  1. I'm seconding that. DVD was already the accepted standard when the PS2 came out. Blu-Ray isn't yet, and might never be. And from what I understand, HD-DVD isn't actually supposed to be all that expensive, since they can be manufactured with only slight modifications to the production equipment. If HD-DVD is chosen as the standard, I predict players will debut at $300.
  2. I've mostly just stuck to Nintendo, SNES, and Gameboy Color (the ones I spent the most time with as a kid). I'm waiting for a better version of VBA to be released.
  3. Oh yeah, I picked it up the day it came out, and have been waiting for the boards to come back up to talk about it! Well, compared to Feddie vs. Zeon, here are some quick thoughts: +Seems longer than FvsZ +Z Gundam MS! (Gundam MkII Is my second-favorite MS) +The ability to find alternate histories +Playing as the main characters +Don't have to wait for MS to be repaired, so I can play as many missions as I want in the MkII. -Too many characters have the same missions. -Since you can use better MS as much as you want, you spend a lot of time in "hero" MS, and you don't really spend a lot of time piloting stuff like Hizacks or Marasais. Overall, I'd say it's the Gundam game that came out so far, especially for fans. But UC mode kind of begs the question... why couldn't they have taken a little more time, created a few more areas, added more pilots, routes, and MS, and taken UC mode all the way to Char's Counterattack? I mean, some of the alternate routes have you playing out some of the events, but with Z Gundam MS. The AEUG was already in play, Axis was already in play, plus the ZZ Gundam was already in play. And I would have loved for a chance to play as the Nu Gundam or a Zaku III. How far along is everyone? I'm just past 200%.
  4. I'm not sure what the people at Sony are thinking, and I'm not sure if those were the only choices in the poll or not... but I think everyone has a limit that they're willing to spend on a next-gen console. For me, that'd be somewhere in the ballpark of $300... and I'm not sure that Sony's willing to go that low on the PS3. Souce: Gamespot article If the PS3 is going to cost more than $350 (and industry people are prediciting $400), I might have to hold off on it.
  5. Here's a really interesting one. Virus kills cancer.
  6. New downloads for Wipeout Pure tomorrow.
  7. According to a booklet they handed out at the theater, they built 4 Bat tumblers and they cost about $1.7 million each. Wonder where they got that info. Okay, I poked around a little for more info. According to Batman: Birth of the Demon (TPB, 1992), Ra's Al Ghul was born 600-700 years ago to a tribe of nomads in the desert of Arabia, who's ancestors originally came from China. So, I guess that would make him both Arab and Asian. Al Ghul was interested in science, so went to town, married, and became a doctor. During that time, he discovered the Lazarus Pit. He used it to save a dying prince, but I guess he wasn't prepared for the temporary insanity that the Pit causes. The prince flipped out and killed Al Ghul's wife. The king didn't want to punish his son, so he declared that Al Ghul had commited the crime. Al Ghul escaped, rejoined his tribe, and then sent the prince gifts infected with a deadly disease. The king and the prince went to Al Ghul for a cure, but instead he killed them both, then led his tribe to raze the city and kill everyone in it. Afterwards, Al Ghul spent the next several centuries traveling the world, picking up new skills, building up the League of Assassins, and amassing a huge fortune.
  8. I thought he was Arabic. Ra's Al Ghul is Arabic for "the Demon's Head." His right hand man, Ubu, was always calling Batman "infidel" as well, and I thought infidel is a Muslim term for a non-Muslim.
  9. Not me, man. You're one of my favorite people to chat with, partly for the depth of seemingly trivial/overly technical knowledge locked in your brain, and partly for your willingness to strongly argue on any side of a debate just for the sake of discussion. Yeah, that's the impression that I got. Designed with 8 SPE's for symmetry, designed to run on 7 in the PS3. Cell's with more SPE's defective might be saved for other products. Actually, I think that's part of the issue. The Cell is supposed to be smaller than a typical chip. The Cell, then, is more difficult to manufacture, because everything has to be so precise. That's also partly the reason no one's really bothered to make chips like the Cell until now.
  10. Well, I'm sure JB0 can offer more insight into the actual feasibility of this kind of strategy... but it looks like the PS3 will be defective right out of the box. Kutaragi story
  11. Yeah, but I think that Marvel has just been flooding the market with comic book movies lately, so they're not as exciting as they were. Also, I think that even with the passage of time, some people still remember the older Batman movies, and might have been a bit put off.
  12. When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth. Graam Yeah, but see, if I remember the original NotLD, there WAS an explaination. It had to do with some radiation or something that came from a crashed satellite. Really? I live right by where the original Dawn of the Dead was filmed. The mall's be remodeled a lot since it was filmed (the skating rink was where the food court is today), but it's still kind of cool to watch the movie and think, "I've been there."
