I just want to point out a big reason I love Macross... the attention to detail in combat sequences. Huge example of this is when Battle Frontier was about to take its first shot at the Vajra battleship. If you look closely as it's firing, you actually see its engines burst a moment before firing the buster cannon to absorb the recoil. I didn't notice it when I saw it the movie for the first time, due to the low resolution of the feed. However, I had to replay that several times when I saw it in 720p just to admire that kind of attention to detail. Bravo!
Also, I LOVED the sequence where Alto was being chased by 15 or so missiles and the in-cockpit perspective showed both him struggling with the g-forces from his maneuvers and the missiles twisting and winding behind him, attempting to hit their mark.

I, too, think that the fan service is getting kinda out of hand. To be honest, the movies and shows could do just fine to not have nudity in them. There's something about the gratuitous scenes that really irk me, too. As the previous poster noted, Sheryl's first concert in the movie was just too "over the top". I think it would have been much better if they found a different way to indicate the promiscuousness of her "black bunny" persona. I mean, the vampire thing and bondage and all that... that's good enough, imo.

At least Metzen did... All those other nerds don't matter to me

So, I just got done re-watching the movie with subtitles and I will have to admit that it did sway my opinion of the movie to a more positive position. I am now looking forward to the sequel, although not quite begging for it as I was the first movie.
I really do like this version of Sheryl and Ranka much better than in the show. Sheryl isn't such a huge bitch, and Ranka is 1000% less whiny and clingy. Ranka has more going for her in the "odds of winning Alto's heart" game. Sheryl is much more real, imo, and also has a strong chance of ending up as Alto's choice. Series Ranka is no match for Series Sheryl, though...
I got a 720p version of the movie and used the subtitle track that was linked on this forum, and I have to say that it looks S-E-X-Y!!! The audio track was top-notch and the picture was nice and crisp. It really did a good job of immersing me into the movie. Now, if I can just figure out a way to get the movie and subtitle track to play on the PS3... little help?

I was just giving you a bit of a hard time... taking you down a notch or two. But otherwise, I'm in your camp on the issue.

Don't forget to acquire a mastery of the English language, including spelling and proper punctuation.

Look at the suggestions on the side. The guy did several of these kinds of vids. I liked The Reverend more than the others.

That's pretty close, but the front gear is just a tad bit in front of where it shows on that fan drawing. You can catch its position in Ep 2 during the testing montage when Isamu is taxiing in front of the YF-21's hangar.

I think you're starting to stretch the evidence to fit other theories. Let's just follow Occam's razor here and say that she was "assaulted", but not raped. This is based on what we've seen and is the most obvious explanation of what happened.
-
Ha ha...! That's great! I couldn't stop laughing at Max... "He did it! The son of a bitch did it!"
-
Towards the end of episode 1 when Guld loses control of his YF-21, he flashes back some images where Isamu is comforting Myung. She's concealing herself and you can see the tatters of her clothes hanging off of her body, with everything in the room overturned. Isamu knew right then and there. He might have been unable to protect Myung at first, but he was there when Guld was realizing what he had done.

Perhaps it would be in order to offer some kind of tutorial on how to do these color schemes. I goofed around with GiMP to create my own color scheme. While the overall look got the point across, it looked like crap in detail. I am guessing you guys somehow overlay the outline on top of the colors, or something? When I used the paint bucket to fill in the areas, the outline was still carrying the shades of grey from when it was black and white only. I want to get it to blend the greys with the color next to it.

This showed up on my recommended Youtube videos when I recently logged onto YT.

It's nice. Not as good as the original, but a good cover nonetheless.

