual write-up.

  18. Long time no post and all, but I was skimming this thread and noticed there were a lot of questions and not enough pictures ;) I've been picking up a lot of 1/6 stuff lately and covering it for CollectionDX and thought you guys would enjoy the pics:

I've got the regular 3A Halo Carter and the Hot Toys Iron Man MkVII (and the IM3 stuff) all on the way, too, so there's lots more reviews coming!

  19. Well, think of it like the blue "movie" Alto VF-25 release.. it was different, no one bought it because they thought it looked dumb, and it got marked down heavily in clearance sales. The color didn't bug me, so I was happy to get a VF-25F with super packs at a huge discount.

Yamato may have learned with the VF-22s, but this is one valk I would LOVE for them to overproduce. In its standard colors? Yeah, it's ugly. But this is also the absolute best candidate for making customs, since it's white.

If I saw these on clearance with a hefty discount, I would pick up multiples just for repainting, and I'm sure a lot of people here would do the same.

Repainting a VF-19 sounds like just about the worst idea you could have.

  20. you could easily change the mounts yourself to line them up if you want, just by reshaping the supports by filing/superglue/etc.

Then do this and let the rest of us enjoy what we're seeing so far and look forward to learning more. You and DH have made your point, and it's clear that nothing will ever make you happy. If you guys have such absolute requirements for such things, why not just make your own? Clearly you're requirements are above that of us 'regular buyers', so you clearly need an extra special product.

And besides, if you're signature is nothing but a list of complaints about Yamato toys, then why keep reading and posting about them anyway? Find something that makes you happy to get worked up about.

  21. I'm pretty sure Graham mentioned it many months ago to them, but got no reply.

That's because Yamato's not run by crazy people.

Honestly, if the angle of those fins is enough to completely ruin a toy we've waited years for, then it doesn't sound like you were going to be happy no matter what. The level of your nit-pickery has reached a new high. You're complaining about accuracy to supplementary details added after the fact to something that was animated for an appearance measured in seconds.
