Question on origins of both TV and Movie SDF-1
Was it ever explained why there are two different versions of the ship.
-
Sadly, I think you're right in some respects. I used to be all "wtf" with price tags over $100, then I started collecting the 1/48s when they came out which were around $120 at the time for me (back when the exchange rate used to be pretty awesome). Then prices slowly climbed up to the $200 range for things like the original release of the 1/60 YF-21 and SV-51. Now I'm paying almost $400 for a frickin toy... A TOY. I need to get my head checked. I tell myself that this will be the one and only toy I will ever buy at this price since this is the titular ship of the Macross franchise and granddaddy of all that came after it (TV series version notwithstanding but basically supposed to be the same ship). But then I think what if Bandai came out with a same scale NMC Frontier or Galaxy (sans city)? Ok $300 for that probably... but no more than that!
no need to fret. Lots of people on your side of the Camp. I Paid 400 for the SOC Aquarion because of the complexity and metal. But Now throwing HARD earned 400 bucks on a toy i cant justify unless you really have that kind of disposable income. Last year I threw 300 on the PG 00 Raiser. Not worth it. 250 is the absolute max for a single toy for me. This SDF-1 one is a beautiful Toy no doubt, but it may be in our collections yet. HLJ has a new Macross Sale and the SOC Quarter is now 50% off! We could see this ship reduced in some crazy sale. And im happy with my Wave. For those of you that hate your wave now that you have your Yammy please, feel free to ship to me I will gladly take your ugly SDF off your hands

got my package before xmas but to my surprise i still have to pay an extra $19 from Fedex.....theres goes the 50% discount.....

Wave's mold is horribly inacccurate.
well as horribly inaccurate as it is I like that it doesnt have that massive gap. Just looks like its a robot sleeping.
Graham
I would love a completely TV Lineart Accurate version. Not just a TV colored version of the Movie SDF-1 one. Yes you can add new arms but a lot of the TV version is pretty different as shown with the pics above

Sigh....
In the Astro Plan thread I said that the original thing Chinese know how to do... is to deny
"Officials at Floraland theme park denied the statue's existence on Monday. This goes against earlier claims that the statue was an original design - despite the prominent "EFSF" and "WB" logos on its shoulders (standing for "Earth Federation Space Force" and "White Base," respectively). Of course, it also goes against all photographic evidence, but who's counting?"
Need I say more.
TO keep the thread from derailing I got the MG and PG Red Frame from Astray for Christmas
Family Guy or American Dad should do a skit. Peter and Louis are visiting China and see the Gundam statue and say hey its the gundam statue then there is a party member guarding the statue that responds no its not. Peter shows his gundam model, Party members response No its not. Peter here look I have the original DVD see its a gundam, Party member; no its not. The peter punches him in the face and turns to louis run~!

If you're serious...
Like I said UC purists will hate. Haters will hate. You HAVE your share of UC goodness this year, TWO episodes of Unicorn, a PS3 game with new story, sidestory mangas, and plenty more UC stuff.
Can you SENILE OLD MEN gave us young uns to have flashy mecha shows with pink beams and bishonen once in a while? JUST ONCE IN A WHILE?
And "rich historical genre" my ass.
If you just trolling...
heheh, good one.
haha trolling yeah. I give my opinion on a truly horribly atrocious story. I think I would like Astro Plan more.....UC? I barely know anything about the series. I had to watch zeta and post questions on another board to understand. I just got into UC late last year. Saw MS08th Team in Dec 09 and Star Dust Memory around June '10. I have big fuzzy feeling for Wing which was the first Gundam show I ever saw straight out of university. And I really liked the First Season of 00. Second season was so so. Some nice heart breaking episodes in season 2 but the movie, I could not connect with any of the characters, the gundam battles, well how could you tell what was going on when everything was a blur. The enemy was weak, plot holes galore. Just because you may be a fan doesn't mean everything spit out is to be treated with enthusiasm. This could have really been something. The macross movie was really enjoyable and made sense. This was a story done in a bathroom on a role of toilet paper. But hey if you like it good for you. I guess with age you just develop better tastes.

