Aircraft Super Thread Mk.VII

I can't tell a MiG-17 from a -19 either.

Anyways---I'd say this guy does overall the best LEGO jets out there---any photo in his Flickr account is worth looking at, here's a good starting point:

And here's his BIG B-1B:

Nice shots.

I never had too much trouble telling the difference between the 17 and 19. Telling the difference between a Mig-19 and a Fitter has been agitating.

If you mean fitter as in Su-17 'Fitter' then the difference is the Su-17 has swing wings. If you mean the Su-7 'Fitter-A' then the difference is that the Su-7 has a shock cone and there's more fuselage in front of the wing root.

So apparently the next full DCS plane simulated is going to be the F-15E Strike Eagle, and DCS World will have both the F-14D and F-22A as flyable craft in the future.

Also, a picture of a P-51 and F-22 in formation at the Andrews AFB airshow. I would have used something other than a camera phone were it not for the fact that my actual camera only lasted about five minutes.

To be honest, I was hoping for the F/A-18E. Granted there hasn't been a dedicated Strike Eagle sim in a long time and flying the F-14D will be a nice perk aswell. I'm surprised the only flyable craft are US when LOMAC had a more balanced approach. It would have been interesting if the Su-34 would be included as flyable since it's roughly the Strike Eagles Eastern counterpart.

Who wants an SR-71 tailfin to hang on their wall?

http://www.ebay.com/...625bd2d&vxp=mtr

Interestingly, #955 is on display at Edwards---quite intact. But SR-71 fins did get swapped around and repainted often enough, so it could easily be an 'original' tailfin of 955, and thus 955 currently may have at least 1 fin that was swapped from another. The infamous "Rapid Rabbit" has 1 tailfin remaining out there, despite having crashed:

I used to live in Murrieta, CA for awhile which is maybe a 25 minute drive from March Airfield, used to go there every so often and seeing that Blackbird up close is an impressive sight.

The Tomcat & P-38 they have there are fun to see as well.

You've forgotten about the Ka-50.

Besides, the planes selected as full DCS products(Ka-50, A-10C, F-15E) are done so on a contractual basis. They're produced because there's demand by the military for a sim of that plane. The lesser-modeled planes that are flyable in DCS World(Su-25, P-51Dm F-14D, F-22A) are there for the enjoyment of people just playing the sim like any other, although they are not nearly as accurate as the full DCS planes. Hell, I'm pretty sure the Su-25T was ripped straight from Flaming Cliffs 2.

:D *snipped FedEx image*

This list gets filtered around a lot, there are quite a few very funny ones. I'll have to find more, but this list is clearly not from FedEx.. unless I've missed something, and cargo planes are now issued with IFF systems and targeting radar.

I love this little one:

Control tower to a 747: "United 329 heavy, your traffic is a Fokker, one o'clock, three miles, Eastbound." United 239: "Approach, I've always wanted to say this....I've got the little Fokker in sight."

The F-35 has an integrated 25mm vulcan cannon except the "B" model which has that massive fan in the same location. You think they'll put a pistol grip handle on the pod? :D - MT

I've seen other debates like this but thought it would be interesting to have one discussed here. The F-5E Tiger II against the MiG-21bis. Which was the better overall aircraft? Both came out around the same time and both the F-5 and Mig-21 have been reported to have similar performance numbers.

F-5E:

-Good performance at lower altitude and subsonic speeds.

-Better avionics.

-More wing surface area.

MiG-21bis

-More powerful.

-Sharp roll rate.

-Good performance at higher speed, higher altitude.

What's a good game these days? Anything coming out soon I should watch for?

Birds of Steel on the PS3 and 360 is excellent for a console flight sim. It has a few game data bugs and the AI is atrocious in BOTH directions(it either ignores your existence or every plane on the map wants to shoot you down exclusively) but has 102 WWII planes to choose from and is quite active online compared to Gaijin's previous efforts. Also, they're releasing a MMOFS soon called War Thunder(formerly War Thunder: World of Planes, and before that World of Planes, not to be confused with World of Warplanes which is by the people who made World of Tanks) which will be on PC and essentially uses BoS as a prototype. However, it'll have at least double the amount of planes and will supposedly have custom skin support.

On consoles, the jet side of things has been fairly limited as of late, the only sim I can recall for this gen would be Over-G Fighters on the 360. Unfortunately the online is pretty much dead.

As I mentioned before in the topic, Eagle Dynamics' DCS series is getting a few additions in terms of aircraft choice, and DCS: P-51D Mustang should be complete in the near future if it isn't already.

Anyone here speak French as a native tongue?

I have been translating a couple of French books (on the Br.693 and the Surcouf) in my free time and although I have done alright with google translate, and babelfish, and various online dictionaries...there is the occasional technical term or phrase that manages to elude me.

I had a friend who took French in college and grad-school, but although she can help with untangling a run-on sentence, she was no help whatever with "cheval de bois," for example. Which as it turns out seems to be what they call a ground loop.

(horse of wood = rocking horse).

It isn't much I can't decipher, but any volunteers for help on these technical translations would be helpful (only on page 20 or so of the Surcouf book, but I'm sure there will be a lot I get stuck on).

We can always use more Robin Olds anecdotes, because he's friggin awesome:

"I met Olds in 2001 at a Reserve Drill weekend. He talked for half an hour, then took questions and answers. I stood up and asked him:

"Sir, you have flown some classic airplanes. Which one is your favorite?"

He looked at me and addressed me by my callsign. "How many hours do you have in the Phantom?"

I told him. (I have a lot).

He paused, looked at the floor, and then gave me the finger in front of 300 people saying "God, I envy you! I loved that airplane!"

The whole place erupted in laughter.

I smiled and sat down, telling everyone after I had never been so proud to be flipped-off by a one-star General in my whole life. I knew, starting with his tradition of doing so at the Academy, that such an act was merely an irreverant act of comraderie and admiration.

He was one hell of a fighter pilot."

Oh yikes, I totally passed up the DCS F-14 thing. Amazing, I can't wait for that, and it'll give me a good reason to get that TM Warthog. :D

As for the F-18E/F though, Janes did put out a pretty decent sim for that years ago, but yeah, it's way out of date now. It was definitely one of those that needed a thousand page manual, and had what I think was the only fully 3D cockpit Janes made before falling off the market.

Maybe not the best technically accurate sim, but people have gone and accurized it a ton in recent years.

so what do you guys make of this Amelia Earhart business that she might be on Gardner Island? The news is reporting on an expedition being sent there to search underwater with sonar for her electra plane. It seems they are basing the search on items recovered there's that date back from the 1930's. The problem is the English tried to colonise the island in 37-38 before the war broke out. At any given time there were 50 or so women there and the searchers items they claim might be hers are things like freckle cream, and a compact that could have been left by them.

I think the more interesting thing about the Gardner Island no one is mentioning is the fact that a damaged partial skeleton was found in 1940 with several odd things with it including. Remains of a woman's shoe. The group that found the body thought it was a woman, but a doctor who did an examination on the skeleton claimed it was a polynasian male that had been dead for 20 years. The problem is he wasn't aware of where the body was found, or what was with it. There's also the question wether the examiner did a thorough job, as he had felt slighted at not being informed of the body as it was being shipped to singapore. After that things get muddy as WWII begins and the Japanese hit singapore.

an air force pilot decided he wanted to test the minimum runway needed to land and take off again in a c-17 http://www2.tbo.com/...nds--ar-437276/

video of the landing https://www.youtube....h?v=l6n29Ie2f7w

I work right by where this happened and I can tell you that there have been many close calls with this sort of thing over the years.
