Podcast: Retrospective on Yamato Macross Toys

sunset

As previously reported HERE, Yamato, the company that brought fans the greatest Macross toys ever is undergoing some changes and forthcoming Macross-licensed items will now be sold under the Arcadia brand.

The evolution of Yamato’s Macross products have always been somewhat synchronous with the growth of Macrossworld as a fansite, seeing as they both began at around the same time, making this transition all the more poignant.

This sign of the changing times gives us  an opportunity to look backand reminisce all the elation and/or frustration that Yamato’s products have given us over their 13-year journey exceeding time and space.

Thus MW member VF5SS and I (Renato from the Macross Speaker Podcast) got together for a talk session where we powered through Yamato’s entire back-catalogue, with a smattering of insights on the company philosophy and the changing nature of the market taken from an interview I personally conducted with Yamato Toys staff in June 2012.

Macross Chronicle, new edition, issue #1 released!

The Macross Chronicle is back!

Remember way back in 2008, when the definitive encyclopedia of all things Macross-related was announced?  Well, it came and went, leaving us with a roster of 50 bi-weekly issues of cool art and full-to-the-brim stats for all you hardcore nerdy types.  And now “THE TIME TO SCRAMBLE VALKYRIE AGAIN” because the Chronicle has returned, meatier than ever, courtesy of DeAgostini.  After a trial run in the Hiroshima area last year, 80 WEEKLY issues have been promised, and the first one comes with a free binder rocking some super dimensional Tenjin artwork of the majestic SDF-1.

A few photos and comparisons with the old release follow.

VF-4G Transformation Photo Gallery

22

At Yamato’s annual open showroom back on Dec. 2, Save and I got a step-by-step walkthrough of how to transform the VF-4G, courtesy of some on-site staff.
Thanks to Save’s photoshop skills (editting done in the middle of a podcast recording, no less), kick-ass camera, and my..er…fingers, we have been able to put together the following photographic walkthrough on how to transform the VF-4G. Save has also included a few more miscellaneous pics of Yamato’s latest as well.

Enjoy!

MacrossWorld Convention 2012 Wrap Up

Oct. 21, 2012 – I woke up that day thinking, “Hmmm. MacrossWorld Con is today, I should get started on that 1D custom and take it there.” Two hours later I was done and walked out the door.

Wait… that was the dream I had before I actually woke up.”

Oct. 21, 2012 – I woke up that day thinking, “Oh crap! It’s 10am? WTF? I stayed up until 4am painting the figures and putting all the final detail on the 1D. I still have to clear coat the figures and glue some final pieces.” At 12pm, an hour after the con started I was still gluing some parts. The phone rings…It’s Bigkid, must be some con emergency or else why would he be calling?

“Hello?”

“Hey, we brought your binaltechs to the con instead of waiting for the TF meet, how much do you want to sell the Smokescreen for?”

“What?”

“Smokescreen…”

“I got glue all over my iphone… let me call you back!”

“wait!…”

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep…

“Awww, crap!”

Heading Over

It’s early Sunday afternoon, why is it gridlocked? Freakin’ L.A. traffic.

This year I decided to not be a part of the MWCon committee, so I wasn’t required to be there at a certain time. Actually I decided two years ago that it was too much work for me and that I would just sit back and enjoy the next one. I’d like to think that that was the reason we didn’t have a con in 2011, but the fact of the matter is that Kirik just had a kid and certain responsibilities were just building up for the rest of the guys. Maybe they were caught up in the moment of the 30th Anniversary of Macross and decided they wanted to do it once more this year. But in my case, I didn’t have a good time at the 2010 Convention even though everyone was saying it was the best con ever. It was certainly the most successful. We had amazing displays, a great location in the heart of UCLA, more than doubled the attendance. In fact, the hall was super crowded like never before.

So it was decided that we were going to do a smaller event this year. A call back to the days where we just sat around, ate crappy pizza and talked toys, models and customs. Sounds good to me.

But…

DYRL Blu-ray featured on “Playstation Community Cafe”

Hooray for almost month-old news.

On July 25th, the Playstation Community blog uploaded a special 20-minute video featuring the then forthcoming “Macross Do You Remember Love” Blu-ray release.  The video goes into detail about how the included “My Boyfriend is a Pilot 2012” PS3 game plays, how the movie looks better than ever, and it showcases many of the bonus materials contained within the limited edition “30th Anniversary Box”.

It’s a nice introduction to the set for those who have not yet had the opportunity to check out all the great contents included.

You can view the video HERE

Discuss in the DYRL-BD thread HERE

The Macross Original Art Exhibition Gallery Samples

Here’s a few sample pieces from the “Macross Original Art Exhibition” being held at  at the Seibu Ikebukuro Seibu Gallery in Tokyo. The Gallery includes concept artwork from the series when it was being planned to air in 1982 and focuses on Macross Frontier art. It began August 10 and will close on August 22, 2012. Many of our folks in Japan have attended this exhibit and have posted about their hauls and experiences in the forums and on youtube. They site Hollywood.ch.com posted a couple of images from the event which can be seen after the jump.

GA Graphic Website to shut down July 31, 2012

According to this post, GA Graphic, one of the most informative websites on the net that has brought Japanese toys, statues and models news since 2005 will be shutting down at the end of this month. They are also responsible for bringing us the Master File Publications such as the upcoming Variable Fighter Master File VF-0 Phoenix, the two VF-1 books, one for the VF-19 and one for the VF-25. The Master File Publications will continue according to the announcement, but the editorial department for the web site is scheduled to disband on the 31st.

Sad news indeed. Thanks for the scoops, GA Graphic. You will go down as one of the better sites that are now gone. Sigh, reminds me of Zinc Panic.
