Doujin in Japan

Hi everybody,

Title isn't clear but i need to help or explanation about dojins:

I know japan people can create a doujin about everything (anime serie, people, tokukatsu....) in really few quantities (10, 20 or 50 pieces max) and sold in a special event...

Dojin ( b&w or colors) could contain illustrations, text, pics, like macross dojins (pics, genga, doga, layout, fanarts could be seen inside)..

So if one day, a foreigner person wants to do the same thing (create a dojin who will be published only in Japan) how does he process?

First of all, find someone in japan who accepts to help him...

By example, if he wants to do a dojin about an anime?

Ask authorizations to authors, or company who owns rights?

Find a publisher, negociate price for publishing the book?

Reserve a place in a comic market? stand?...

Many many questions.

Thanks to people who can give me explanations (especially people living in Japan).

akim.

First you will need command of the Japanese language or find someone who is bilingual and willing to help you (not easy to find). Then you can try finding a doujinshi group to join or simply start making contacts (perhaps either going to a doujinshi market like Comiket and speaking to them directly, joining a local college manga club in Japan, or simply contacting them through their website).

Most clubs will know all about getting permissions, creating the books, and getting a table at Comiket.

Keep in mind that if you want to do a Macross doujinshi, you need to find a group that's willing to do one with you or create a your own group or do everything solo.

Hey Akim, does it have to be particularly a Japanese publication? There are a couple of on-line outlets that would allow you to post a book and have people buy it on the internet. Let me know if you intend to do this, I might be able to get some additional material, i'd have to ask for the proper permissions of course.

Hello EXO,

Sorry for this late reply.

Well, honestly, i really don't want to have problems with kind of rights about this serie...I've seen several doujins about any kind of anime, sold in special events with few quantities so i thought this could be possible with Mospeada.

Surely i must ask permissions with owner of rights in Japan and after that, print it in Japan, like that, i reduce the risk...International rights are too bigger and difficult for me, and i really don't know about HG and co...

And i've in mind what happened to Roger...as if it's maybe different i don't want to take a risk...

It's all new for me...

But i'm opened for all proposals and ideas...

Honestly, i don't want to make money, but just not to lose neither...

I love books, artbooks and it's a pleasure, page after page, to discover artwork, linearts...

I really want to see a second artbook or an appendix...i don't think i'll wait for more years.

This anime needs a second book...i just try to add something for this..

I've access with some original materials and some first copy given to animators...what i want is just to "complete" the Mospeada artbook.

Of course, i should prefer to see a book with translations, with added value..

But what you said is very interesting, i need more informations.

EXO, if you want, we could continue by PM ^^

So many many thanks for your help!

I definitely agree that a doujin would be the most ideal.

the online book makers are really expensive so there wouldn't be much room for profit. I just got my 24 page portfolio done and it was a lot for just one book with limited pages. So I'm just offering up as a last ditch attempt.

In Japan, doujinshi fall into an odd area where copyright holders tend to turn a blind eye. Case in point: look at all the Macross Frontier "boys' love" yaoi porn. BigWest certainly are not giving those their blessing. Thus I don't think you should be so concerned about permission, etc., but at the same time I do not want to be the one responsible should any trouble actually occur. I'm just saying Doujin are usually fair game, and anything goes. Should you actually want to bypass the fanzine model and produce a professional, commercial book to be sold in stores, though, then that's another thing entirely.

There is a few caveats with doujinshi though. One of them is that - you can not use official artwork or images without permission. No scans from books or even anime cells you've purchased. The original poster says he wants to use Mospeada artwork, Unless that artwork was drawn by him or his circle, I'd tread very carefully.
