Charlie's Angels 2019

Mmmmillennial says no thanks. That trailer was a dumpster fire of "modern" editing. The only draw here is it being directed by Elizabeth Banks, whose films as an actress have always been just slightly off-beat and weird. I never would have thought of her taking a role in something like Slither, for instance, and yet there she was, super game for it.

(Apparently she was turned down for MJ in the Raimi Spider-Man films because she was "too old" at 28 and instead played Betty Brant. I never would have made the connection if I hadn't checked IMDB just now.)

Really? Seriously? Why? and NO NO NO!!!!!!!!

When there are literally millions of fantastic original novels that could be adapted into movies, Hollywood is attempting a second movie reboot of a 70s TV series.....Grrrrr!

Pass just on principal.

That's modern Hollywood for you. Why do something original when you can recycle an old name instead? Even better if, once the name is secured, you make sure the movie has very little to do with the namesake.

To be fair, I found Guy Ritchie's "Codename U.N.C.L.E." quite hilarious.

I honestly was hoping for a modern day porno version.... pass.

In Brazil, Charlie's Angel received the name of "As Panteras". But have a adult movie producer named As Panteras...

And made a porn parody from the first movie named "As Piranhas" (The Whores)

I see only three good things in that trailer:
#1  They are using guns again.  Drew BaringMore's insistence that they not use guns in her movies was stupid, they were super cops, let them use guns.
#2 Elizabeth Banks, need I say more.
#3 Patrick Stewart, how much did they have to pay him to be in this steaming pile?

Everything else, casting, acting, set pieces, music, utter crap.

Probably less than they paid him to PLAY a steaming pile in The Emoji Movie.

...

I thought he had standards, but I was clearly mistaken.

Patrick Stewart has a sense of humor and will do things because they amuse him. Like his character on American Dad. Same way Anthony Hopkins flat out said he doesn't take acting seriously and does roles for shits and giggles. Or Christopher Walken talking about how he just sort of grabs scripts at random after finishing a movie.

That and seriously it's the very first trailer for the movie. Acting as if it's some horrific dumpster fire based off the very first trailer is kind of assuming way too early.

Starship Troopers?

There was no powered armor, of course, but a lot of the fascist subtext from the novel survived in the film adaptation... and, despite the white American leads, they even kept the Latin names and Argentinian setting from the book.

If you want examples of movies that actually have nothing to do with their namesake, take a look at Æon Flux, Catwoman, Jem & the Holograms, The Lawnmower Man, the Resident Evil films, or Super Mario Bros...

ESPECIALLY Super Mario Bros.  <_<

I was going to let this go because I didn't want to hijack the thread, but the more I think about it the more I'm certain you never read the Starship troopers book. The book is no more about fascists than the Honor Harrington series is about pushing Monarchists. There are no pointless life is cheap bloodbaths, and Rico is actually punished for seeing his troops as disposable during a training exercise.

There is no "Argentinian setting". Rico has a latin name because he is Filipino. The only time Argentina is mentioned was when the bugs attacked Buenos Aires with ships and troops(not an asteroid drop) killing Rico's mother who was visiting there at the time. If anything the novel spends most of it's time in the Canadian Pacific northwest apart from Sanctuary, Planet P, Klendathu, and the skinnie homeworld.

I guess I deserve that one.  I read the book as a teenager, but before I'd seen the 6-episode OAV series, Verhoeven's film, the straight-to-video sequels, the Roughnecks TV series, or Shinji Aramaki's CGI films.... and after all that, not much of Henlein's novel remains in my memory.  :(

I certainly don't remember the Bugs having ships and troops...!

Well, several scholars would disagree with you about that...

Having never seen the previous films or the original TV series, however, I have no knowledge whatsoever of Charlie's Angels.

Starship Troopers CONTAINS some fascist material, but isn't ABOUT fascism. It certainly isn't fascist propaganda, as Heinlein's own political leanings are fairly well-documented and he kind of hated fascism. He almost certainly wouldn't publish a book intended to incite a rise in fascism.

Much the same way that Star Wars isn't ABOUT kicking Space Hitler's arse, though the Galactic Empire is very clearly evocative of the Third Reich.

I thought Star Wars was about the Vietnam war.

Indeed.  George Lucas has been quoted in various articles over time stating that the actual inspiration for the rebels came from the fact that the Viet Cong where able to resist the American backed South Vietnamese army.  Richard Nixon's re-election campaign might have been the inspiration for the Emperor.  The Third Reich stuff was more of the window dressing and cautionary tale about handing power over to tyrants:

Now I need to scroll up to see just how we got to space Nazis in a thread about Charlies Angels.

This is my exact issue with Starship Troopers. The various adaptations have warped and corrupted the source material so much they completely miss the point of the book and almost everything is taken out of context. Even the more faithful ones like Roughnecks don't do it justice. People seem to think adding power armor or big flashy propaganda eyecatches(a Verhoven creation going back to Robocop) are somehow doing the source justice.

The book itself is a memoir and the framing is Rico recounting the experiences of his service in the bug war, why he joined, and how he coped with day to day military life in and out of combat. Everything in it is from his point of view and how he sees the world. That is the context that's lost on people and where accusations of militarism and fascism come from. Things like federal non military civil service get mentioned but are glossed over because that's not why Rico joined. He joined specifically to follow Carmen into the Navy and after testing and failing miserably he was inducted into the Mobile Infantry(essentially the Terran Federation's Marine Corps).
