I loved (and I do mean LOVED) the Ace Combat series.

That was until the steaming pile of turd that was Assault Horizon and it's dogfight (read dogshite) mode.

The newest addition to the series looks like a return to form and the playstation VR was made for a game like this.

Anyway, the latest trailer has a blatant Isamu homage/reference/ripoff - delete as appropriate

See 1:50 -

it does, but am i gonna buy a ps4 and psvr just to play it? Probably not. (ok maybe)

That's how most Nintendo fans are, that's how I am.  I have maybe three games for my Wii U but IMO it was worth it for those games as I couldn't get them anywhere else.  I remember buying my Sega Saturn just for DYRL and Radiant Silvergun as well...

Oh man!!! I'm so psyched for this.  I just got the PSVR for Christmas for my existing PS4 and have been loving Eve:Valkyrie and the Star Wars Battlefront X-Wing VR mission to bits!  I just can't stand the thumb dualshock controllers to fly, just ruins the whole experience.  I sure hope they have a HOTAS setup for this like they did for Ace Combat 5 (BTW, I managed to rig up my old AC5 flightstick PS2 to work in PS4 via Cronusmax and a PC laptop - its a wiring mess, but at least you can fly via joystick)  I'm just too old for the thumb gerenation :p

The VR is exclusive to PS4.

Whaaat?  Not even on PC?

Not that I actually care... I don't own a VR setup, and while I've been marginally interested in one I actually prefer the behind-the-plane view in Ace Combat so I probably wouldn't use it anyway.  I'm just surprised is all.

there is also a shot of the Edwards AFB lakebed at the beginning, also pretty blatant

Oh, thats what they were! I thought it was the Nazca lines at first...

I don't have a PS4 so other versions would be awesome but I can't see it happening anytime soon. Might just have to re-join the Bond villians favourite electronic company camp again...

Maybe this will be the game that encourages me to upgrade my PS3 to a PS4.

Keep them both.  I did...

Hori Already announced they're making a HOTAS for Ace Combat 7. HOpefully it's not just a rehash of the same saitek X-36 based flightstick they've released a million times already for PS2/3 and XB 360

Thrustmaster also already released a flight-stick for Ps4 but it's a piece of crap that still uses a potentiometer instead of hall-effect sensors. Funny enough it costs as much as the T16000M from the same company that uses the same hall-effect sensors as the Premium Warthog Stick which is the bomb. Best Joysticks imho ;0

Also surprised "macross plus!?" when i saw the trailer end.

Glad we going back to strangereal. And "era of drones" got me interested. Human pilot becoming obsolete now. And we the protagonist probably the fools who challenge that idea.

I just wished they didn't keep making more and more joysticks that are specific to only one generation of Playstation - same USB stick, they just want to keep gouging you to buy the same thing over and over again - argh!

This is why I'm so happy there's PC versions so that I can use whatever flight stick I want.

Just a shame that the VR is rumored to be PS4 only

You'd think after 20 years of fighting these nations of this alternative Earth would be out of resources to wage these air wars and building super weapons.  This might be the game that gets me to buy a PS4.

never played any of these games but how do they play? from what I gather they look more on the arcade style of game play than simulation.

I use DCS quite a bit which is basically full sim and think I'd struggle with something with a far simpler flight model.

What's DCS? Anyway, yeah, it's definitely more arcade than sim. The newest one, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon (available on PC if you want to try the games out, though it's kind of an outlier in the series), is especially arcadey, with default controls auto-leveling your aircraft. The older PS2-era games at least default the movement to a more simulation-ish style; left stick controls pitch and roll, just like a real flight stick, R1/L1 are airbrake/throttle, R2/L2 are yaw.
