  1. The dimensional barrier was neatly shrinkwrapped around the Vajra battleship's hull. You can see it when it absorbs the first shot from Battle Frontier.

Let's just say that the Pin-Point Barrier attack is unstoppable! Technically, PPB is the same energy as a dimensional barrier. Fight fire with fire, and what do you get? A whole lot of "bitchin'!"

  2. I thought the shield went down as a result of Quarter's attack, thus allowing Battle Frontier to deliver the final blow.

Otherwise Quarter's attack would've been pointless, right? Or is that what you meant and I just misunderstood?

    The latter.

I said that they mentioned that the shield was down after the Macross attack.

  3. Guld has worked hard to suppress his natural instincts and appear to be a normally-functioning person. You have to look at it this way: Guld is extremely intelligent, since he was both the pilot and one of the design engineers for the YF-21. I'm sure he was smart enough to learn how to control himself so any kinds of brain scans done while designing the BDS and BDI systems would come up with no anomalies. The very sight of Isamu triggered the neurological reaction that caused the BDS to go haywire. He's always had this condition, but he doesn't tell anyone about it.

As far as Myung's true feelings go, all you have to do is look at Sharon Apple's feelings. She says that she loves Guld.. but then says that she loves Isamu even more. Sharon's emotions are a direct copy of Myung's. What does that tell us?

  4. I do believe they did say something about a dimensional shield or rift being down when the Quarter performed its melee attack on the juggernaut Vajra ship. That's what nullified the first shot from Battle Frontier's buster cannon. Remember that the Macross Cannon uses collimated superdimensional energy. Would make sense that the Vajra have the ability to nullify that very energy, since they themselves are superdimensional life forms.

  5. Wow, I just have to say that I am really impressed at all of the effort you guys put into this event. I didn't go, but I really wish I could have. I thought I was a pretty big fan of Macross, but I don't even come close to the dedication that so many of you put forth.

...and speaking of dedication, I just want to say that I was surprised that Mari Iijima agreed to come. ...but after thinking about it, it really just tells me and everyone involved of the unflinching dedication SHE puts into supporting her fans and the fans of Macross. Every time I see a picture of her or hear a story about how someone ran into her, she's always more than willing to spend a few minutes to make a fan's dream come true. She's been doing this for over 20 years now and it looks like she still enjoys it to the fullest. Mari, you're a real professional. Thanks for everything you do!

  6. Now what I'd like to know is

it looks to me like Alto may have been infected with the V-Type virus this time, specifically when treating Sheryl's wound. The little flash into her past he got when touching her earring lends itself to this theory.

Ah! That's a good catch! I didn't consider that when I saw the movie, but I think you're onto something there!

Someone compared that scene with Sharon Apple, but the Macross Plus ep. 2 concert was leaps and bound better that the one presented here, both visually (and musically) speaking.

I compared the clockworks motif to one of the images shown during the concert opening in MacPlus Ep.2. I just thought that image was a big influence on the design of Sheryl's concert. Didn't say anything about it being on par with MacPlus. ^_^

  7. People need to quit getting so lost in the shipping wars and just appreciate the scene for what it is: dynamic.

The simple fact that Alto was so quick to protect Ranka from Sheryl (even though he misunderstood the situation) shows a strong connection between those two. I saw this and I was like "Oh sh-- dude, you done fu--ed it up now..." This version of Sheryl melds much better with Alto, too.

  8. That "someone" is Kawamori, he's been saying that since even before the release of the first movie.

Linkage, please? ^_^ Please allow me the decency of consuming the rest of my foot in style.

Now, I've heard this before from Masaki Kajishima, the creator of Tenchi Muyo. He claimed that he'd resolve the love triangle in the 3rd OVA, but he never did and really just screwed up the entire franchise for me with the nonsensical horse manure of the 3rd OVA. I was halfway through watching the episodes and literally hopped out of my chair screaming "WTF is going on?!?!"

  9. Okay, a couple more items that I remembered to mention

    Pros:

I liked some of the scenes shot from the perspective of Alto's cockpit as he's doing high performance maneuvers in combat. It was a cool point of view, AND to see him actually having to fight off some g-forces

    Cons:

Yes, I also raged when I saw Klan wearing the female Mihoshi Academy uniform. Makes absolutely no sense why they'd do that.

