Whats Lying on your Workbench MK IV

Recommended Posts

I decided after 20 some odd years of an old hand me down single action airbrush and an old and VERY loud Montgomery Wards $99 air compressor, that for my birthday I would treat myself to something new...so hear we go. Then I decided to start adding all kinds of little decals from Yamato's SDF-1 model kit that a fellow MW guy sold to me to my existing SDF-1. (along with the glow in the dark ones--haven't done any of those yet). I also have included a pic of the photo etch parts sheet, which I am working up the nerve to try sometime soon...^_^

Nice SDF-1 :D

Masked the SV-51y cockpit today and colored it ... wasn't easy with my giant fingers. Here some pics:

hurr hurr, kinda falling in love with this plane now hehe :p

Need to color the gearbays, intakes and exhaust, then it is time for washing and applying decals. After that complete assembly.

Edit:

Here a little stick together

That was my first "real" airbrush, too. Still have it, in fact. Don't use it, though, since it won't readily hook up to my Tamiya compressor. Gee, funny thing that you can't easily find American made stuff over here. Not complaining. I really like my Tamiya, but the Pasche served me well, too.

What do you do when you are bored and have a box of failed / wrecked / unfinished models? Duh! Build an original space-fighter.

Kit Bash time!!!

@Reïvaj & Derex, thanks guys! The black viper took forever to finish after two failed attempts at buying custom decals online nothing worked (The white decals would simply vanish on the black finish), so I had to wait to get the MK VII kit and use some of its decals.

The MK VII is another superb Moebius kit, the pilot can be made as a male or female pilot & the head can be positioned. Best part is on the next wave of models to come out.... CYLON RAIDER!! :D

Next up--Finemolds 1:144 Falcon...I won't bore you all with the details (not to mention the sheer amount of bottles of cleaners, polishes, and waxes) of the almost 8 hrs that went into the taking the scratches off the main canopy, and getting the 3 clear plastic pieces ready...   However, I must say the canopy masks I bought from the Starship Modeler Website were worth their weight in GOLD! Highly recommended! B))

40th birthday today. Got to love a wife who feeds your habit.

post-12411-0-26320900-1314616722_thumb.jpg

Told her I was interested in building a big, modern fighter aircraft. Picked out the F-14 off of Amazon, and she surprised me with the A-10 and the F-4. Last birthday, she went in half on Macross resin kit, and for Christmas she got me a Tornado Messiah. Think I'll keep her. :wub:B))

Well, IMO it's not that the VF-11 is small but the SV-51 is huge!

@cwmodels: Good job so far :)

ADDENDUM: My wife added to my birthday haul. A 1/350 scale Battleship Musashi from Tamiya. She hid it from me because I mentioned that I really didn't like building ships, when I should have said I've never built ships before, so I have no opinion. Kit looks real nice, though. Looking forward to trying my first ship kit.

I guess a 1/500 scale Space Battleship Yamato doesn't really count.

I've got a 1/200 Yamato my father gave to me... I've been stalled on it because its just sooo much work. 1/72 is instant gratification; one month and you're done. This will take me six months at least.

No, he probably means the Yamato, sister ship of the Musashi.

Progress on the Falcon......cockpit done and in, drilled out fans and added resin parts, and pre-shaded for the first time! with my new airbrush..(which I am in LOVE with) tomorrow is painting base coat and I will also be painting my SDF-1 PE parts! I then decided to add some extra unpainted SDF-1 PE parts on the Falcon as some areas were blank and boring....I think it will help :)

^Very nice... I love the small cockpit! And I love the work CW... I really want to see how the SV and the VF-11 build up.

I've been busy with a couple of kits... mostly US navy stuff due to the ongoing Naval Centennial.

I've been working on a 1/72 Hasegawa F-4J Phantom

4d19.jpg

And completed...

A 1/72 Hasegawa EA-6B Prowler.

4d11.jpg

The crewmembers approve!

4d13.jpg

An Academy 1/72 F-8E Crusader... one of my favorite kits ever.

4d5.jpg

4d4.jpg

And this is my burgeoning airgroup for the last year....

LOVE that 4 seater Prowler! and I always thought the Crusader was the ugliest plane ever built, but the weathering and panel lining on yours looks absolutely great!

Great models there Noyhauser! The Prowler looks awesome and personally for me I LOVE the F-8 Crusader (This one is no exception).

If you get a chance Derex watch the original Area 88 OVA, you'll have a new appreciation for the F-8 when Shin rips the Sh-t out of those tanks with his 20mm's!! B))

Lazy Sunday Afternoon---so I finally attempted my first ever outing with PE parts on my SDF-1. This was NOT the kit, but the toy released first. Airbrushed all the parts first, then attempted to "fold" the small pointy ones and superglue them on. NOT really a fun experience.....some turned out better than others...but hey...gotta at least try! B))

Almost time to prime the Q-Rau.

post-12411-0-87184800-1315204905_thumb.jpg

A pack of ¥100 bamboo skewers really make nice modeling tools.

I say "almost", because there's a couple of areas I needed to putty, such as the hole I stupidly drilled though a chest plate by not paying close enough attention to what I was doing. (just above the foot in the blue pin)

i still have a little work left to finish on that 1/35 AS-5E3 LEYNOS and it's Faux pilot fig.

aside from that, i'll actually be getting my very first HASEGAWA MACROSS kit soon, thanks to a fellow MWer;

ha65703-3b.jpg

at one time, i had sworn completely off of fixed-mode MACROSS models,

but i've finally come to the point where i've changed my mind, and after living through over a half-dozen 1/100 ARIIs of all three modes, 1J/1A/1S types,

and one each of the IMAI/BANDAI 1/100 SUPER BATTROID -1S, 1/72 SUPER FIGHTER -1S and 1/72 BATTROID -1S, all of which i did throughout the 1990's and into the early 2000's,

i think i'm finally ready to tackle one of HASEGAWA's 21st century MACROSS offerings.

this ought to prove quite interesting... as well as a quantum leap forward from all those ancient kits i attempted so long ago...

VF-1S1-72HASEGAWA9-9-11.jpg

just received this thing a couple days back.

i can already tell that, while this is definitely the best fixed-mode VF-1 model that's ever crossed my way,

and it definitely does a superb job of simulating a variable-form aircraft, by early-2000's standards,

it very much pales in comparison to a modern meisterwerk such as that of the YAMATO 1/60v.II,

in it's precisely-balanced overall proportions, and accuracy in portrayal of an honest-to-goodness,

fully functional scale replica, in three dimensions, of a fighter jet that happens to transform into a robot.

in effect, the 1/60v.II has very much spoiled me for any other scale replica iteration of the VF-1,

as it is, IMO, the FIRST, and ONLY VF-1 replica to date that has been carefully and accurately engineered

as a fully functional transforming aircraft in three-dimensional, real-world physics,

with absolutely no compromise. engineered in service to itself, as a variable Aircraft/Mecha,

not in service to the ultimately flawed original early-1980's line art, nor in service to looking "Best" in one specific form.

in sum, to restate myself, all this has totally spoiled me for any other scale iteration of the VF-1,

and has totally destroyed my ability to suspend disbelief in any fixed-form VF-1 model

that attempts to fool the eye into belief that the model can transform when it in fact cannot.

that said, perhaps the HASEGAWA's new 1/48 version can succeed where this older 1/72 has ultimately failed?
