UPDATE:

Repositioned the arms on a swing-plate so they aren't so "up-front" and throwing off everything:

104_0052.thumb.JPG.16bf73065cd0018f3c12e54cdd6a56d5.JPG

I still need to address the covering for the head turret, a "midships' section cover and then start developing the "outer skin" of the mech overall. Battroid mode is coming along fairly well:

104_0053.thumb.JPG.5d902bbad483a825c6f2dd5b17d733de.JPG

Right after photographing this, I realized the sides of the chestplate are interfering with the head, so I trimmed them off. The head also needs articulation, but running low on Plastic Welder is putting the brakes on that until I can work a few issues out. Needs a backplate to cover all the mechanisms and whatnot, then once I have some stuff in place, I can start thinking about a gunpod for this one.

Stay tuned...

Someone who can use that keyboard can surely make a transformable mech with masking tape! It's looking good. Transformable models are tough because you do one thing and then find it interferes with another. Then you gotta start all over again... - MT

Actually, with the way my arms and hands are, the keyboard helps greatly when typing.

My U.S.S. Kelvin is almost done. Still need to do just a touch more paneling and then the hatches for the turrets. (While cool, IMO) I don’t want them deployed on the model as it disrupts the lines of a Federation Starship. Then some minor weathering, decaling and done.  I did use resin upgrade and photo etched upgrade parts from Green strawberry. Notably the nacelle end and bussard collector, deflector dish, and planetary sensor on the underside of the saucer ( the kit was just a smooth lump there with NO structure or detail, they completely missed it)

Thanks! All done with pencils, a lot of work but I like the results and am comfortable with the technique.

UPDATE:

Just a minor one this time, but I finally got to working on the head and did some improvements:

Before:

104_0051.thumb.JPG.edec5d4ecd817cc9d076030a2c4547bb.JPG

After:

104_0054.thumb.JPG.6593a6634663fc1b6270ff02363cf1a0.JPG 104_0055.thumb.JPG.fad76eb27873ec1ec6aab837485213e9.JPG

After trimming down the sides of the chest (will be doing more work on the chest soon!), I used the head that was there as a placeholder for a central "core" to build up the final structure. Originally, I was going to go with something like a "hood" (a la YF-21), but I felt this already borrowed heavily from that mech. So, I went with something a bit unusual that I can later "layer" the rear plane sections over to give a kind of hooded appearance without directly copying the 21.

Stay tuned...

@Dobber I love the details and the photoetch does makes a big difference! Your pencilwork paid off too! At least it will never "peel off." Is it just me, or does that one nacelle shot look like the mouth of a leach or lamprey?:p

@pengbuzz The head design looks cool! I love the hood design too, but like you said, it gets overused. I think because its reminiscent of Samurai armor.

@derex3592 It's looking good! Let us know how the paint works. I use foil, but it's a pain to lay down and it conducts so it can cause short circuits.

Lighthouse update: Last week I made a base to cover the marks on the blue base (used previously for something else) and the drive mechanism. The drive is a tiny gear motor and belt drive. The belt drive acts like a clutch in the event something jams the plane from "flying" around the tower. It is also dead quiet!

This week I machined a recycled circuit board with a lot of "meat" on it it and made the shaft and rotor to go on it. The circuit board gaps were filled in with solder and sanded smooth. The rotor is styrene with old motor brushes for contacts. The roof will be redone to match the new size of clear piece I used. And a GIF to put it all together... For now.

I got to say I like the rotation better than those model circuits that dim and brighten a light like on train sets, This actually casts light and shadows for more realism.- MT

UPDATE: while not finished just yet, I felt it was time for "first colors" (pre-paint to check overall concept workability and preview final look):

The paint scheme is a bit rough at this point and I'll probably revise it a bit as I get near the end. But here it is in color!

Stay tuned...

That's looking nice! I completely forgot they had turrets instead of phaser banks. The upgrade parts do seem to improve the look of it a lot.

That looks awesome! The lighthouse casting a bright light really does add to the effect.

Maybe he could put it on a steel rod connected to a motor, so it circles the lighthouse!

Thanks, but that's where the F-86 has to go.;) I like the design of your mecha. It has a nice arrow shape to it. It looks like it has a more realistic transformation to it than most designs which are overly complicated.

@MacrossJunkie Thanks! All this work just to sling around an F-86 to "battle" Godzilla!

UPDATE: still trying to develop a backpanel for the mech. Otherwise, refined paintjob a bit with an over-tint of purple and applied some markings:

104_0065.thumb.JPG.4f01a7c3a040525a454c87cf64528cd7.JPG104_0066.thumb.JPG.89b1a6f50ed5c4126720b1477c03ffee.JPG104_0067.thumb.JPG.78dfd99803dd0036f5fd0e934f8850d8.JPG104_0068.thumb.JPG.7efa2bad61e43c742ee69a00541ea0a5.JPG104_0069.thumb.JPG.27a76d107a0a196109f721746df3b1ce.JPG104_0070.thumb.JPG.63ee03938284ffa452186678b1454b8b.JPG

I finally settled on a name I like for the craft: "Valkren". The designation for it is SVF-74R. The "Omega" symbol indicates its' air callsign, taking after the original "Omega One" for the Yf-21 ( As a point in the story for the Macross RPG I'm a part of, General Galaxy is developing this particular fighter in competition to the Three Star heavy Industry VF-113 within the Macross 14th Colonization Fleet. Both will take part in a multi-fleet stealth fighter contest that the Unity Government has going, with finals to be conducted at New Edwards on Eden).

Also, this needs a gunpod; gotta work that up soon...

Stay tuned...

Thanks MT! In developing this, I wanted to go with something believable in both shape as well as function. Also, I didn't want a transformation that would take 3 weeks, 24 engineers and 5 supercomputers to figure out!