The mecha battles were fast-paced, but it felt like they were going TOO fast at some point. One thing that bugged the hell out of me was when Alto was trying to save Ranka from the Vajra bug and is being held in place by the bug. Michael's sniping helped out, and eventually Alto leaves the VF to grab Ranka and escape with her. He gets hit on his EX-Gear and in about .056 seconds, he slave connects to his VF and is already in the damn cockpit before I could blink twice. First of all, how is the VF not already destroyed by either the bug or the friendly fire from Michael? Second, it's bad coreography to skip those little moments to show the full motion of what's going on. I don't know... it just made me say "wtf" when I watched that scene.

    I'll post more later ^_^

  10. Okay, I guess I'll go ahead and start listing my likes and dislikes for the sake of discussion.

    Pros:

I really liked how they changed the relationships between Alto and Ranka and Alto and Sheryl. Ranka seemed much more real and desireable in the movie than in the series. Being good friends with Alto from the start really put a positive spin on their relationship together and she was much more comfortable around him, even giving him some emotional support when he was in a bit of distress. Sheryl was less of a bitch at the beginning, contrasting with her attitude in the series. She melded much better with Alto and it was easy to see how Alto was falling for her so much more quickly.

Brera was actually not being a complete dick the entire series. His new outfit was very cool. I lol'ed when he was scanning Sheryl's body for injuries and she goes "Cut that out!"

I actually loved the concerts, especially the one with the clockworks. It had a Sharon Apple feel to it, since there was one quickie scene from Plus where she was surrounded by several osscilating gears. The duality of her characters in the concert was an interesting twist, although they could have done better without the T&A in your face. I LOVE the outfit her angelic character wears. The end concert was kind of interesting. I can see why some people wouldn't like it, though.

The new Vajra bug and battleship designs were pretty cool. Fight coreography was up to par, although there were a couple of nuances that bugged me. I'll get into those in the "cons" section.

    Cons:

I am so sick of being bombarded by Alto, Ranka, and Sheryl! I very much appreciate the development of other characters while the series moves forward. Honestly, those three are kind of boring to me. I like Sheryl somewhat, but Alto and Ranka are just normal kids, imo. I want to see more Ozma/Cathy and Michael/Klan. It's too bad Nanase wasn't in the movie, cuz I'd like to see a little bit of Luca/Nanase... but I can live without it. Basically, you have a battle scene, 1 1/2 hours of Alto, Ranka, and Sheryl, and then another battle scene... poof! It's over. The other characters just pop up from time to time to throw in less than their two cents.

The recycling of SOOOO much animation really started to upset me towards the end of the movie. Both cel and CG were horrendously overused. To me, it just screams "laziness" when they can't reanimate these scenes. This movie is making billions of yen and they can't spend the time and money to reanimate them? Sure, a non-fan wouldn't care, but this movie is obviously made FOR the fans and I'll tell you why I think so.

The story was pieced together poorly because it would be impossible for someone who hasn't seen the series to know what the hell is going on. Literally, I'm watching this movie and complaining about the sequencing of the scenes. It's like they want to transition them, but for shortage of time, they just let the fans do the thinking for the movie. You get from point A to point B in an instant, not explaining how you got there, but because you've seen the series, you know what happened in between those two points. It's never actually put into the movie. Also, the story was basically the same, with some minor details changed. Overall, there was not much difference to the events of the series.

The music track at the beginning of the movie was SO Independence Day. C'mon Yoko, you're better than that.

The fanservice at various points always deducts points from my scorecard. I don't need to see suggestive images and scenes in order to be entertained. I want a good story, with good characters, and lots of action. Fanservice from characters always makes me think less of that character... and of the writers.

I'm sure I missed a few things here and there, but this is what I could think of at this time. Although I will watch the movie again when the fansubs come out, I'm probably not going to glean a whole lot more out of it then.

  11. See, you guys are purposely confusing me, aren't you?!

IIRC, wasn't it given to him by his mother?

Sounds like he's not sure if this is true or not.

Because it's a luck charm that protects him from things like bad luck and evil spirits?

So, it's just a normal omamori, then?

Yeah...a gift from his dead mother...why would anyone be attached to something like that?

Wait, so it WAS given to him by his mother? Where did that get explained?

See? Where are the straight answers! :p

  12. so i ordered the hybrid pack from amiami, and since it was on the same page as Another Century Episode R, i got that too.. and a few other things. talk about suggestive selling

so i now have a few japanese games and i don't know japanese. can anyone please direct me to a thread or another site where the controls and game mechanics are explained in english? would appreciate it much. thanks.

Yeah, once I get the spare change to buy the movie, I'd like a little bit of help too. Make with the linkage, people! ;)
