I've decided... I'm just going to stop eating all together to be able to buy one

-
Now, please don't get me wrong... I'm speaking not in generality, but as "this was my first impression of CG" I Have learned to embrase CG, but... BUT... the original CGIs I have/had problems with when they came out and I still can't seem to enjoy them. Now as an example the Toy Story movies (please forgive my leaving the Anime genra), I love them (own the "Toy Box" DVD collectors edition) but if you view any of the decade old CGI animations they did... OMG they suck a$$ my specific example is "Tin Toy", I don't care if they won an award for it. Their animation and design of the "infant" (if you can call that flatchulent blob a realistic "infant") was horrible.

hmmm interesting site, has sheet music for many Anime songs:

Ghadrack, very interesting pic. horribly blurry, but interesting. Now, I'm currious... it might be the depth of field, the fuzzyness, the angle.... but why is there a Mac-0 sign sitting in front of it?

Also, comparing it to the guy's/gal's sholder in the background is kinda missleading... having been a photographer for more than a decade, the depth of field is so far off on that pic you can't scale it to anything in the background. Secondly I do have a problem if thats the mold proto-type... the arms on the monster appear to be way too long for its body (I will have to look at my materials to check the "scale")

I posted this on the Valk-Ex boards:
Posted: Jan. 20 2004,10:58--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now don't get me wrong... its gonna be the biggest toy I will have seen (Next to old Tanka Toys and some of the huge play-area style toys from the 80s)
Based upon specifications for Mac II (sources: Pal550 Robotech RPG, and artemisgames.com)
22.5M tall
41.1M long w/barrel, 22.1m w/o barrel
9.75M wide
186.3 tons
372,600 lbs
now with a scale of 1/60 (I'm going to round the numbers a bit)
14.75" tall
26.97" long w/barrel
6.4" wide
(now taking into account that 1/60 will be off all three dimentions, making its mass to be (1/60)^3 or 1/216,000)
If it were a true scale model it would weigh 1.73lbs. somehow I would guess its going to weigh more than that.
Also of note, every source seems to have different dimensions, but as I can tell these seem to be the closest to accurate.
hope that helps a little

Even though I'm not a CGI fan, I for one absolutly loved FF spirits within. I think it got a bum rap when it was in the theaters. Just the simple fact alone that every single hair on Aki Ross's head was indiviualy done, just mays me say "wow". Also the story was actually done quite well in Final Fantasy style (which a lot of people did not get). I own the DVD and several of the action figures (mint on the card of course
) I got hooked on FF with VII, and had to go buy a PS2 when X came out.IMO
Beastwars I found basically annoying, I watched a few eppisodes and I just could not get into it. Reboot (If I recall the series your refering to) I hated the CG but the story build was pretty interesting. The CG work from companies like Pixar I find just captivating, but its not Anime and outside the scope of this discussion. I grew up with the cartoons (and converted anime) of the 80s. Transformers, GI Joe, Looney Toons, Robotech, and countless others I can't remember anymore. My initial impression of the early CGI cartoons/Anime is they seemed to focus more on dazzleing us with high-def animation, and not dazzle us with intricate story building.

:nods: true true... but... there is the situation where someone picks up the box and Woops... OMG the flap caught the corner of the shelf and tore off...
in any case, call me picky but I like sealed boxes to actualy have some kind of seal holding it closed and cover-flaps should close neatly. to each, his or her own.
now on a different note, if I was intending on taking it out of the box to display it (or god forbid actually play with it)... then who cares

another idea is go to an office supply store and buy some velcro

-
Just a thought.... and ultimatly it might not be feasable... go to your local hobby shop (one of the Uber master shops, if you have one near where you live). I bet you could probably hook up with a master model builder who could repair/refinish the Valk. the General repair and patching would be the easy part for an accomplished modeler.. refinishing would be the tricky part... scuffs would litterally have to be sanded out and puttied (kind of like Bondo for a model) then painted. Some model builders are so thrilled by challange and attention to detail. I bet if you bought the supplies they would most likely do it for free or for little cost. Some just want to take pictures for postarity/display... "look what I did"
I would say that once it was refinished it would become a shelf only item (as the paint my chip or scuff)... but I think the shelf is where you meant it to be to begin with

just a thought....

