If Zentraedi are genetically

It's only obvious that the Laplamiz fleet was joined with the Bodolza fleet to fight the Protodeviln if you already accept that the two fleets were on different sides of the Protoculture Civil War. I'm still not sure I understand what the basis is for believing that.

I can't find any pictures of the Chlore fleet's ships from Fleet of the Strongest Women (though I did come across a picture of Chlore's Q-Rau). Are they shown in the animation? Do they follow the design style of the Meltrandi in DYRL?

Hm. I think a lot of this has been covered alt.fan.macross.

Here's the thread.

Egan Loo's comments (starting with article #16) and followups are particularly enlightening. To the extent that Egan Loo represents the "official" continuity (based on his reading of liner notes and conversations with Kawamori), it seems that there was no "factional" split between Male and Female Zentradi during the Protoculture Civil War.

Yes, I just took a look at episode 27 (Robotech version, my Animeigo DVD's from overstock.com aren't due yet) and I could tell there was a greyish (I guess it was a purplish) ship. I couldn't tell exactly what type of ship she had, but based on the style it seemed to be the same as other Zentradi ships. In Macross Perfect Memory, there's no "special" Laplamiz/female ship type shown in the "Mechanic" lineart section (specifically pages 176-182, which cover the Zentradi star ships)

One might argue that the DYRL designs supersede the TV ones even though the TV continuity is official, but that doesn't appear to be the position taken by the Compendium.

Edited to add:

Speaking of the Compendium, this item from the Chronology is interesting:

2010

April

Establishment of new United Nations Government [new Unity Government]. Education programs for Zentradi begin. Miclone processing of Zentradi applicants begins.

May

Macross City reconstruction begins. [Macross City reconstruction completed.]

Mass cloning of people as well as animals and plants through the use of Protoculture technology begins.

(Link here.)

Yeah also from the Compendium:

2030

Because of the increase in hereditary children's diseases due to the overuse of cloning, mass cloning is terminated.

Mass cloning turned out to be a disaster.

It's a logical conclusion. As the number of clones increases, so does the amount of inbreeding.

Eventually you HAVE to stop cloning and let the genes get mixed up the way nature intended.

They carried the project on untill the (likely predicted) negative side effects started showing, then cancelled it before things got worse.

It served its purpose in repopulating the Earth in a fraction of the time otherwise required.

I would consider it far from a disaster.

One major hole in that being the simple fact that there has "never" been a male fleet shown to use the female ship designs (as seen in DYRL, FotSW, & Macross VFX-2). The technological style is so dramatically different from the standard male style we're used to seeing, that it seems illogical that it could not have been soley used by one side of the civil war. And hey, who knows, maybe they males & females were freeling used on both sides, but that is a definate hole in the theory that females weren't soley used on one side.

Cloning

I dont know if this has been mentioned yet but copies are never as good as the original and copies of copies are worse with each generation. Add to the fact of coping genetic diseases, and possible inbreeding by unkown genetic siblings you end up with a total mess. It's no wonder cloning was stopped.

Zentraedi Fleets

So far there have only been three fleets; Bodolza's, Lapalmiz, and Chlore's, and Bodolza's and Lapalmiz fleets apear in alternate universes with vastly different ships. The addition of DYRL? into the continuity along unexplained use of movie designs in the various sequals has caused a lot of confusion.

However since the TV series is still the official story, the Bodolza fleet is still a mixed armada made up of many fleets of both sexes. Breetia, Kamjin, Lapalmiz, and Chlore are all assigned to this armada. The use of designs in the movie can be explained (unofficially ofcourse) as CGI ships based on designs found within the Factory Satellite. The (unoficial) reason why Chlore's fleet has the newer ships is that her fleet was upgraded with these new designs before that section of the factory was destroyed. Since that section of the factory was destroyed the lapalmis fleet and others had to make do with thier older equipment.

Can males use female equipment and female males? Yes

1. Max pilot's a "Female" Quedlunn Rou.

2. The spies are escorted by a male soldier and launcher frm a purple ship assigned to Lapalmiz's fleet.

3. The human escapees return to earth space on a purple ship assigned to Lapalmiz's fleet. Onboard that ship are male soldiers and Tactical Battle Pods.

4. Lapalmiz uses a "Male" Officer's Battle Pod.

5. Both sides use the fighter pods.