I'm just going to come right out and say it... I find this to be quite underwhelming.
All of the fine detail, construction and complexity are impressive; but it looks so incredibly bland as a whole. There's just so much bare plastic (and I really dislike the plastic finish Macross toys from Yamato have), it doesn't feel like a $300+ TOY; it feels like it's a nicely detailed model that they didn't bother to paint.
I think the problem is that my personal tastes in toys don't quite line up with the products Yamato chooses to make more than anything else. To me surface finish and painted detail is worth more than all the fine sculpted detail and complex engineering in the world. Even though they're not nearly as detailed as the Yamato figure, I actually prefer the WAVE SDF-1 or the Macross Quarter, as I find the paint and glossy plastic to be far more visually impressive when viewed from any reasonable distance.
Perhaps I'm the only person who feels this way, but the 1/3000 SDF-1 would really have been more appealing if it was released as an unpainted, unassembled kit for about $150~$200. The actual parts that make it up definitely look like they're worth that much, but I don't see an extra $100~$150 in the paint and final assembly.
I feel the same way too. But! BUT! This toy could have had the nice paint apps that could wow us. Look at the love the Yamato 1/24 Patlabor got. Detail. Gimmicks. And one beautiful paint app. Now when it first came out it also went for around $400 CDN but I waited, waited some more, was about to buy the blue one and then I found a new one on ebay for less than 200 bucks. Like someone already said, Yamato may come out with a weathering version. If that is the case this one may drop in price. Me personally I hope sales go well for Yamato. I would really like to see the TV version
Actually, judging by your Gunpla pics your pretty good with an airbrush, you could make this SDF look so nice.

Nice Review
It does look nice. But it really needs more paint apps. The grey plain plastic look...sigh,so much potential to spruce it up with paint. It might help to take a gundam marker to highlight all the panel lining. And Macross city could use a painters touch as well.
One thing. On my wave the feet tilt, does the feet tilt on this toy?
"Will Yamato release a 1:3000 scale TV version SDF-1 Macross next? Well, they are still undecided and a large part of that decision may well depend on how well this DYRL version sells. To release a 100% accurate TV version would require almost all new tooling, which is a very expensive proposition. So if the DYRL version sells very well (and preorder indications are very positive), we could possibly get a TV version sometime in the future."
I hope it does sell well so we can get a TV version
Looking at your picture here really makes me want a TV version. And the rating seems suitable..even with the paint apps missing. The transformation seems solid!G-man is it possible to bring the ARMD ships closer to the legs to take away that gap that the WAVE Version doesnt have?

I could look forward to this if done right.
I have a book of HL GIGERs collection of sketches and art and his stuff is amazing in its blending of erotic horror. One thing to note is that he was so disgusted after the 2nd movie at how they turned his aliens into gushy fleshy slimy abominations I think he vowed never to work on creature designs on any alien movie. IIRC S. Weaver was really unhappy with the direction of the 3 and 4th film as well.
If they do prequel they need to bring back Giger as creature designer. His designs were a larger contributor to the movies success and it will be fitting to bring him back

Just watched Gundam OO movie (DVD released yesterday). It's good and entertaining. UC purists may hate it or complain about something; they always do to every non-UC product anyway.I feel bad saying this on a Macross forum, but I enjoyed it more than The False Diva. Pacing is the key, I think.
I just watched this horror story

WOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRSSSSSST gundam movie eva!~PEW PEW. Really Bandai take a que from Bay. Just because he likes collagen chics and splosians it doesnt mean you can mix it in with a rich historical genre that has evolved over time. Throwing in laser beams of PINK hell and watching gundams at the spead of supersonic light doesn't make me say woooooooooow. Also the Alien enemy doesn't need to be shards of crystal needle threads pew pew. PEw...
I loved MS08th Team, Stardust Memory and even the annotated Zeta Movies. Even the Unicorn has a very nice progressive story. Wing wasn't UC but the movie kicked ass! THIS SUCKED ALL THE WAY TO STAR DRIVER pew pew PEW GUNDAMOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Nice RG
I just finished my Zaku. Need to finish the decaling on my RX-78. These RG are really great.