I appologise these items I remember from the Robotech series and I dont' recall what the Macross equivalent(s) is(are) called:
1. Destroid Monster Mac II (I want one bigger than 1/60
)2. Destroid Multi-pack (leave out the Spartan, its ugly and weakly equipped compared to the others)
3. Glaug officers pod
4. 1/1 scale models of the different model planes that Rich Hunter had (i.e. the Focker model plane, and a few others if I recall)
5. SDF-1 Cruise mode
6. SDF-1 Combat mode
7. SDF-1 combat mode following the destruction of Dolza (Bolza's) base
8. all the Regult variations Multi-pack
9. tri-thuster
10. the Fan jet stunt plane
11. life size Minmei punching bag

IMO, being a minor collector myself I can understand the "lack of sealing material" compaint, be it tape or Velcro.... If your going to keep something sealed new in the box... and there is nothing to keep it "sealed"... how can you expect someone to look at it (presuming your going to sell it), see the lack of a "sealer" and actualy believe its never been opened. If I coughed up the dough, and they failed to put $.025 worth of tape or velcro on it, I might be a little miffed also.
I have a few un-opened special-box edition Anime DVDs and Toys... if they came without shrinkwrap, sealer, etc... I'd be miffed... heck I even look at the condition of the pricetag before I will buy it. To a collector, little things can mean several percent in its value. No biggie when your talking about $2, but 5% of a 1200 toy would be $60... let alone if it was a super-rare item and its value was many thousands of dollars.
I don't remember who put it out, but there was a limited release of a 1/12 Battleroid. They made only 5, and there was a special plaque on the back signifing its authenticity. The estimate collector value of one of these is many many thousands of dollars... would you be mad if the maker used a cheap glue (to save $.33) and the plate fell off. The item could loose 10% or more of its value? I'd be livid

ack! purple... lol I'm still in that confusion "Robotech/Macross" haze. I get them mixed up so easily
In anycase I think if they do really well on the Millia version, then come out with other variations... hopefully! they will come out with the Destroids!! I heard that they have canceled them, anyone else hear that? -
I'm sure its just meant to be a Millia (Miria... err... well forgive my spelling if I got either wrong)
depending on its popularity and if they get enough requests I'm sure they will release a green. Just like how there are now "Brown" Valks, before all that were really originally available (that I am aware of) were the Max/Mil/Hik/Roy versions.

I posted this on the Valkyrie-Exchange boards... I'm going to try here just in case
Everywhere I look I keep seeing that Yamato is "supposed" to be releasing a 1/60 MACII Monster... and everywhere I look they have different release dates (ranging from mid 2003?, spring 2004, blah blah blah, TBA). Seems like no one knows, including Yamato. does anyone have an update?I understand that Yamato is bad about release dates, and there might be a tooling/mold problem... just hopeing to find a little more info about it

ROTFLMAO!
so you noticed the carpet bombing F-117's too

someone at the studio needs to do a little more reasearch
Not sure why they opted to use traditional hand drawn explosions against the CG modelswell darn I should of noticed that right away, when I get home from work I'll have to watch it again. all I can say to that is ICK!

IMHO, Macross Zero had more detail, but dogfight simulation was not entirely realisticI thought the Dogfight scenes were not too bad, though I think the scenes from Macross Plus beat Mac-0 hands down

I don't know what Nightbat meant, but to me, the CGI is so glaring against the cell animation behind that instead of blending in, the differences become larger and more visible. So instead of being able to sit back and try to enjoy the show, all I see are the CGI against the cell background.
Primarily why your seeing such a contrast difference between the normal cells and the CG is the difference in color depth. Traditional (excuse me if I don't quite the correct/exact number) anime uses 16 or 32 colors, CG is only limited by the color depth of the computer generating the CG and the TV. so you have a background that is 16/32 colors with an image in the foreground with many thousands of colors. They could of lowered the image contrast a tad, maybe add a little differential transparancy to neutralize the color depth difference. But as you have said...
if they spec out a pre-release version of Mac-0 and show it to an audience who like CGI they will get Kudos, while the rest of the world may not like CGI (as much). Its all preferential and "to each his own", I think they did an excelent job.given their probable budget, time constraints, and target audience. -
Well my thing is I was not and I am not seeking out B@$#%&$'d (god forbit I mention the word bootleg) versions. I happened to see one; along with some Animated Music Vids that used Macross Plus Vid sequences... it sparked my urge to obtain Macross Plus, specifically the version of the Vids I saw in the AMV. When I say obtain, I mean buy My concern ultimately was over what my out of pocket cost was going to be to get said video. Back when I worked for a major company where paychecks were a pleasure, I would just buy them all ($60? its only money, I'll take two more, keep them unopened to add to my collection) Now that I work for a small company where paychecks are almost an embarrassment, I go $20 or $40?.... hmm please tell me its the $20 version. I don't wanna sit here and whine that the vids are so expensive, because they aren't, but having to buy three different DVDs to get the right one, when there are plenty of (what I assume, you know what happens when you assume) intelligent people. Who probably know the differences between the releases I thought I could pose the question and get a real answer, not Mod spanked. I didn't even get a PM from the Mod saying "I see your a new poster to this board... blah blah... I just want to remind you of the rules... blah blah..." nope nada whats the point of having a board if you can't pose a question. Mods should see where the post goes, or PM the person... not just go off and indiscriminately lock the thread because of what they perceive as being a bad topic.
c:\rant.exe -off
ok, I really need to get off this rant... it keeps fragmenting my harddrive
-
Well sense that board posting does kind of mention the scene I'm talking out... heck YA! "me don't kneed know Englesh, me can wreed suptittles" though I would really like to know if that specific scene is actually there. But from the sounds of how they talk about the Movie's additional sequences, in general terms, its the information I was looking for.
FYI, I still get iritated when I get hit with the Mod stick when I feel that the whole post wasn't read/understood by the mod. Having been an active poster of several gaming Boards for years I have only been mod-spanked three times (well four now) and I have yet to have a mod not appologise to me personally when they realize their paux pas

