This is still messy but here goes.. I just started scratchbuilding tonite and you can see the shapes starting to form....

I have never been satisfied with the wad the front-middle section hasegawa didn't bother to do right ...

All that kibble on the legs is going away too.

AWESOME!! I had considered trying this too but chickened out. I wish the Storm Attacker kit was still available or would get a rerelease to use it’s more accurate parts.
Keep the updates coming.

Same here; I would have loved a crack at that one.

Amateur hour guys, please don't laugh.

I started building this kit and compared to what's in here, mine will look like a steaming pile of feces, but this thread needed a bump.IMG_20200714_002216.jpg.ba9285be7df819c5ee4cf6f64e7ab902.jpg

The ARMD carriers, at 430m, are supposed to be bigger that Yamato, at 333m in the latest 2199 version.

The toy Yamato I have here for comparison is clearly smaller but I have no idea what the scale is.

Tiny little Yamato is so much more powerful too. Even the Macross Cannon is no match to the Wave Motion Gun. Damn is Yamato overpowered.

What little Yamato is that? It does look like it would display nicely. I’d like to put it with my Macross too.

To be honest, I'm not sure.  I found it at Hobby Off, a used hobby shop in Japan.

Hey... all our work looks bad when we're right in the middle of it. Just consider yours "in progress", and don't worry about how it looks at the moment! I'm pretty sure the rest of the gang here will agree with me.

Of course the decal automatically rotates the wrong way.

Are you putting them on with tweezers?  If so, before you let the decal go, try (gently) rolling a Q-tip over the decals to squish out/suck up the excess water.

I'll try that next time, thanks for the tip :)

I ended up doing it the hard way with tissue paper, lol!

I saw @wm cheng do this....dab of silver paint then clear red to simulate those little red lights dotted all over the SDF-1.

Still working on that wash.  Really subdues the bright colors of the decals.  First Mecha Colle Yamato in the background that my kid ended up destroying when he was 2.

I was really hoping Mr. Mark Softer would settle these decals and I'd wake up this morning with then all sucked right into the seam lines....but instead I woke up to air pockets under each one, lol!  I ended up cutting into each seam line to resolve the issue.

Calling it done.  Very amateur, very out of the box, and even with the magnifying glass from the helping hand, I still missed a lot of stuff, but it looks better than the last SDF1 I built, lol!IMG_20200716_183316.jpg.48d103a115ce1a4d92bfc5ae422d9045.jpg

That Monster is just so tiny.

Those rings turned out ok after cutting the panel lines.

Yamato is tiny but apparently close to scale?

Peter, I think you've got a LOT to be proud of with your work! You've come a long way since your models at 10 years old, and the experience and skill you've gained shows tremendously in your work!

Haha, thanks :)

This kit is pretty cool.  Glad Hasegawa made it possible for us to have this.  I came from a time when the only DYRL SDF1 Macross kits available were really expensive garage kits (Yellow Submarine)?  The Yamato 1/2000 and 1/3000 toys weren't exactly super cheap either so to be able to have a model for about $50, it's not too bad.

Yeah, I remember the Yellow Submarine ones; solid resin.

I'd love to get my hands though on a Hasegawa Storm Attacker TV version and do a transform for it. By the looks of it, should be possible.

Thanks guys!

I noted the blacked out hangar doors on other builds too.  I was thinking about going gray, just to highlight them, but that would require skilled masking or skilled brush work, and I possess neither of those skills so I figured the wash would be good enough to make them pop a bit.

I hope to see more builds here.  Would be neat to see some customized ones, like mid-transformation, or maybe one in Zentran colors, or even a Supervision Army version?  Wasn't there something in DYRL about the ship possibly belonging to the Meltran army?  Have to go back and watch it again.

That looks fantastic @peter!!!  Congrats on a great build and thanks for posting here, Iove seeing everyone's work when I don't have time to build (makes me feel connected a bit).  It's not amateur - give yourself some credit.  It looks really great.  Keep going!

Thanks!  Your custom 1/3000 inspired me to add some of the red lights. It's hard to notice on my 1/4000 scale though.

The amount of detail you added to your kit is mind boggling :)
