MechTech Posted July 11, 2012 Share Posted July 11, 2012 People would REALLY love to see the 1/5000 kits re-released because they were the best injection kit interpretations of the SDF-1. The 1/8000 Storm Attacker unfortunately is the only one in current production. I don't believe there was ever an injection molded kit of the SDF-1 in cruiser mode. Do check ebay every now and then. I've actually found the 1/5000 on there for reasonable prices (all things considered). Talos63 Posted November 5, 2013 Share Posted November 5, 2013 (edited) Wasabi-san, I picked up a Revell SDF-1 in cruiser configuration on eBay and it is 1/8000 scale. I'll be building it with a Bandai Storm Attack model I just bought from HLJ as a pigeon pair. I'd be happy to post photos of the Revell kit when it arrives if you are still interested. I'm not sure as yet which company produced the molds for the Revell kit. P.S. Love your avatar! *edit* I've attached the two photos from the auction. I just noticed the decal sheet is MUCH better than the Bandai sheet, which is missing the red pin stripes for the shoulders and the yellow striping for the 'ankles'. On the lower leg sections of the Bandai kit, there are circular and rectangular recessed areas. Are these supposed to be portholes/windows? I wanted to add a little extra surface detail with colour, so I guess I could paint these in white or yellow. I just wanted to know if they have a definite purpose before I do that. Talos63 Posted November 17, 2013 Share Posted November 17, 2013 (edited) Well, I've got my robotech Defenders SDF-1 Cruiser model in hand. There are no identifying marks on the kit or sprue to give me an idea of which company produced the molds. The kit is typical for a 1985 vintage model. Not a lot of surface detail, and some of the parts need a lot of filling/sanding to ensure a clean fit. The model was littered with sink marks too, which I've attacked with liquid green stuff and sanded smooth. The scale is all over the place when comparing it to the Bandai Storm Attacker kit currently available from HLJ. The Daedalus and Prometheus are close to the same size in both kits, but more surface detail is present on the Bandai versions. The body of the Cruiser is quite a bit smaller than the Storm Attacker, except for the main gun booms above the black recess at the business ends. They are longer in the Revell kit. The trunk assembly that the bridge rests on is completely asymmetrical on the Cruiser. I'll have to build up one side of the rear and sand it to the right shape. The Bandai kit is definitely the superior offering. There are plenty of recessed panel lines, portholes, and a better overall shape. I'm very happy to have the Revell kit, but I may buy a second Bandai model and try a kitbash to make a Cruiser out of it.given the tremendous amount of articulation in the kit, this may be relatively easy. The only major rebuilds will be the trunk superstructure for the bridge and the 'shoulders' to allow the ARMD arms to swing through 90 degrees. If anybody else picks up the Revell kit, watch out for the placement of part 21. The instructions show it behind the gun emplacement on the torso in front of the bridge. It is actually the arch that sits above the upper deck at the stern of the Daedalus. This is one thing that the Bandai kit didn't do. It is just a raised molded section on the deck and needs some tricky painting to make it look like an arch. The photo on the box top shows the incorrect part placement. Oddly enough it is shown in the correct place in the instruction section for decal placement. Left hand obviously didn't know what right hand was doing...