  13. As much as I liked Romero's original Dead trilogy, I'm sick of zombie movies in general. I absolutely hated the Dawn of the Dead remake, and would classify it as gore without substance. And even Romero's own Land of the Dead just isn't looking all that appealing to me. I think Shaun of the Dead will be the last zombie flick I see for awhile.
  14. I've owned the same CD player since I was in Jr. High, the same DVD player since maybe a year after the PS2 came out. I've had my Xbox since it came out, and I've had my Gamecube since it came out. The CD player in my car has been there for three years. Aside from my PS2 going bad, I'm yet to have to recalibrate any of them. So.....you use each of those devices for 3-4 hrs daily? The car CD player? No, I live pretty close to everything, so I guess that only runs for maybe an hour a day average. Likewise on the DVD player. And my Gamecube... well, it's almost in mint condition, considering how little I've used it. But my CD player... you wouldn't believe how much use it got. I remember I used to turn down the volume on my TV, then throw a CD on while I played with my SNES. And in high school, if I was home, I had a CD on. My Xbox, though? Yeah, I got through periods of inactivity when I don't use it, because I'm playing a PS2 game. But when it's the Xbox's turn... well, I finished the first KOTOR in four days. I can easily play for six or more hours, if I'm into a game.
  15. Fry's Electronics had the PS2/Gamecube/XBOX Batman Begins for $29.99 last week. I wonder if it's any good. I picked it up for PS2. It's a tad easy, but I think it's pretty good.
  16. I chalked it up to his enhanced agility and spider-sense. It's true that Spidey has his super powers, but as a character, I've always felt that Spidey was more accessible than Batman. Batman is cool, don't get me wrong and he gets props for using brains instead of super powers... but Bruce Wayne IS Batman. I mean, Bruce Wayne is just a goofy persona that Batman wears to hide himself from the public eye. But once the cowl went on, Bruce Wayne ceased to exist. (Not to mention that he was filthy rich, and didn't have to worry about how to balance his checkbook when he got home from roping up gangsters). Spidey, though... he got powers, but he never asked for them. It took him time and the death of his uncle before he thought to use his powers for good. And even then, he was constantly dealing with relationship issues, school, work, finances, etc. He might have put on a mask to get away and web-swing from time to time, but he was always Peter Parker. Anyway, finally saw the movie today. I enjoyed it a lot, and I definately think it was the best Batman movie to date. I loved the way they stayed away from the more popular villians like the Joker, the Penguin, etc, and went for some second stringers like Ra's Al Ghul and Scarecrow. I loved how they really examined exactly what the murder of his parents did to Bruce, and how that path led him to becoming the Batman. But I wouldn't exactly call it the best superhero movie ever. I think that's still subjective to whichever superhero comic book you liked best. I was always a huge Spidey fan, so I do still prefer the Spider-Man movies.
  17. I find it highly ironic to hear one of the "PlayStation or nothing" crowd refering to himself as the realist, and the multiple console owners as "Sega and Xbox fanboys." GTA, and now Final Fantasy, are showing up on Microsoft's consoles as well. No Ace Combat or Xenosaga games have been announced for the PS3, nor does Sony have any sort of exclusivity contracts with Namco on either of those series. Indeed, only MGS4 is a for sure thing on the PS3... but Hideo Kojima has expressed his interests to develop games for the Xbox 360 as well. And aside from maybe Ace Combat, I'm more interested in sequels to Jade Empire and Fable (Fable being confirmed for the 360, Jade Empire all but confirmed as one of the two games BioWare has announced that they're working on for the 360).
  18. Well. I finally got around to trying this out. Works just fine once you fiddle with the framerate and CPU speed. Check it out. Running some classic SNES games. How difficult is it to get everything up and running? Is the swapping a pain?
  19. AFAIK, it is definately set in the years between Episode III and Episode IV. And while major characters might have cameo roles, the series is supposed to focus on minor characters who had little or no roles in the movies.
  20. Myself and my three closest friends, all of whom had multiple consoles, would alternate between the consoles. That is, sometimes it'd seem like Xbox was going through a hot streak, and a month or two would go by before we'd touch our PS2s. But then PS2 would be on a hot streak, and we'd be using it for something like 4-5 hours a day every day for a month. My brother, who bought a PS2 well after launch, found that it didn't work pretty much out of the box. He exchanged it, and he'd play for maybe 5-6 hours a week for a year. Then it died, so he bought an Xbox. Okay, so based on you and your friends experience. The consoles didn't have a life span anywhere near the length that they should. I'm interested to see what Blaine has to say, since I don't know if he has done any tweaking or how long he has used it. Of course I've noticed that most companies these days tend to make shoddy products so that people will purchase from them again. IMO I think it is kind of sad that companies that build game consoles would do such a thing since they normally begin releasing another generation of consoles five years after the previous release. Edit: Not much point in double posting Togo-I wouldn't trust sales numbers that someone throughs up on message. Unless I happened to know if the site, that the info came from, was reliable. I don't know how long they had their PS2's for, but I do have a never-ending stream of customers that want to know what to do about their PS2s when they start going. Trust me, "disc read error" wouldn't have half the meaning it does if the problem was confined to me and my friends.
