Bandai DX Chogokin 1/48 VF-1

My second copy from AmiAmi showed up. Now I know why they charged so much for EMS, they used a box that was about twice as large as it needed to be.

It's really nice that I can pick either one up by a single leg and nothing moves.

I'm really not sure which mode I like better, they all look so good.

More like Gerwalk has 3 forms in it's self.

1) Full Gerwalk with arms
2) Half Gerwalk with no arms
3) Plane with legs for VTOL

If it's TV Series transformation does the pilot just slide the big G switch a part of way to fully engaged position? LOL

Ah thats very clever...unfolding backpack or not eh....i had always tot with the arms tucked in the backpack would also unfold...

3 modes with gerwalk it is! :p

we been doing it wrong getting just 3 copies!

LOLs on the part of the way lever comment!

2 days later and this toy is still awesome.  I just can't stop looking at it.   Pictures really don't do it justice.

I moved the DX into the main room just to see what it would look like.

And wow, its certainly fits the bill as a centerpiece, with it being on the exclusive stand, really eye catching! ;)

the box my friend received with his and my 3rd DX was a 120 Ami box, and the box I received for my 2nd and 3rd was a 140 Ami box.... because of the additional Monster Hunter World teacup I combined with the order. That teacup cost me an additional ~¥1500 EMS over what my friend was charged for just 2 DX shipped DHL! The additional shipping was more than the teacup!

makes sense since you want to go aerodynamic, from hovering state to speed, whilst maintaining the flexibility of stopping on a whim.... i wonder which lever in the controls retracts the arms tho...hmmm...

Maybe the levers F and G are pressed together? And when Hikaru catches Minmay in the DYRL scene inside the SDF, maybe it's F and B?

Ha! The best mode is Fighter. And you don't have it. :acute:

I would like a third to have all modes, but man, it's expensive now. ^_^

After playing with this thing a bit, my comments are the backpack flap should be improved, instead of using a hinge, will it be better for it to be a pullout flap instead? Or is the hinge more anime correct?

I used to have a transformable Bandai 1/72 kit back in the days. And I remember the backpack grill flap is built pulling out instead of folding. However, it wasn't shown in a lineart so not sure what's the accurate. :)

My copy have no major issue.  I found the clicky hinge under the intakes sounded differently between two legs - one is tighter and one is more lose, but not lose enough to cause problem.

One thing I forgot to mention that I appreciate:

The UN SPACY on the gunpod is upside down on both sides so it is the correct orientation when mounted in Fighter mode.

It bugged me that Yamarcadia did it different on each side so the UN SPACY was upside down on 1 side in fighter mode. It took away from the secret that this sleek fighter plane is also a bad ass robot solely created to fight 50 foot tall aliens.

In fact all the markings on the gunpod are oriented for display in fighter mode.

I’d say the inbetween hybrid gerwalk configurations are not really “selectable modes” but are rather control surface configurations based on a maneuver the pilot is demanding on the craft, when the maneuver is no longer demanded, the surface then returns to whichever mode is selected.   Maybe, I have no real idea, none at all to base it on whatsoever.  I’m just trying to figure out how it happens when they only have 3 options to choose from, so something must allow the surfaces to configure temporarily since we do see the hybrid modes in the series.

Im absolutely going to get flagged for pirating this awesome DX thread.

Im out.

For me the hinge looks lil too big, I thoight I remember seeing some line art that showed the flap slides into the back pack than pivots, so maybe the 1/72 kit git it right?

So someone definitely got the pilot size wrong... but if Yamato got it right with their V2... then it looks like the DX is probably right also and the  Yamato 1/48 was way too big...

Bandai has never had a firm grasp of human anatomy when it comes to fighter aircraft cockpits, and an at-best tenuous grasp of scale.

Most of the time, Bandai pilots won't work in anyone else's cockpit because they have this mysterious single structure protruding from their waist, where human beings have two individual legs, and this prevents them from fitting into a cockpit with a traditional center console.  The reverse is also true, since because most other pilots will have individual legs positioned to sit on rudder pedals, the Bandai monopod design won't accommodate their wider stance. :p

Apparently somebody in the amz-jp customer-reviews/comments section had also posted some pilot-figure measurements and comparisons: back in 1/4:

There are also interesting user-pics posted by other amz-jp customers, too.

That actually doesn't look too far off... what you basically have is that Yamato gave us Roy, and Bandai gave us a Hikaru figure. :p

The Yamato one looks a little oversized (which, let's face it, Roy would never fit in a real fighter cockpit), and the Bandai one looks a bit too small, but he's also missing a lot of the bulk that a modern fighter pilot carries.

I liked the right side up & down UNSPACY.   Sure it wasn't correct but it looked correct in Battroid.

Actually, GERWALK always evoke skiing (especially downhill skiing) to me:

Skiing is the normal gerwalk with arms deployed, yes. My speed skating reference was to armless gerwalk mode..hahah...

but one things for sure, certainly reflects Kawamori-san’s thinking at the time he developed the inverted knee joint that he was thinking abt skiers bending the knees ..

Next Valkyrie prototype! Valks with vector nozzles that can also grab things!  Wow that would be interesting!! Imagine dive-bombing from top to fighter beneath you and shredding your enemy with your valk claws!! Do it Kawamori-San!!!!:spiteful:

wait, sounds like something the sv-51 valk could have done?? :o
