Woohoo!!!  Finally finished, "... She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts

...I've made a lot of special modifications myself"

Cut in/recess cockpit exterior greebles

Greenstrawberry Photo-etched kits (overall + exhaust grills)

Custom lighting kit from Tirydium Models

Shapeways 308Bits Cabin cone and Turret well set

Dremel in blast marks and scratches

Added cabling/hoses to the landing gear struts

Other than that, its pretty much straight out of the box - amazing job Bandai!  What fun to paint!!!  Thank God for magnifying glass, my eyes need a bit to recover now :p  I wished I had a Macro for my DSLR.

A true work of art!

Can you take a shot with a Tamiya paint jar or another universal dimension unit next to the model? Most people would not know how small the kit is.

Yeah, I should.  I originally thought it was just a straight up out of the box build - because I like the painting/weathering bit the best, I thought I could race to that part of the build, but the more I got into it, the more detail presented itself and I just couldn't leave it alone.  One of the best kits I've ever had the pleasure to lay my hands on.

I should have done it with the Tamiya paint jar as you said, but I rushed it because I might be starting work up again.  Here's a shot I did but I didn't include it because the lighting didn't turn out but it does show scale with a penny.

So, I've been kit bashing GM's for the last few months. I think I've got them about as far as I can until the weather improves for priming. I just need to add some more paint to Barbatos' mace before I'd call him done.

Now, I'm thinking I'd like to take a break from mobile suits. Which way do you think I should go?

SDF-1 or Q-rau?

SDF-1 because I have never seen anyone build that scale...but Q Rau would be interesting as well, as I have that kit in my to build pile, but honestly just want to wait for Bandai to do an HM-R of it!!! laazzzy!!! :D

My latest...er...build:

I had some parts kicking around, and one thing led to another... next thing I know, i have this. Not sure if it's a half-assed battle fortress wannabe with valk legs, or a some kind of kludge-gunship thing. Maybe it's just some kind of kibble on a flight deck bulkhead, but all I know is it just happened.

Stay....um..tuned (kinda, I think?)...

Here's what I'm currently working on...Airfix 1/72 Fieseler Storch (1960s-70s kit).

Stuff done up to now (besides filling quite a few ejection pin marks):

  • Rotated cockpit floor 180 degrees and lengthened it. Modified instrument panel to fit new lengthened cockpit floor. Added rear wall and internal frame.  Modified rear seat to be more accurate and in position for gunner to use machine gun. Modified front seat so seat is placed at correct height. Added seatbelts made from masking tape. Glued control stick in correct position for wing control surface position.
  • Modded side cockpit glass parts to prevent really ugly seam right in the middle of a window that should not have seam (need to make new window later). Narrowed edge that is glued to cockpit sidewall to fit better in combination with internal frame.
  • Drilled out holes through which exhaust pipes fit, added exhaust pipes (still need to drill out exhaust pipes). Opened up engine bay on the front, added simplified mock engine. Modded engine cover to be more accurate as hole in stock part is too large (not shown).
  • Separated all control surfaces from tail and wings, glued them back in slightly angled positions. Added hinges on rudder and wing control surfaces. Added vertical metal tubes missing from wings. Replaced landing light mount because it was too short.

To do:

  • Fix bad fit of upper cockpit glass section, add missing window.
  • Add missing wing support struts and missing landing gear support struts (only half of the struts are included in the kit; the others are shown on the box illustration but were left out of the model).
  • Paint in North African scheme.

Well, the SDF-1 could be represented during it's crash by a Snickers bar then. :D

Hmmm, Snickers...:p

Great work there PB! The others are right, it looks like a pre-crash ASS-1. I may have to steel this idea...

Huh...I always imagined the ASS-1 a bit differently, but then again, nothing's really been set in stone I suppose.

Further progress:

Pengbuzz, that's some amazing creativity there! It totally works! Can't wait to see it finished.

Thanks! :)

I have some early pictures of it in paint: it's a bit rough and I'm not fully decided on the colors, but here it is:

Got a few more things on there. Starting to look kinda like a ship. It won't transform of course, but hey, it's at least something no one's seen before, right? Now i just need guns for the bottom of the "arms".

hey there's that awesome custom gerwalk keyboard again! nice! :good:

Thom, that gold is amazing: do you remember which paint / brand it is?

I dislike the Humbrol enamel Gold n'16 and trying to find a greater one!

That Falcon looks movie prop perfect William!

Q-Rau Kelsain!

Derex, I thought about you last week. Brewster Rocket Comic of two AT-AT's attacking ground troops. One has the bumper sticker, "How's My Driving? Call..." and the other says, "My child is an honor student at Coruscant High School." I found it on line: http://www.gocomics.com/brewsterrockit/2017/03/26

That's cool Pengbuzz!  I like the idea. Yeah, it could almost pass for the ASS -1 .

School is keeping me tied down so not much here. Working on two Mk-141 Harpoon missile launchers. The simulated connector rings were cut on the lathe and a pounce tool was rolled against them to simulate bolt patterns. You can see they're square patterns, but look round at non-magnified distance. HMmmm, what's the metal tube for...? - MT

It's actually brass! But gold was what i was looking for and it fits the looks just fine.

As for brand, it's Model Master Brass laquer, non-buffing metalizer. For airbrush only, it says on the label.

Finally finished the additional small wing struts. What I thought would be a half day job turned into two and a half days. I had measured everything on both the model and pictures of the real thing, then made the fatal error of assuming that since the measurements matched between the real thing and the model (after correction for scale) the proportions would, too. BIG MISTAKE. Made a first prototype freehand based on a little sketch I made...that didn't fit. I actually expected that one, the correct proportions were kinda hard to see in all of the pictures I found due to various bits of plane obscuring key attachment points. Made corrections, made a second prototype using the same method, didn't fit either. Switched to an actual scale line drawing to use as a model while assembling the struts, and that again resulted in something that didn't fit.:vava: I then had a good thorough look at the model, and concluded Airfix had misproportioned the main wing struts, making them attach to the fuselage 1mm too far back, which screws up the proportions of the small wing struts that fit halfway the main wing struts. Finally whipped out the CAD program, drew up various versions, added accurate measurements, and printed that out in 1:1 scale (on 1/72 scale of course). Then used that to build fitting small wing struts. Of course, one of the ones I build broke when I tried to install it (it's only 0.5 mm plastic rod after all), so I had to make a replacement.

Phew.
