* Add S-3 Viking

818500710_S31.thumb.jpg.2c87ec52709b489372096c1597aa21a7.jpg

The S-3 Viking was a carrier-based anti-submarine aircraft used by the U.N. in the Unification Wars. The S-3 equipped with advanced electronics and sonar to detect and against the large number of Anti-U.N. submarines. With a buddy-fueling system, the S-3 could increase the range of other aircrafts, especially helpful to the first generation non-thermonuclear engine VF-0 variable fighters.

The S-3 Viking in the real world U.S. Navy. It carries a crew of four.

As you can see in this comparison picture that there’s little room and no pylon point between the turbine and fueling tank, so I’m not certain how the S-3 in the anime was able to carry an extra gun pod for Focker. Maybe it was a special mod?

1081198146_S3Gunpod(1).thumb.jpg.d68cda0c06322181106600af8dde5cb0.jpg

I don't like this Hasegawa kit much, but there is no other 1/72 S-3 to choose from. Also the raised panel line isn’t the easiest to work with when weathering and applying decals.

After some research, I chose MRP 038 (light ghost grey) for the body and 105 (U.S. Navy grey blue) for the cockpit. MRP are lacquer based paints for airbrush and they are well known for their color accuracy and quality. Here is a good reference site for the U.S. aircraft colors.

* Add VF-0D Shin Kudo

1537222601_VF0DShinKudo1.thumb.jpg.a340e16a5f42b439a3e4ec7e0f0eae45.jpg

VF-0D is a two-seater version of the VF-0A variable fighter. Compared to the 0A, the 0D has canards and bigger wings for improved performance, but its combat radius was still relatively short because of the conventional EFG-127 turbine engines. The VF-0D can also carry a variety of weaponry, including former NATO spec missiles and bombs. Here is Lt. Shin Kudo and Lt. Edgar LaSalle’s customized blue VF-0D.

This is a great product from Arcadia. Some may dislike the bleeded panel lines and inverted pre-shading colors, but it looks okay to me. Also I felt no need to further work on a product for a first time. Overall this late version VF-0D has beautiful details, tight fitment, and good articulation.

Update to the first post:

* Add VF-11B Thunderbolt

1087791721_VF11B1.thumb.jpg.d5cf67418865061832f7f8288626272d.jpg

VF-11 Thunderbolt was the successor to the VF-4 Lightning III variable fighter. VF-11 was versatile for both atmospheric and space missions, therefore it was vastly deployed as fleet escort and planetary defense fighters throughout the 2030s.

20201122_211701.thumb.jpg.1b8b3765b438ceceb833e63580a5bae6.jpg

The VF-11 has a beautiful design, and it looks suitable as a mass production fighter. I referenced Hasegawa's 1/72 and added some panel lines and water slide decals.

I have mixed feelings for this old Yamato VF-11B. Its fighter and Gerwalk forms are beautiful and faithfully represent the original design of Shoji Kawamori. Also the details are unexpectedly better than the VF-0s. But this VF-11B doesn't play well, mainly because of the loose hip joints and cockpit shield.

* Add MiG-29 early type

1583730323_Mig291.thumb.jpg.4c2a1125876904c6e03c0224f4226f18.jpg

The MiG-29 (NATO codename: Fulcrum) was a fighter used by the Anti-UN (AUN) throughout the Unification Wars. Because the war deteriorated badly for the AUN, some late type MiG-29s were enhanced with additional canards, flares, electronics, and weaponry. However, they were still outmatched by the large number of U.N. drones in battle.

The metallic colors of Alclad II (lacquer) are great. After spraying, polish with True Metal wax (enamel) from AK Interactive. A good thing is the wax can be removed with enamel thinners without removing the base paint.

Update to the first post:

* Add F-14 S-Type Kai

* Add Anti-U.N. Naval Infantry

The F-14 S-Type is a test fighter modified by Shinsei Industries for the U.N. It has a specialized paint composition that claims to be able to reduce its RCS signal by 70%. It also has a GU-11 gun pod which later became a standard weapon for the VF-1s.

20210320_181017.thumb.jpg.a0de15e73ed42d4089cb77e35bf49b42.jpg

Some may question its canonicity. To me, it’s ok as long as it respects the source material and is not too far stretched (as opposed to the new Treks, ugh). Also Kawamori has a somewhat vague attitude on things to be considered canon.

20210320_181612.thumb.jpg.5e3c031453812858fcb70c3c0b73e5a5.jpg

This aircraft is hefty because it’s a diecast model. But it has loose pylons just like the other Calibre Wings F-14s.

20210320_182033.thumb.jpg.bd8faa1c8fddb30e38d0db91ea00bb94.jpg

The Naval Infantry was an elite amphibious unit of the Anti-U.N. They participated in major battles like the attacks of South Ataria Island during the Unification Wars.

Shin’s flashback in Macross Zero episode 2. This is one of few times that Anti-U.N. regulars were shown on screen. They look like Russian light infantry, but it’s hard to know for sure.

The A-10 (nicknamed Warthog) was a close air support attack aircraft for the U.N. It was widely used against the Anti-U.N. ground units during the Unification Wars.

The A-10 carries a massive number of weapons. Here it shows a 30mm GAU-8 autocannon, 12 MK-82 general purpose bombs, 2 GBU-10 laser-guided bombs, 4 AGM-65 anti-armor missiles, 2 AIM-9L air-to-air missiles, and an ALQ-119 ECM pod.

The A-10s are well known for their survivability. Many A-10s were heavily damaged on the battlefield but still managed to fly back to the base.

Although this Hobby Boss may be the best among all 1/48 A-10s, its quality is only average. I was not happy with this kit to be honest, mainly because of the bad fuselage and the engine designs, which made polishing very difficult. About the Hasegawa 1/72, I wanted to build it at first but gave it up because of its raised panel lines.

The colors are MRP 038 (light ghost grey) and 097 (dark ghost grey). This combination works well on the F-15s but its contrast was a bit too strong on the A-10s, therefore I sprayed a much thinned 038 to blend the colors.

That's all, have fun! :)

Nice! One of my favorite aircraft. I thought it may be a diecast model at first and was wondering why Hatchette can’t release one with a payload like that (that I know of). A-10s should always be armed to the teeth unless they just unloaded on some poor targets.

The VF-X was an experimental prototype Valkyrie. It cannot transform but is equipped with thermal-nuclear reaction engines, and that is opposite from the VF-0s. With the success of VF-X, U.N. began mass production of VF-1s as its main variable fighter.

VF-X has no head and arms, so it can only transform partially. Here is the VF-X in quasi-Gerwalk mode.

The Yamato version 2 Valkyries are fine toys. I wish Arcadia and Bandai would release more lesser known Macross products. Here I avoided yellow warning marks to better match the VF-X’s original colors.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Absolutely amazing work on the VF-X! So very jealous because it's one of the only valks I'm missing that I really want! :o

He could always make multiple accounts and give himself a bunch of likes. But that would be a rather sad and pathetic thing to do, so best not to. :rofl:
