Any hobbies other than macross?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what you do. Recently picked up 7 baby tarantulas. Had a couple about 20 years ago but. Decided to jump back into it. I use to be into guns but that faded off. Also was into WW2 German militaria for a while but it’s quite expensive and is fraught with fakes.  Also have 3 tortoises.

Would “other hobbies” include collecting other toy lines?

If not, I occasionally play the piano.  Nowhere near professional level or performance-worthy, but semi-passable.

What amazes me is when people can just play by ear.  They hear a song and are able to just sit at the piano and play the song fully with harmonies, chords, and the whole nine yards.

I usually need the sheet music to play.  I learned the old fashioned way and haven’t practiced enough doing the chords method.

I'm into Transformers (obviously, if you hang out in either of the TF threads and read my reviews), both the cartoons, toys, and comics.  I also collect NECA Godzillas.  I enjoy reading, fiction and non-fiction, books and comic books.  I don't really watch anime as much as I did in college, but I'm a big Gundam fan.  I do like a lot of Western cartoons, though, everything from kids stuff (I'm currently watching the Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) to more adult-oriented stuff (my favorite is Archer).  Mostly, though, I like video games.  I play modern games, mostly on PC, but I'm really into retro gaming, too.  On the retro front it's not just the games.  I like watching Youtube videos and reading up on the history behind a lot of the old consoles, especially the ones I didn't have as a kid.

Forgot to mention I have some remote control airplanes I’m hoping to get out soon. I use to do it about 10 years ago and thought it was cool but never thought it was a calming hobby. Quite easy to dump a $300+ dollar plane into the ground.

I have so many hobbies I pretty much have to cycle through them.  Like, all my money/time/forum-browsing will be focused on one for a few weeks/months, then switch to one of the others.  Eventually cycling back to see "all the new stuff I missed while I was enjoying my other ones".

Lately, I’ve been trying to get some home improvement projects off the ground, building some Gunpla, and playing D&D. I hadn’t played that since I was a kid, so getting back into it was fun. We’ve been playing over Discord since lockdown, which doesn’t have the same energy.

My other big hobby is to plan modeling projects; knowing all the while that I don’t have the time, money, or talent to actually complete them. Sometimes I enjoy it more than actually modeling.

I collect Transformers, but I like mecha in general, so I also collect some Zoids, and build the infrequent Gundam. I've recently discovered the 52 Toys' BeastBOX figs, and ordered a slew of them (actually expecting two packages of them tomorrow). I'm also into LEGO, which far outweighs any of my other collecting both in terms of money and volume. I'm a MOC builder as well as a set collector, and I attend one or two LEGO conventions every year. I also read, both fiction and non; the most recent book I read was The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Recommended, BTW. And I dabble on the piano, although I have no talent to speak of. And I enjoy cycling through various forums dedicated to LEGO, Transformers, and, of course, Macross, along with Pinterest , Flickr, ArtStation, and DeviantArt.

Almost forgot video games; mostly open world RPG/FPS like Fallout 3 & 4, stuff like Deus Ex, Dishonored, etc, and every now and again some old school C&C or Civilization IV.

Oh yeah, what edition?  My friends and I were pretty into 3rd edition (my first edition at the table, although I'd played several AD&D PC games).  We skipped 4th edition, but for a group that's pretty resistant to change I ran a brief 5e campaign, and the group decided they liked it enough that the guy who usually runs our games started us playing the Rise of Tiamat.  Sadly, one of the guys in our group has been having some health issues and hasn't been able to play regularly, so even before the lockdown we switched to board games since it was less of an issue if someone couldn't make it.  I'm hoping after things open up again that we can start something up again.

I'm a former Martial Artist before injuries took me out of that.  Turned former Argentine Tango and Blues Dancer before injuries took the wind out of those sails too.  I still collect the occasional comic book.  I collect vinyl, music really, and if you've ever been by the music section I occasionally post some of my DJ sets.  Looking into leaning music production and voice lessons now.

I build gunpla (and other plastic models, but generally gunpla-style kits rather than aircraft).

I also have a 3D printer and occasionally design something in CAD for it.

A few tabletop RPG  games with friends (currently doing Pathfinder 2 via roll20 remotely).

I also go to the shooting range on occasion, though not recently as they're all shut due to COVID.

I played 2nd way back when, but was like 8, and it didn’t make a lot of sense to me. We play 5th now, which seems more streamlined. We’re running in a custom world from my DM.

I'm a self described gaming otaku furry (see icon).

So I do wargaming, mostly 40K, but Relic Knight, Malifaux and dabbed into flames of war and Armada. Tabletop RPGs, D&D, was doing pathfinder until the lockdown and played several others and ran a few in other systems:

AD&D, D&D 3.0-5.0, SWRPG, Rogue Trader, Dark Heresy, Ironclaw & Jadeclaw, Dragon Age, Numerica...

