  1. What about Fundamentalist Macrossism, worshiping only the original sacred text of Super Dimension Fortress Macross?

Do not trust Do You Remember Love?! It is a tool of the devil, a corrupted version of the holy word of SDF:M designed to tempt you away with it's flashy lights and fancy animation. The true path to salvation lies only in the original 36 episode scripture!

We, at the church of Viper-ism, don't subscribe to that uholy view of things. While you may view DYRL as a hedonistic pile of apocrypha, we in the church of Viper-ism freely acknowledge it's existance, and rejoice in this most holy of presentations, as it affords us a view of the Mighty Destroid Tomahawk, firing it's guns!

While it is true that the church of Viper-ism presnts a unified front for the greater glory of Frontier, we do like to acknowledge what has come before, in paving the way for our holiest of holies, the divine tale of Alto, Sheryl, and Ranka.

Blessed be the word of Kawamori!

    :p

  2. This thing looks like a throw-back to the bad ol' days of the 'Wing Commander' game series, specifically 'Wing Commander: Prophecy" and it's signature fighter, the 'Vampire'... I dunno... I'm not sold on the design at all. It seems that they've taken a good design (VF-25) and screwed it up.

It just seems like someone went a hell of a long way to replicate DYRL's 'Strike Valkyrie' in Frontier... but that's just me.

  3. Thanx Robelwell202.

Just checked out info on "08th MS Team",looks like my kind of thing, and ordered the ova complete collection, love the look of the mecha and the fact that it,s earth bound CAN,T WAIT!!! love those old skool chunky mecha!.

    Glad I could help.

I'm a relative NOOB when it comes to Gundam. I was refered to 08th MS Team by a couple people who shall remain nameless (Seto and Talos), because I like Destroid Tomahawks, and these folks said "Hey, you wanna see some damn good ground-combat anime? Watch this!'

I was hooked by the second Ep. :D

  4. Story Time, folks...

A long time ago (Roughly a year and some change), in a galaxy far, far away (Northwest Washington State, in the seattle area, to be precise), there lived a fan of Robotech. He'd seen it as a child, and thought moderately good things about it, although not nearly as fanatical as some people have.

This man, called Robelwell202, had a particular appreciation for a mighty destroid, the Tomahawk, and he'd had it since childhood, when he saw it on a flier inside a 'Robotech Defenders' model kit some 25 years ago.

Our hero, Robelwell202, had thought about the idea of driving one of these mighty robotic machines. He did so over the span of these 25 years. Sometimes, he'd think heavily, and then there would be some times that he wouldn't think about it at all. After all, big robots with guns? That's silly.

Some time ago, oour hero got the idea to write a story about these big war machines. Being as Robelwell202 was, for a time, a long-haul over-the-road trucker, he had lots of time to think, and no female companionship to distract him. He began working details for this story out, and yes, he spent many an hour, and many a mile thinking.

Now comes the time when Robelwell202 discovers 'Internet Forums', and the lively and honest (HAH!) discussions therein. He finds a site, Robotech.com, and starts asking questions. Some of his questions are laughed at, since it's obvious that no one cares about destroids, and he was obviously a defective person. However, some of his questions do get answers, and Robelwell202 is well on his way to beginning his litterary epic!

Not long ago, Robelwell202 had become something of a wierd figure amongst all these Internet Forums. His story had become something of a small milestone in the phenomena known as RT-Fandom, and there were even a few people that liked it. Still, our hero Robelwell202 had developed certain friendships over the time he spent on this new-fangled thing called the internet.

His firends had opened a doorway, a portal to a magical place called 'Macross'. Robelwell202 was stunnned! Robelwell202 was amazed! Here was everything he'd ever hoped for in a big-robot anime, without the bullshit content that Robotech contained. Robelwell202 began soaking up as much of this thing called 'Macross' as he could, lest it go out of style tomorrow.

But, in all his exploration, Robelwell had not partaken of the original series, a holy thing that was known to priests and peasants alike as 'SDF:Macross', for Robelwell202 had said that he'd seen the Robotech version enough times.

Then, the holy cult leader SetoKaiba came down from on high (Actually, through MSN-Messenger) and said "Verily, thou art ignorant in the art of Macross. To be a true follower of mine, thou must divest your ignorant ways, and partake of SDF:Macross. Yea, it is a 'cut above' that tripe you have seen before. This series actually makes sense!"

Robelwell202 was skeptical, though. He'd been dazzled and amazed by Macross Frontier, he'd been totally confused and migraned by Macross 7, and yes, he'd reached the holy high-place of DYRL, but... how different could SDF:MAcross be from Robotech's Macross Saga?

