DYRL BD Remaster – the Good…….and the BAD.

So I just got back from the first ever screening of the new BD remaster of DYRL with Save. After 7 hrs straight at the cinema, its now 7:30 in the morning and I’m just about ready to crash. Before succumbing to sleep however, I have a few observations to make about the remaster – some of which may be a little surprising.

First of all – the GOOD stuff. The new 5.1 remix is utterly amazing. At times it made the movie feel like an entirely new experience, although one’s enjoyment of it will depend on the sound setup being used. In a cinema though it was the true highlight of this version.

Picture quality is extremely detailed and clear – but not all the time. Darker scenes have obvious grain present, and strangely while one scene might look like it was animated only yesterday, others look almost out of focus. I’m not sure whether this was due to some scenes cleaning up better than others, projector issues, or some insurmountable issue with the remastering process, however on a few occasions it was really noticeable and quite jarring. Those scenes that are clear are undoubtedly the best that the film has ever looked.

The ending/staff roll does not feature the Flashback 2012 footage, its the original cut.

And speaking of cuts…

The BAD stuff – Someone has decided to edit the remaster. I have no idea why, but the edits are there. Save and I picked 2 with a possible 3rd to be confirmed. These don’t effect the film at all and are related to scenes with extreme violence. When Myria stomps on a Zentradis head in her Queadlunn Rau, the head is blurred a little as her foot comes down on it to cover the gore. Later on, the infamous guy who loses his head – the head part is gone entirely. The screen whites out and this is very noticeable.

Now, this may just be an edit they did for the limited cinema screening but I doubt that Bandai would have gone to all the effort of making edits for what is essentially a promotional event. All we can do is wait until the end of the month and see, but if the version shown tonight was the final one then it might not be the ultimate version that everyone was hoping for.

Further screenshots have been released of the upcoming Bndena Mobage smartphone game. The games website now also allows pre-registration for this free-to-play title. Pre-registering apparently nets the user some free item(s) for use in the game.

Experten 1/100 VF-5000G for 2012 Summer Wonderfest

Scooped by our very own moderator David Hingtgen is this CG mock up of what is suppose to be a 1/100 scale VF-5000G Star Mirage. Wonderfest is about a month away (July 29) so I’m hoping it’s a lot further than this and we’ll be able to see the whole thing soon. Experten has a line of 1/100 Macross transformable resin kits that he brings to Wonderfest and they usually sell out pretty quick. So if you’re heading that way for one of these, you better have a lot of time and a lot of yen to snag up one of these babies, if it’s there by then. Good luck!

May’n Los Angeles Concert Review

Hollywood, June 21, 2012

The drive down to the Sunset Strip at the heart of Hollywood, California is always a frustrating one no matter which part of Los Angeles you are coming from. Even in the middle of a work week, it makes no difference. The restaurants, the bars, the landmark concert venues are normally bustling as people leave their work and meet up to begin their night life. But on this particular Thursday night, four old school Macross fans, now far removed from those sorts of activities, decide to meet up with interests piqued to witness a true singing idol from their favorite anime series. BigKid24 (one of the winners of the forum contest) Eternl D, Kirik, and I braved thru the infamous L.A. rush hour traffic to see May’n.

“Macross: Do You Remember Love” & “Macross Frontier Movies 1+2”: Triple bill theatrical screening in July; plus “DYRL” TV Special to air

This has been known for a while but I figured I ought to front-page it sooner rather than later, plus new details keep being added every so often.

To celebrate its much-hyped Blu-ray debut next month, “Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love”, the movie that showed impressionable 80s kids that “you can still fight when you’re drunk” * is back on the BIG SCREEN, yes, in Technicolor and all that jazz, for a limited time only.  To differentiate it from the last Tokyo screening in 2010, this time they are using the newly remixed 5.1 channel soundtrack, so you can experience it in a completely fresh way.

Not only that, but it’s running back-to-back with screenings of the two “Macross Frontier” movies (“Itsuwari no Utahime/The False Songstress” and “Sayonara no Tsubasa/The Wings of Farewell”), to round off a monster triple-bill TRIANGLER of a Macross movie marathon.

So bring your friends, your mega-size popcorn and your deodorant, because we’re in for a dusk-till-dawn test of hardcore sci-fi-robot-action-romance-all-singing-all-dancing-space-opera-schoolgirl-slapping endurance!  “The women must not penetrate!”

Shinjuku Wald 9 (katakana-pronounced as “Baruto 9”, bizzarely) will be hosting this triple screening on three nights, details follow.

Megaroad Launch Ceremony Announced

While some sort of event has been alluded to in recent months, the first details of the Megaroad launch ceremony were announced via the Macross Fanclub yesterday.

Titled ‘First Long-Distance Immigration Fleet, Megaroad Launch Ceremony 2012‘, the event will be held on September 2nd in two parts.

Currently confirmed guests (with more to be announced) include Megaroad Captain Mika Doi (Misa Hayase), as well as Megumi Nakajima (Ranka Lee) and Aya Endo (Sheryl Nome).

Standard tickets are 4500yen, with special tickets (which come with some sort of as of yet unannounced merchandise) costing 5800 yen. The event is limited to Macross fanclub members only, although even then ticket sales will be decided by a draw, meaning they will be more difficult to get that a bandai valk preorder.

Discuss here.
