This comic is some kind of Whitewashing attempt against Macross?

To be fair, the original Robotech was a whitewashing attempt against Macross.

To be fair to that, the original Macross had its fair share of explicitly white primary/supporting characters. Fokker, Max(?), Global, even Hikaru/Misa I believe were supposed to be half-white American?

Comic book readers are now a branch of the military?

Maybe it's autocorrect, and they meant "cenobites"?

I mean, I can't imagine how anyone who wasn't a pain-worshipping masochist or the kind of fanatical Robotech fan who'd take out a second mortgage to buy Carl Macek's kidney stones would find this comic even slightly readable.

By its very nature, Robotech was an attempt to whitewash Macross.

Carl Macek was pretty darn vocal in his belief that general audiences wouldn't be able to handle the idea of characters who were foreign even in an explicitly-Japanese art form, and aggressively pursued the removal of what he called "ethnic gestures", by which he meant references to Japanese culture.

Roy Focker, Max Jenius, and Bruno Global were all white, though the only Americans on the cast were Roy Focker and Claudia La Salle.

You might be thinking of Amuro Ray from Gundam instead... he was a Japanese-Canadian half.

Hikaru was full-blood Japanese, Misa was full-blood Japanese but spent part of her childhood in Australia.  Minmay was the only half in the main trio, being half-Chinese.

Yeah, I figured I was just mixing bits and pieces of the lore together. I almost wrote that Minmay was the half-American one, too, and suspected she was really half Chinese/Japanese.

We have to keep in mind the context of when the show was "Americanized".  It was what?  30+ years ago?  Well before things like cultural appropriation entered the zeitgeist.

Given that, I think your statement is misleading, as it implies a lot of negative things about his personal character.  My impression of him -rightly or wrongly- is that he was a businessman, and making those changes was a business decision to maximize sales (just like combining 3 different series into one, for syndication purposes).

I'm not saying what he did is right, just that we have to keep context in mind when looking back on the past - especially the further back we go.

Who knows what she's supposed to be in this comic.  Everything's traced from somewhere, which has led to some interesting cases of characters with seemingly fluctuating ethnicity as their facial structure changes from panel to panel.  This comic's an anatomical nightmare.

Eh... it's easy to forget all the blatantly disingenuous, outright fraudulent, and borderline racist stuff he said over the years now that he's no longer around to shoot his mouth off with more of same at conventions and in interviews.  When he wasn't outright claiming that he created the stories in their "Americanized" form and then paid the Japanese to animate 'em, he was rhapsodizing about how he flawed and inferior he felt the original Japanese shows were and claiming the Japanese creators felt his bowdlerized versions were superior to their own work.  He was still making those claims into the early 2000s.  Whether the bowdlerization was his idea, corporate's, or the industry's was a story that changed with the regularity of the tides.  It'd be one thing if he'd stopped at "that's just how we did it back then"... it's something else entirely to argue that whitewashing the shows made them superior to their original Japanese versions and made him a superior creator to the Japanese artists who created the shows. <_<

This thread is too awesome to disappear.  Macross the First got me thinking how awesome Robotech Titan is.  I mean, come on:

You're being traced from a photo of a porn shoot, Minmei.  That's what's happening to your face.

Wow that Claudia and Misa. I mean, maybe even I could pull off something that gloriously bad. Jeez. I almost feel sorry for the artists. I bet they feel honored or lucky to have that gig, but oh man, they did ever choose the wrong franchise to try to out illustrate.

I still wonder which cruel twist of fate made a high profile artist as Brian Wood end up in this mess. I had high opinions on his work for DMZ and Channel Zero.

From what happened in 2013, maybe Brian Wood’s fall from grace.

Still better than Comico...

Can't agree though. Comico was just badly drawn (they couldn't draw Bioroids properly if their lives depended on it), this is badly drawn+messed-up-design+messed-up-pc-leftwingnut-plot.

Well, I would argue that Titan Comics is trying to do something different, with new designs and a different story, and that's gotta be a lot harder than simply reproducing what already exists in animation...

...whereas all Comico had to do was reproduce exactly what appeared onscreen.  With all the animation reference, storyboards and model sheets available to them, how did they manage to fail so badly?

Thirty years later, and I'm still dumbstruck.

I actually don't think any of the art in this new run is bad at all, despite the ribbing I'll gladly give it. Above and beyond anything else, it carrying the Robotech name is reason enough to hate it, rather than any individual effort made in producing it.

That's aggravating rather than mitigating. Trying to fix what wasn't broken.

Its ghastly. It doesn't matter to me if its Robotech or Marvel/DC, I'm not buying any comic with artwork this bad.

Oh, give it time... it's pretty clear that they're headed that way slowly but surely.

When they're not tracing from JCPenney catalogs, porn from Google Images, or Macross toy/model box art, they're already deep in Liefeldian realms of anatomical improbability.

Even then, it's pretty obvious they're not giving it their A-game.

Compare the quality levels of their Robotech comic to their other work and marvel at the extent to which they're phoning this one in.

Wasn't a fair bit of the Comico stuff drawn by Carl Macek's wife?  IIRC the Comico stuff was done on the same kind of shoestring budget that became the norm for all things Robotech in the late 80's and beyond.

(The "As Seen on TV" label is kind of a big red flag for quality whenever it appears...)

... for some reason, this reminds me of Professor Farnsworth's reaction to a blind Leela's attempt at applying her makeup.  "You look beautiful!  Incidentally, my favorite artist is Picasso."

Cool you've found out the truth that Roy....er....I was the one who killed him.  At least I think that's me.   Not the best drawing going on here.  Of course you're all going to find out that Edwards used CGI to frame me for a crime he committed.

Really...Just google "free comics" or "read comics online" and puke to your hearts content.

Can someone explain why Rick is wearing goggles under his face shield? And did Roy just de-age himself or something? Cuz that computer reconstruction of his "smile-you're-on-candid-camera"-moment removed the lines from his face.