SetoKaiba looked down on the lowly, ignorant fool, and said "Verily, for if thou does not artake of SDF:Macross, I shall kick thy ass all over the place! (Not really folks, I'm rolling the dramatic effects for all I can get.) Watch it!"

So, reluctantly, Robelwell202 began watching SDF:Macross, and a holy light bloomed in his head. "Holy crap!" Robelwell202 said. "This DOES make sense!"

    Story time's over.

  5. Actually, I think we've got a schism brewing...the Setoites versus the Petians.

Seto promises booze, Macross II, and rigorous fact-checking. Pete promises booze, Macross 7, and panties.

The choice should be clear. ^_^

I'm throwing my hat in for a third option

"Viper-ites" Promising casual fact-checking ("I dunno, I just like the show...), Macross Frontier, and beer!

    There, now we have three!

  6. (Although I probably shouldn't say that, since Bendo's newest line of attack is that only "Macross Groupies" like JT. )

This is quite hillarious, as JT's explained that he's never seen Macross, except for DYRL...

But would Robotech.com tolerate Doug's threats? absolutely not

which is why I hate to say it but RTX has become worse.

Are you kidding? WDKaiserV1's sig line is as bad as it gets! 'Death to Macross Purists!'

  7. I sometimes wonder whether it's stupidity, or just a case of old habits dying hard. It's really not easy to admit that not just every FACT you have in your head about something is actually not a fact, but a lie, but it's even harder to get rid of latent correlations and tendencies to recall certain things in a certain way...even if you know it's incorrect.

I remember when I first came to Macross World, there was a period of maybe a month where, whenever I would write about Misa Hayase, I kept writing "Misa Hayes." And people would keep saying "HAYASE!" - and I knew it was wrong...but it was just a matter of something being so deeply ingrained that one had to force onself to change the habit.

Whenever I read what Robotech folks have to say - it is clear to me that they are ignorant not just about Robotech, but about Macross and anime especially - and they are not even AWARE of their ignorance.

Me - I know I'm ignorant. I know there's a ton of stuff I haven't watched, a ton of stuff I haven't read, a ton of references I don't get. It's important to know this and be able to ask questions.

But RT fans generally tend not to do this. They literally don't want to take off the blinders RT and HG have put on them for so long and look around at Macross and Japanese anime.... even though they keep saying that Robotech was an attempt to bring the "wonderful" world of anime to America --- they then turn around and don't care for that world at all.

    Pete

    Quite the double-standard, eh?

I'm in the same boat as you, really. I'm not very well versed in anime, with the fact that I've only been learning about the expansive Macross universe over the last year. Add to that, some very kind people (Thank you, Seto and Talos) have been expanding my horizons with selected Gundam titles, as well as other stuff. It's a 'whole new world' kind of thing.

Some things were extremely difficult to get my head around, at first, seeing as I was exposed to Robotech at first. For example, it was somewhat difficult to get my head around the idea that Protoculture was NOT a super-energy plant, but a long-dead race. For antoher thing, I rejoyced when I had heardd that it was called a Destroid Tomahawk, and not 'Excalibur Mk.4' (As Paladium's game showed it to be).

Now, in my budding enlightened state, I'm finding myself less and less drawn to RT, out of sheer disgust. Not only is Harmony Gold's half-assed efforts left me doing little more than laughing at them, but the derisive nature of the fans, coupled with thier willing gullibility and outright hatred of Macross' continued success has left such a foul taste in my mouth that I no longer look to interact with them very much.

I still have a fnondness for RT. Like many, many others, it was my exposure to Anime. Unlike a lot of folks, though, I recognise what it is, and that's it: A conglomeration of three seperate shows, strung together to make it possible for syndication in the US. Nothing more. I don't see it as a franchise to rival the likes of Star Wars, Star Trek, or even Bayformers (I must be honest, I liked the first movie). It's a little-known, seldom remembered legacy cartoon from the '80s, and the only time someone other than a hardcore fan even remembers it is when they go into thier parents' attick and dig around thier old toy boxes. They may find a Matchbox toy or two, and think about that hoaky ol' cartoon they watched early on Saturday mornings, with the volume low, so that they wouldn't wake thier parents up.

No, like I said, I have a small, special place in my heart for RT, and for that, I'll finish my little novel. Other than that, though, I've become burned out. In the case of some fans, I've become more than burned out. I've become disgusted.

  8. I might suggest '08th MS Team', as well. A damn good series, and the one that got me hooked on Gundam UC.

I'm working on a few different series, right now...

    0080 War in the Pocket

    0083 Stardust Memory

    and...