Played many a board game and card game (MtG, Pokemon, SW, ST, Anime Mayhem)

Also into video games by default and spent more time then I'd like in MMOs. Just picked up PSO2 recently and going to try my hardest not to go too deep.

Collected comics for a time, DC (Green lantern)/Marvel(Deadpool) and a few indies (Withcblade/Spawn). Currently only supporting Gold Digger(AP) right now.

Anime I'm all over the place collecting things from series I like to support them in some method either by getting soundtrack, manga, light novels, models or toys.

Pretty much a jack of all trade geek.

Oh and I collect WWII films, I'll see about getting a picture over the weekend.

Grandpa!  Well, I guess I could be a Grandpa now but if my kids wait 5+ more years that would be  better.

This is a picture of my game table and some of my games in the background.  The blog is all about my gaming activity for anyone with insomnia.

Haha, predominantly the vintage WWII games. He served in Europe during the war, and maintained an interest in cardboard pusher strategy games. He then passed this onto my dad, who was into more sci-fi versions of the same, like Ogre, etc.

I used to play Warhammer 40,000 on a regular basis... I've been looking at getting back into it.

Some of my coworkers roped me into joining their Overwatch team, so I've been playing that competitively for about half a year now.

I've also been coordinating watch parties on Discord with several coworkers and friends who are casual anime fans looking to sample various titles... we've been doing a weekly Jojo's Bizarre Adventure marathon and finally got to Stardust Crusaders: Battle in Egypt this week.

My RPG group's on hiatus, but we've been taking a break from my heavily hand-edited take on Palladium Books's Macross RPG to play Dark Heresy and Pathfinder.

I'm also involved as a volunteer researcher with a couple different local historical societies, and I'm a volunteer coordinator and judge for National History Day's events here in Michigan.

... and because it sort of meshes with my Macross hobby, I also sometimes do translations by request for Gundam publications like Master Archive Mobile Suit and artbooks from various other anime properties.  I've also occasionally accepted commissions to translate doujinshi, which I've mostly stopped because there isn't enough brain bleach in the world to unsee the things I've seen.  (It's not even the gore or freaky porn, some of the stuff I've seen makes Rob pecs-bigger-than-their-head help-I-can't-draw-feet Liefeld look like a master of anatomy.)

I'm not sure if it necessarily counts as a hobby, but I also take in a lot of pets that people can't care for or can't take with them to a new home... I've ended up with a lot of weird critters part-time or full-time because of that.

That's really cool. I'd like to be able to really dance.:yahoo:

I'm a retired motorcycle roadracer. By 35 yrs old I realized I was mortal and that was the end of being in the top three. After 10yrs of being at race tracks all over the US 20-25 weekends a year I wasn't too heartbroken calling it quits. I miss it to death though. Every morning I wake up and say "Today I buy that Ducati Panigale and get back o the track". And after I have had my coffee I come to my senses.

I screwed around with bodybuilding for 6 years after racing. I don't do that very seriously anymore. I only lift in the winter for health, maintain a little muscle mass, keep me sane, etc.

I did some USPSA shooting in this time period too. That got pretty old pretty fast though. It's more fun setting up your own courses of fire.

I got into mountain biking heavy three years ago. Usually get out 3-4x/wk and a few out of town trips per season. My three weapons of choice.

Nice! I have a few of those and some others, mainly as reference for wargames like Air Superiority and Air Strike. They are hidden in this area:

Besides Macross...

There's that photography thing I've been doing.  Which I can't really do right now while socially distancing.  Waiting for things to improve or come up with some good work arounds.

There's those other Toy lines that I collect.  Waiting for Hasbro Pulse to send out my preorders.

There's all those old RPG books I collect.

There's messing around with my PS4. RD2 Online anyone?

Does watching YouTube count?

Been playing guitar for longer than I've been collecting anime figures, haven't improved much over the years, for several reasons

Collecting anime figures is on a very, VERY low priority, having no place to showcase them is one of the reasons, the other is cost in combination with real life and my most expensive hobby:

The Knight Rider game is somewhat hilarious in concept- we played it with the kids a lot when they were younger. Basically one person controls KITT and the others are "bad guys" trying to get KITT. The KITT player tries to run over little points places to collect them. You can get control of KITT by ramming your car into him, whereas the player controlling KITT keeps control if they avoid it. Players all have "swerve left" and "swerve right" cards IIRC. So when you drive into the same spot as KITT, you and the KITT player decide which way you swerve. If you swerve the same direction, you crash and therefore become the new KITT player. If opposite directions, the current player retains control of KITT.

It has pretty much nothing to do with the actual show and the logic of it is even weirder in terms of connecting to the show, but I had to have it when I saw it at a flea market years ago.

This one is interesting in that it basically was trying to recreate the video game in a board game format. Your little fighter piece can extend to go "higher" over wall obstacles or lower to dip into wall tunnels. There are walls with both, little turret towers, and all kinds of bits like that in the game. There are also little fuel barrels you can hit to get more fuel.
