Instead of masking tape, you can use something like Bare Metal Foil, which lays down pretty well on curved surfaces with a little patience. Cover the whole canopy with a piece of foil, the cut the separations with a sharp pointed hobby knife.

I used this first on the canopy of my Falcon, and have done it successfully with aircraft canopies since then.

Does it matter which type of Bare Metal Foil you use? I see they have aluminum, copper, ultra bright chrome etc...

I mean, are they of varying thicknesses or anything?

I think they're all fairly uniform

*whimpering sounds*

You... You wouldn't happen to have advice on proxy bidding, would you?

EDIT:

Well, took a dive and set up an account with From Japan. Hopefully this goes well.

I use Buyee.jp and haven't had any issues yet

Just got my Chuck special (VF-31E) in. For a kit that doesn't include any markings for the bottom, Bandai actually went out of their way to accurately (as far as I can tell) portray the folding dish. Not sure I fully understand it yet, but I think this should look fine on the DX.

Built a few of these already but this is the first I've out any effort into painting. It's crude, even by my standards but I'm still impressed with what you can achieve with a bit of paint and forethought into how you segment (and cut) the stickers before placing them.

The blue green was very hard to get right and the pics make it look much too green (still). The purple grey was a touch easier, with a mix of gunship Gray and violet. Why Bandai gives you one colour for one model and another for a different one is beyond me. The 31S needs the back plate to be purple Gray and the legs to be metallic, along with the spine. The 31J is molded in purple Gray already but has the legs this colour too, and they should be painted metallic instead - what the 31s is already out of the box.

They're 5 dollar kits though and darn good for the price.

Why do I feel like these kits have better proportions than the 1/72 ones? The transforming kit of the 31 feels like the nose is sitting too high, but this one looks like it just has a better profile.

Because these don't have more than 50 parts and don't need to transform 3 ways

I like it!

the more I see it the more I want one... or maybe a few to do as different ships of the class

It's a shame that it's only 10ish cm long. If it were 20, it'd fit in nicely with the Hasegawa SDF-1.

As it were, it they made a Quarter for this collection, that would be about the right scale - easy to convert to attacker, too.

"I'll post pics," he says, then proceeds to wait a week or two. -_- Anyway, here are some poor phone camera pics of the P-Bandai exclusive itasha (unassembled) kits. The cut lines on the sticker sheets might not show due to resizing, but they're definitely stickers and not waterslide decals.

Clear Yellow = VF-31E, Reina

Clear Blue = VF-31J, Freyja

Clear Green = VF-31S, Mikumo

Clear Red = VF-31C, Makina

Clear Black = VF-31F, Kaname

All come with a colorless clear B runner (upper fuselage, doesn't show well in pictures).
