derex3592 Posted March 30, 2019 Share Posted March 30, 2019 Sorry Dobber, but I have no doubt your repaint will be epic! Over here, Space Dock arrived today. The detail is pretty darn good on this... There are a ton of tiny white spots for windows, but they are very hard to see under normal lighting. It's a nice addition though. I'm glad I picked it up. Now I wish that they'll hurry up and make an Orbital Office Complex/Regula One Space Station as well, and maybe even Jupiter Station too. In the Trek universe, the Space dock is so large that it can be seen from the Earths surface with the naked eye. The model was impressively large too, particularly the interior model. Also it seems to come from the mushroom space ship era...Cacoon and E.T. Also used Mushroom like space ships. As a kid I use to confuse them all.. lol. I love these 2 pictures just shows the size of the structure. The first is the filming model (lighting run) which I think looks like what it would look like on the night side orbit The other is just awesome Fan work. mechaninac Posted March 30, 2019 Share Posted March 30, 2019 Star Trek III may catch a lot of flak for a lot of its elements and execution, specially anything related to scenes taking place on the --incredibly fake looking -- surface of the Genesis planet. However, that movie is a treasure trove of new, iconic designs that have not only stood the test of time and have had broad appeal to fans young and old, but have never been bested, IMO, by anything that has come later... matched?... sure, but never outdone. The art department in charge of ships designs and the model makers who built them were at the top of their game (The Merchantman, Klingon BoP, U.S.S. CGI is absolutely impressive and far more seamless in its integration in a scene....particularly in a sci-fi space setting, but there is just something about a well done model that gives something more depth and convey’s size so much more than the best cgi ship/station model. At least IMO. Here’s a couple of shots of the massive 30ft interior model, so awesome Also here is a interesting concept of how the Galaxy class and assumebly other larger vessels could dock with the Spacedock instead of the up scaling that was used for the Next Gen. personally, while I do like that there is enough internal space for the Galaxy class, just larger doors need to be installed. LOL A good rule of thumb with a more realistic* looking movie is: if it is static (e.g. a building or spaceship), there's a good chance that it's a model (something to do with models costing less in the long run). If it's dynamic (e.g. a character), then it's more often than not CG. * perhaps "better director" is better? LOL If I''m not mistaken, directors like Ridley Scott and Christopher Nolan prefer to use them. I think the directors that still use models today like Nolan (Interstellar) or Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049) do it more for nostalgic reasons than artistic value. I noticed he had some trek stuff in his cabinets and right on his desk was the eaglemoss XL discovery. He said he got it from a family member recently and so I got to take a good look at it. Wasn't bad in person, I mean I'm still not a fan of the ship at all, but was kind of impressed with the size. I'm sort of on the fence with this, do I really even wanna bother collecting these or what? I'm more interested in getting the enterprise line up and maybe that Avante class. I dunno. obviously though the smaller ships are not to scale which is a bummer. And I already got all of the old Diamond Select stuff....so again I dunno should I even? They take great pains to ensure that nothing they produce is ever to scale with anything else they produce. I've got five different starship displays, at five different scales, and I'm still stuck with ships that won't scale properly anywhere... Dobber Posted April 7, 2019 Share Posted April 7, 2019 I’ve been working on my Classic Galactica, I was able to mostly straighten out the bow section and have repainted it. Working on painting the red stripes at the moment. Then just a LIGHT wash (Light meaning both in color and intensity). I will post pictures soon. Pretty happy with the results this far. Still need to do son very subtle paneling, then the VERY LIGHT wash, engine effects and detail paint and she’ll be done. Sounds like a lot but it shouldn’t take too long. Looks a lot better IMO. It’s very subtle, as I think it should be in this scale. Most noticeable in the underside picture of the “gator-head” and on the profile shot (the sides of the flight pods and the side of the ship) the wash helps to slightly darken the base coat so that I can go back and paint random panels or raised details the original base coat. So I returned it and ordered a replacement. And got another Basestar. Just had to deal with Amazon customer service to get Amazon gift card/credit.