One thing working in your favor to wait is that the 1/3000 SDF-1 is a relatively high priced item. The higher priced items tend to hang around longer than something that is more moderate in price. However, it is something that a lot of people have been hoping and waiting for, so you never know. Then again, some people may prefer a TV version, so they may decide to wait and not decide to buy the DRYL version. It also depends on how many Yamato actually produced. My gut tells me that it may be worth while to wait and see if there is any kind of sale.
I was planning on getting the 1/3000 SDF-1 as I had it on pre-order. But, then I saw the Macross Quarter go on sale for 50% off and 50% off shipping. It was too good of a deal to pass up as it was something I had wanted since it first came out. On the one hand I'm glad I got it on sale because I see that the sale is over and it's back up to regular pricing. On the other hand I don't have enough money in the budget to get the 1/3000 SDF-1. I'm gambling that it will be available at the time I save up enough money again.
That pissed me off immensely. Thats why when I saw the Yammy SDF 1 I decided by the pics and comparison to the Quarter IM going to pass unless I see it on discount. I really like my WAVE Version and I think Bandai will followup with their own SOC version of the SDF. Now if it was the TV version Im all in!
Yes the Gooobermant sucks but its also the box and carrier that tips them off. HLJ response to me was very Very positive and they said they are playing with the idea of giving buyers the option to chose marked/unmarked boxes
Either way I have promised my wife and my dad that this year I was going to take a break from collecting. I still have some pre-orders due at HLJ and BBTS but after I get the PG Strike thats it for a 1 year. I am going to go back to school and concentrate on starting my business and webpage. Time to grow up in some sense
-
Not me
I hope these are only spare parts for custom applications...Paying $300+ and dealing with sprues... only in Gundam Universe!
IM going to Pass on this. Unless I see it on discount. Looking at these early pics I cant justify the price point at the size of the Quarter. I am very content with my Wave. Now if they make a TV version . SHaaaaBANG!

Max's VF-22S is great and all but it's hardly QC free.
According to AmiAmi I'm not the only one that's had issues.
God Bless MW
Without it I'd be a fool

Guess this makes me the fourth M-worlder to have seen it. I dunno, maybe I'm just jaded but the story seemed bland and uninteresting to me. It didn't help that the lead actor was so dull and lacking in emotion. One minute he's "here," the next minute "there" and with all of "this" going on, but the events of the story don't seem to faze him at all. I can only guess the Steven Segal school of non-acting is his alma mater. I almost wished that Shia LeBouf had been about to give the characters a shot of excitement with his trademark sputtering and over-acting. I would say that the Zeus character stole the entire movie, as every other actor was so wooden it was like watching a broadway play called "All about Hayden Christensen."
In regards to the story, well, there's alot of...talking...about the digital frontier and a revolutionizing of the human experience, but it just seemed pointless and again uninteresting. All of that talking also containted some of the lamest diaologue I've ever heard. "Bio-digital jazz, man!" The Tron universe and hence the story just didn't grab my attention and get me to care. I guess part of the problem is that Tron is a story from like, 30 years ago. Back then, we could only dream of what the "digitial frontier" could do for us, but in the year 2010, we're living it, we don't need to fantasize about it. What we're given is a dry, talky experience that just doesn't have any style outside of the glowing blue, yellow and red suits...
Anyway, what format did you guys see it in? Imax 3D? There's this new 'tech they're calling "RealD 3d." Wasn't sure if this was a just a local name for this new format. I'm not sure I understand the difference between Imax 3D and RealD 3D; all I know is that I have a goddamn headache that I never experienced in Imax...
I cant believe how many people fell for the hype of 3d. That poo just makes me dizzy and ill. Tried to view the new 3d tv and I had to take the glasses after 3 min watching some demo football game. My wife lasted 30 seconds. My kid lasted 1. Its just a tool to stop pirating and pass the headache on to the consumer.