    Irresponsible Captain Tylor

So far, 0080 has left me wanting more, but 0083 hasn't disapointed, yet.

ICT is... well, it's better than I had expected. Funnier than hell, too!

  9. Ugh, am I the only one that hates the Macross Cannon design? It's like poster boy for the lazyass rehashed mecha design and recycled storytelling on that show.

To me, the Macross Cannon was a pretty good design. My only issue with it is this: I wish they'd've done it with purpose-built gun booms, as opposed to cheaping out (This is simply how it looks to me) and slapping a quartet of Zent ships on it.

But hey, I'm wierd, anyway. Just ask Seto. He tells me all the time that I'm wierd. :p:lol:

  10. It's kind of funny how that article critisizes DYRL solely based on the horrible acting in the Clash of the Bionoids dub.

I'm also curious, has anyone actually come out and call Doug Bendo illiterate on any of his podcasts?

I did. He blew it off, as usual, but as soon as I did, we both (That is, Seto and I) layed into him about not reading the subs on his version of MacF, therefore disqualifying him for offering anything like a real opinion of the thing.

  11. I might be the catalyst that started the whole 'Ranka is naked in outer space' deal...

See, in response to a rather idiotic post made on RTX (It was either Bendo or 'Ghost Maker'/PTH) about how well done the animation in RT:TSC was, I posted YouTube links for two AMVs, one showing space-combat footage from RT:TSC, and the other showing combat from MacF. I even went so far as to suggest that the viewers turn thier volume down, and just look at the offered video. I'll post links for those who are interested.

    RT:TSC

    Macross Frontier

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLBbKF4PMuA

Now, when these links were posted, Doug went off, starting the idiotic argument about MacF's 'naked child in outer space' content. The rest, as they say, is history.

There's one fact that I find completely hillarious. When Seto Kaiba and I went on his show the last time, I threw an amazingly obvious fact in Doug's face. He never read the subs for whatever version of MacF he watched. Apparently, he's so amazingly amazing that he can discern the entire meaning and content of a Japanese show in RAW form! He doesn't need a fluency in Japanese, and he doesn't need to read the subtitles!

For myself, I prefer to think that he's so functionally illiterate that he CAN'T read the subs. It's the same reason he uses MS-Sam to read the posts that Seto and I throw up on RTX. There's just too many multi-sylabic words there for him to understand.

Of course, I am just a Seto Kaiba yes-man, and Seto's the Macross Syndicate ring-leader. How could we stand up in the face of the #1 RT fan, and the #1 RT authority?

Most of the time, I find the ridiculous nature of Bendo to be laughable and entertaining, but there are times where I get tired of him. After all, there's only so much Bendo-ism I can take before I start getting a headache.

  12. I think it would be interesting to note that Myung didn't sing for most of Plus, because of professional pressures, as well as a lack of other things. A rather ingenius factor in that story, if I may say so. Not ony do we get the standard singing part of Macross, but we also see what can happen to somoene who's lost the love of thier art.

  13. My last two girlfriends would regularly attribute their bad moods to PMS. I'd cheer them up by saying:

"Nonesense sweetheart. I don't detect any change in your mood at all."

At first they thought I was being nice, but after actually thinking about what I said, they'd get really sore :)

Which brings me to .... women are super strong not only because they put up with PMS, childbirth and Robotech - but because they put up with guys too!

    :)

    Pete

If I didn't know you any better, I'd accuse you of being a kiss-ass!

Unfortunately, you're right. There's no arguing the logc of the statements.

    But... You're still a kiss-ass!

    :p

  14. Sounds like the movie could be very successful regardless of quality, if the new viewers are ignorant about Robotech and old fans are very selective/defensive about what they remember about it but willing to accept anything.

But you can apply that to almost anything that comes out these days. There's nothing inherently wrong with that to a certain degree. It's just hard to take things like Robotech as seriously the more you know about it.

Are you saying that we've sabotaged our enjoyment of the RT:LAM becuse... we're... too damn smart? That we've actually seen what's happened with the franchise?

Damn... That's... that's just.. sad... and hillarious!

  15. As I said, with good marketing, even crap will sell.

Case in point: Macross 7

In all seriousness, I have to agree with HappyPenguins on this point.

The American film industry (Hollywood) has, over the last few decades, lost the luster and grandeur it had in it's golden age. It's reached a low point, with every producer scouring the countryside looking for the next hot Comic Book title or some lost, obscure '80s cartoon. It also seems to have a difficult time learning the lessons from times past: Anime doesn't do well in a LAM setting.

Admittedly, there are a few small gems that come out of Hollywood, but for the most part... Meh... There's no originality at all.
