Ok, so if this is set in the modern day why the heck are there all these humans out there and a hyper-evolved sentient racoon?

Because it is in the far reaches of outer space away from Earth.

I could not believe Marvel chose to do this movie, the concept is abstract and out there. Trailer and related videos are looking good. This is a must see for me.

So in this video Moviebob talks about who is who in the trailer, not just the main characters:

... and that is a lot, and I mean a lot of weird characters and concepts Marvel is trowing around. One can't help but admire the set of balls required to try a weird movie like this. Hope it is good and does well.

I really, really want this movie to be good. I almost need it to be good. This and Godzilla were the only two summer "tent pole" movies I really needed to be good. Godzilla delivered, now this has to. Please, please please be good.

Have hope, but if anything I'm sure there will be a good laugh or two (Slither sure had some moments :p).

I do wonder how this movie will do. It says Marvel in all the trailers but except for people already in the know I haven't heard much about it from my non-comic friends. Unlike the rest of the Marvel films to date.

Valid concern.

I think that despite a LOT of promotion via television and movie trailers over the past few months Guardians of the Galaxy, more than any other in-universe Marvel movie will require positive audience word of mouth to be a huge hit.

Simply because there isn't one hero in the movie that has name recognition in non-comic book fan households.

I do think, and hope that this will do well but I'm not expecting Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America or Bats/Supes type numbers and hopefully Marvel/Disney isn't either.

Not really a concern, per se. Just a curiosity. You're right that Marvel/Disney shouldn't be expecting the same type of numbers. Then again, Chris Pratt and Batista both seem to have their own little followings (as does James Gunn) so maybe all of that will come together with the word of mouth in the end.

I don't think the studio has high expectations for the movie, August is usually reserved for second tier releases. Though it is August first rather then later in the month so not quite in "Expendables" release time frame.

My wife and I both plan on seeing it in Imax though.

So are Imax theaters different elsewhere? They finally put one in here in Albuquerque and the screen is only about 10% larger than a regular screen and the seats a frakking horrible. It isn't worth $20 to see something there. It's my only experience with Imax and as far as I can tell it's completely not worth it. There's no additional experience in my estimation.

I just read that the visual design for the movie is heavily inspired by the classic SF artist Chris Voss, who eventually contributed art to the film.

Oh yeah, one can notice that even just from the trailer. The hawk-like spacecraft they are flying around in looks reminiscent of Chris Foss, but perhaps more Peter Elson. The colors of the Guardian's hawk-like craft evoke that old 60's-70's sci-fi art aesthetic of such artists, a motif that the video game Homeworld adapted so well in recent pop culture. It's funny how a lot of the Marvel movies (and even the X-Men films) appear to be mining the 1960s and 1970's era of comic books for flavor and styling for their modern movies. Fashion really is cyclical :)

There are different definitions of "Imax" floating around. The ones I have been too had much larger screens then regular movie theaters. I have heard that it does not have to be that way though.

Locally the Imax theaters are excellent - one is in a Casino so I don't go there (too smokey) but the other one is great.

It's nice to hear Stuckmans' review but he really did want it to be a great movie so I find myself wondering if it's that "awesome." I'd like to hear the review of someone who doesn't know anything about the comics and was only interested in, but didn't WANT, the movie to be good. Because that's going to be my perspective.

I think there's more reason to see the film than just one review Mommar. I've been reading some really positive first impressions and reviews from a lot of folks that share my tastes. I know very little about the source material and really only know the work of the director. I think we are in for a good movie with this one. Chekc out the slashfilm reactions post from a few weeks back. It's got a lot of good regulars from Frosty at Collider to Devin Faraci all saying this is a hit. THat's a lot of goodwill, at least to my mind.