to add my 2 cents worth. IMO I personally hate CG for anime/cartoons. I am an old school fan of the first seasons of Transformers, GI Joe, and Robotech. I didn't become a Macross fan untill several years later. What did I know, I was like 12. I think CG killed the good cartoons (please excuse my verbage if I interchange Anime and Cartoon, I get defensive too when someone calls Anime a Cartoon. When I say cartoon I mean cartoon, the CG ones really blow, besides they no longer air them.
). IMO Mac-0 using a combination of CG and traditional Anime is an awesome mix. You get the facinating story building using traditional, then the high detail with amazingly intricate movement and combat sequences using the CG. I dont' think it detracts in any way from the story or the combat sequences... -
I personaly want to thank Grand Cannon for sending me a PM trying to help to answer my question from my "Mod'd" post.
-
ok someone obviously didn't understand what I was asking. I am trying to find out if the Macross Plus Movie release has the footage I'm looking for. Because I Intend to BUY it. If it does not have the footage, I Intend to BUY the two disk version in English.
-
ack! I'm blinded!!! I really need to find a good popup blocker, that's a good site but OMG I have not seen that many popups on one site in a long time.
-
woohoo! UN Spacy you ROCK! thank you so very much

I'm trying to hopefully find a website that has the complete lyrics to the many Macross songs (namely the Japanese versions). One in particular I'd love to find is the Macross Plus song "Voices" aka "Myung's Song". IMO, I classify it as an amazingly beautiful song.
-
Please excuse me if this sounds like a newb question, I have researched it and can't seem to find anything more than a generic answer:
I'm trying to narrow down which releases into the US (compatable) market for Macross Plus is the one I'm looking for. I have found two "mainstream" releases; one with a choice of Japanese or English dubbing (on two DVD sets), the other (the movie compilation, one DVD) that's in Japanese only with english subs. The little descriptions I have seen for the compilation version says it has added scenes, embelishments, etc.
Now over the last few weeks I have seen two different "bootlegs", english dubbed and sub'ed (I'm guessing from the separate disks and not the compolation). Both of which have driven me to the brink of coughing up the dough to buy one. I have also seen an AMV (Anime Music Video) featuring the song "Information High" (IMO by far the best AMV I have seen so far depicting scenes from Macross Plus). At the end of the vid it shows Guld litteraly being torn apart by the G forces trying to destroy the AI fighter. But the Bootlegs I saw did not show this footage. As much as I am drawn to buy the English dubbed version, I love "extra" footage versions (besides the compolation winds up being half the cost). IMO the extra footage paints a better picture of the story than the original release does. Does the "compolation" contain the scene(s) I mentioned? or is it some other, probably out of print (if you will), version that I will have to bend over for some Ebay seller to get it
? Also can someone vouch for the quality of the subs on the "compolation"? Admitaly I am not the fastest reader, I have seen subs on some Anime that progressed so fast that it made it near impossible to read without pausing my DVD player. Also some subs aren't translated right and read worse than old english.
1/60 NON-VALK wish-list....

I'm thinking in Tactical terms. If they had given it a gun pod like the Valks.... I would completely change my view. IMO it was an excelent CD Mech (not likely to take out a whole block of Macross City in combat) vs lets say a Monster or a Phalax.
As for close combat, all the Destroids were cannon fodder. The only mecha that actualy got a fighting chance in close combat were the battleroids. Now in close combat a Spartan vs an Unarmed Zentran(Zentreadi) warrior... ok fair enough... that would be an interestingly close match.
Now if it did come as part of the "Multi-Pack" heck ya I would still buy it... its just not on my wish list.