  21. I saw that, and I'm heartbroken. Kasumi was always my favorite of the DoA girls, and they cast ultra-ugly Devon Aoki for her? Well, videogame movies are supposed to suck, anway...
  22. My PC has about 2 grand in hardware in it, and I tweak it and clean it on a regular basis. Should I dump it in favor of an Xbox? There's a difference between upgrading your drivers and recalibrating your optical drive. And if you need to do that, may I suggest you stop buying generic optical drives? I've owned the same CD player since I was in Jr. High, the same DVD player since maybe a year after the PS2 came out. I've had my Xbox since it came out, and I've had my Gamecube since it came out. The CD player in my car has been there for three years. Aside from my PS2 going bad, I'm yet to have to recalibrate any of them.
  23. Myself and my three closest friends, all of whom had multiple consoles, would alternate between the consoles. But then PS2 would be on a hot streak, and we'd be using it for something like 4-5 hours a day every day for a month. Then it died, so he bought an Xbox. Sure, as long as your reasoning extends beyond "because you know Sony's going to dominate." Absolutely. Ironically, I play more games on and own more games for the PS2. The Xbox has had some really great games, but the PS2 does have more exclusvies. When it comes to games on both consoles, I'll get whichever version I find most accessible... that is, usually something like FPS on the Xbox, racers and fighers on the PS2. Looking ahead, though, I see launch games I actually want for the Xbox 360. I like the changes they're making to Live. I see Microsoft busting their asses trying to get more Japanese developers on board. But with Sony, I see them dicking around on the hard drive issue... again. I don't see a console that's leaps and bounds beyond the Xbox 360, despite the corporate hype. I can assume that they'll have some games I'll want (another God of War, please!), but they haven't announced anything that interests me yet. As an unbiased, hardcore gamer, I see more promise in the Xbox 360. That's true. But I'm not against the PS3, or people wanting the PS3. I'm sure there are people out there who might not think Fable 2, Halo 3, Perfect Dark Zero, DoA 4, etc, are that exciting. I'm sure there are people who would buy a PS3 just for the promise of Devil May Cry 4 or SOCOM 4. I've got no problem with that. I don't, however, consider "it must be good, because it's PlayStation" an informed decision. It may be more simple-minded consumerism than actual fanboy loyalty, but the end result is the same. The only difference is that a fanboy has more passion. Oh, and for those of you who still have their original PS2s, believe me when I say that you're a minority (and even then, most of you admitted to doing some "tweeking" to keep it working).
  24. We've got a pinned topic for Science and Technology, and we've got a pinned topic for Transformers, but we've got dozens of Star Wars threads laying around. So maybe this one will get pinned, and we can consolidate some of the SW threads? Anyway, I did a search for the old Star Wars TV thread, and I guess it got bumped of the boards. But, I wanted to share this with you guys. Boba Fett to be in Star Wars TV.
  25. This has got to be one of the stupidest things I've ever read on MarossWorld. Then I strongly suggest you go back and re-read your last 25 or so posts. LOL, why, all I have to do is read your one. Alright, I'll walk you thought it one more time, then. You sales figures say nothing about the upcoming generation. All they say is that Sony outsold the competition by large ammounts, and while I'm happy that your original PS2 still works, it's still a fact that the numbers would be lower if the PS2 wasn't such a shoddy unit and many people wound up buying more than one unit, the only question is how many units those repeat customers account for. I'm still comfortable saying half. Looking at Nintendo's sales numbers in your same post, we do see plenty of evidence that whoever leads the industry one day can be at the bottom the next. PlayStation will not always be the dominant brand. But most of all, what folly is it to buy into a brand known for making outrageous claims about the power of their hardware that wind up falling flat, a brand that's also know for selling shoddy hardware, simply because it outsold the competition previously? Like I told Blaine a few posts ago, it's one thing if you really like what exclusives a console has, and really believe that the competition has nothing you'd like, but to say, "I'll go with PS3, because PS2 outsold the competition" is probably the stupidest reason I can think of. Microsoft has proven the Xbox brand. To have outsold Nintendo on their first try in an industry where an American console hasn't even been remotely successful since the days of Atari says a lot. They are working harder to get more Japanese developers on board. Again, they might not pass Sony in this round, but they're going to catch up. And while I'm sure that the PS3 is going to end up with some games that'll have me buying one, right now the Xbox 360 looks like it's going to have better ones.