Starship Troopers style?
-
Uh yeah, in the movie. You're right about that.
-
It fails there too - they couldn't even get real soviet aircraft for the enemy aircraft - and as I mentioned before they re-used the ONLY impressive shot twice in the same movie.
You want a movie with good flying sequences using real aircraft there are two choices.
1 - Hell's Angels by Howard Hughes, dated script and acting but the aerial shots are excellent.
2 - The Blue Max. Much better version of the entire Top Gun theme of the little guy proving himself and getting the girl.
I guess if you like to watch propeller planes putter around in the air firing their machine guns at each other, then you're entitled to your own opinion. I'd much rather watch a few planes dogfighting at intra-sonic speeds blowing each other to smithereens with sidewinder missiles and vulcan cannons. There could have been more gun kills, I will admit. "An elegant weapon for a more civilized age."
I have already said why multiple times. But one last time. [EDIT] - forgot to mention, a difference of opinion is not a refutation.
The Script stinks, the plot and characters are shallow and unrealistic (with the exception of Goose), the aerial combat is not as good as everyone who likes the film says (I've seen much better in the two other films I mentioned), the character conflict is forced and childish "I don't like you, your dangerous", "Yeah that's right I'm dangerous" - how can people stand to listen to dreck like that?
For me personally it is a Tom Cruise competition movie (along with that racing movie and the bartender movie) and I despise them for being moronic at best, a total insult to humanity at worst. (Give Tom a good script, like Born on the Fourth of July, or Valkyrie and you have something, the competition movies are just an excuse for mindless stunts (or mindless cocktail glass acrobatics)
One last edit - Roger Ebert sums up this movie best, and what he says about the character interaction is the #1 reason why this movie is a dog. For my part, I don't agree with him about the arial portion being great, it was good but not great.

I refuted your previous reasons because they were dumb. "They couldn't even get soviet aircraft for the enemy aircraft". You expected them to do so in 1985? All I hear from you about this movie is nothing but negativity and you sit there looking for every possible way to put it down.
How are the characters shallow and unrealistic? The aerial combat was flown by real fighter pilots. How could it not be up to par to you? Oh wait, that's right. You'd rather watch propeller planes in old movies so you can seem more worldly and not-in-the-norm than your averaged slack-jawed yokel.
-
I just want to know why you hate the movie. Don't just come up here and say it sucks and not have a good reason. I've already refuted your past reasons.
On a related note, IF (and that's a big "if") they do make a sequel, I'd love to see some naval fleet action. Nothing like those 16-inch guns firing a full-broadside on an enemy target. The air filled with AA fire is a sight to behold.
-
My point is that some of you guys are "armchair quarterbacking" the movie from the year 2010. In 1985, they didn't have the means to do what they can today.
If you could have written the script, then how would YOU have done it?
If you get rid of the MiGs, who the heck would you fight against that would actually make it believable to the audience? At the time, the Cold War was running strong. Although they never actually confirm the MiG pilots to be Soviet, you can still kind of assume that it's some Soviet-backed faction. You also don't realize that it would take a lot for the US to launch a nuclear missile against another country. Oh noes... one of our carriers had to illegally enter foreign waters to save a disabled ship. How dare the opposing faction try to defend their territory with hostile actions! Quick! Let's justify an attack on a carrier full of military personnel by launching a nuclear missile against a city full of 3 million civilians! The story was written to make it as believable as it could be at the time. What would you have done differently?
-
Okay, a question for all you haters out there... If Top Gun sucked so badly, how would YOU have achieved production of the movie?
Let's start with this: I'd like to know how you would go about getting your hands on real MiG fighters if you're a Hollywood production company in the 1980's.

I can totally understand the complaints about the beginning of episode 5. When I first saw it, I started going back to episode 4 and checking to see if I actually missed a portion of the story. I don't know... perhaps they felt they were up against a time restriction. Oh well...
I want to point out that when you see Sara inside of the Birdman, she's got those organic tendrils wrapped around her body and attached to various points of her skin. You see the same kind of tendrils in DYRL when Exedol is both displaying the images from the miclone ship, and when he is translating to the captured miclones. Yet another little PC design detail that's survived for eons.

I LOVE Zero, and quite frankly, I find it hard to believe that people just can't follow the story. As Azrael noted, you just have to learn to gain perspective on how advanced the Protoculture were. I didn't have any qualms about the series, except that the ending was a tiny bit ambiguous. We can assume that Sara commanded the Birdman to fold out of the atmosphere, but how did Shin do the same? Was it her power, or did he have it within him as Mao suggested? Aside from that, the mecha battles were sexy as hell and the characters were well-written.
I disliked 7, simply because I felt like I was watching the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. The series was obviously geared towards a much younger audience than before and there were so many things about that series that just rubbed my fur the wrong way. If you didn't like Zero, be prepared for a tough viewing of 7. Although, imo, Zero was 956070834x better than 7.

Just because they used MiGs in Top Gun, doesn't mean that they were fighting against some part of the Soviet Bloc. They could just make up a plane and call it, say... SV-51 and have them fight against F-14s and... oh wait, that's been done already.
-
Yeah, but just losing navigation wouldn't cause the engines and hydraulics (if they still use em in MacF) to go out. Something was disrupting the computer system, most likely.

David, does that have the subs integrated, or are they still a separate file?