Well I got a positive response from HLJ. It seems I am not the only one getting dinged because of the logos on their box. They are now considering either getting rid of the logo which is an unnecessary cost. Marketing should not be a factor in logistics. The Online image should be tho. Or they will give the buyer the option. In all in all the fact they considered the customers concerns still rates a 5/5 with me in terms of online retailers.
-
I know they do try hard but today after the FEDEX guy got into an argument with me I had to write to HLJ;
I know its not your fault and you will plead the 5th but Shipping is as much about service as the product you sell. And since your an online entity you depend more on word of mouth for your business so when word of mouth spreads over the collectors boards that will hurt your bottom line. My rant here is about shipping. I have asked numerous times about your boxes not to have the dam logo. I really could care less about a stupid logo on my box because all it will end up is in a landfill. Normally any purchase from an ebay vendor does not get charged customs fees and here in Canada its rather arbitrary to the point of it being sometimes 50% of the price of the product!!! I believe the LOGO is what tips off customs to go crazy. Now I dont know if you know but in Ontario Canada, we have taxes on top of taxes with a sprinkle of some more taxes. Now you gave me a discount on fedex shipping. And something I have learned a long time ago when I started importing collectibles is to never, NEVER use UPS or Fedex because 100% of the time even if the item is less than the $60 allowance, I get dinged! So today I paid 20 bucks for a 50 dollar item. With our GST/HST/PST it should be only $6bucks tax. So you do the math and you can see that at almost 50% tax rate is sheer bullshit. Again I know you will plead the 5th. But I know you strive to improve your business by improving customer satisfaction. I hope you use this as an informational tool in your promotions. I had made the mistake of being fooled with the $8 shipping discount with Fedex. I wont make that mistake again and will only, ONLY use EMS. I know you do your best but there is always room for improvement I hope you continue to pursue making your business the best it can be...
FYI
The GOVofCAN has not allowed UPS to compete with Canada Post as an alternative logistics Carrier.
Here is one comment in regards to this
"i know i hate UPS, whenever i get stuff sent to me with them i always get larger fees than other courier's I personaly use Canada Post/purolator"
Trust me the Same can be said for Fedfex!

for those of you who hate the TF3 Megatron figure. You will appreciate the figure much more after you see the TF3 optimus prime figure which makes one want to vomit large junks of their organs. If this is a movie representation my anticipation that Bay will redeem himself after the colossal failure of the last 2 is out the window. F&%k y^$ bay and hasbro for allowing sh%$ like this.....
I dont feel like even playing with draw to remove the watermark
Just google Transformers: Dark of the Moon Optimus Prime figure and you will see what I mean

Hollywood bought the right to remake internal affairs, it was hardly stolen.
And good luck suing anyone in china for IP theft. In general, the Chinese government doesn't really cooperate with foreign states or nationals when it comes to suing or prosecuting their citizens.
I didnt know that. I did read that when the movie came out there was talk about theft and Martin Scorsese made a comment it wasn't copied. But if that is the case it just proves my point that the international Copy Right industry must pursue violators of original licensing content etc in china .

AWESOME NEW VIDEO GAME

meh
I'll star in it for the price of 2 1/3000 SDF's or they can just yamato me two of them

Have any of the companies in Japan tried suing the creators of this show. I sure would like to see so. I mean besides stealing jobs and superficially becoming a world power they should not be allowed with copying EVERYTHING when people are being put in jail for pirating movies, (NOT STEALING THE IDEA MERELY COPYING). It seems to be a two faced policy by the international community.
There are legal discussions by the Japanese to sue the chinese for the brown and orange gundam they built??? Why not Astro Plan
In Toy Wars a book about Mattel and Hasbro the two ended up in court over the similarities of bust size from the Barbi and Cindy line. Astro plan is really a blatant ripoff. But I can call it both ways too. Hollywood ripped off an AWESOME HK show called Mugando and got praises for the Departed. To me Mugando was WAY BETTER than the Departed and yet Hollywood let them get away with it. So i guess until there is fairness who gives a Sh&$
