am I an a-hole for telling someone they bought something fake?

Um... so here's a thought... has anyone given any thought that it could possibly be a prototype that was never release. It seems that most of the comments have made mention of what and what hasnt been produced. If this is possibly some sort of conceptual prototype that was never put into production then that could explain some issues with it.

In the past i have had my hands on one off prototypes from Kenner and Hasbro, to name a couple, that were hand painted, and packaged but were never actually produced.

Though this set could be a custom unless someone has any thing from Takatoku stating that they never worked on a prototype like this then its all speculation as to its authenticity.

Just a thought.

There *is* a small, close-knit and well coined group of specialist collectors in Japan who specialize in acquiring prototypes/demonstrators/display items/etc. (such as the display SDF-1 I acquired) and it is *just* possible that one might have sold something out of country; even something with such manky typos... Seriously. I've seen blatantly mangled text and pics on some of my legitimate Takatoku releases from their early 80s runs, so the screwy text is not a nail in the coffin of this toy. However, I'd still say it is very, very improbable....

I've seen some of Takatoku's Dorvak, Orguss and Mach Go-Go-Go protos coming onto the Grey market over the years, but never any of the real desirables - and if something like this had been mocked up, the community would have been in a uproar. When Takatoku went under, the entire Macross liscence fell to Bandai and they were very careful about sweeping up all of the proto/demo material.

Could something have slipped through the nets? Certainly... However, in the state that it is in, the odds are so against it that, if that turns out to be a real demo version of an unreleased Takatoku toy, I'll show my **** again at the Vatican - I'd be that impressed.

Still, even as it is, it might find a buyer. There is also a healthy market for clever repros in Japan, but..... go figure. :]

The garbled text on the box with the back-to-front katakana and whatnot clearly indicates amateur work. If it has a tiny chance of it being anything other than a fan custom, it may be a bootleg. But I am 120% sure it's not. I'm sure the hardcore fan who made it was probably on these boards in the old days anyway -- the community was so close back then. Maybe some original members know who made it.

In any case, it is definitely not from Japan.

Yes because the people making the customs were trying to make it appear as authentic as humanly possible, note the custom VF-1D above also credits Takatoku. The M&M marriage set is trying to be a 20th anniversary set so it would be a Bandai product if it was made by anyone. I wonder if any of these customs went so far as to take the Bigwest sticker off of licensed merchandise and apply it to these customs.

I remember there use to be a lot of 1/55 customs such as the super ostrich or Max VF-1S. There were alot of websites about 12 years ago dedicated to 1/55 customs too. Yamato seems to give us enough variants that people do not feel the need to customize 1/55's the way they use to.

Yeah I remember hunting for the Takas back in the day. . .

As soon as I found one at a good price it would get sniped right outta my hands. . .

Ebay and yahoo auctions were like crack back then!
