Deadliest Warrior

Recommended Posts

Aside from "Whale Wars" this was my secret favorite cable program. In the US, airs on Spike - season 2 starts tonight.

Info.

The premise is pitting 2 warriors against one another, and they bring in experts of said form of warfare to explain why 1 warrior would win over the other. Test a lot of weapons, lots of stuff going boom... Some matchups from S1 were just lol: especially knight vs. pirate. I also get the feeling that the Viking vs. Samurai one was completely trolled by Tetsuro Shigematsu (one troll knows another).

But my favorite matchup was definitely Green Beret vs Spetznas. Damm those Russian guys were badass, the Americans showed up decked in top of the line "tactical fashion", the Russians just came in jeans and jacket, and totally ownd the other team lmao (honestly they could have found better representatives for the Green Berets... those 2 guys seem like they've been living the good life).

What makes this show great is its incredi-bad-ness, bias, pseudo-science, and watching the two opposing teams verbally chew each other out. Yes, this is the kind of retarded show Ghost Train enjoys.

Season 2 begins this evening with SWAT vs. GSG-9

I'm quite pleased to see this show is coming back for a second season.

This was probably my favorite show in Spike TV's lineup (mind you there's a ton of garbage on this channel).

I can't wait to see what match ups they come up with.

Although...last years Knight vs. Pirate was a little ridiculous...gunpowder kinda wins over all. LOL.

They're all a little ridiculous... It's a fun show as far as weapon-porn goes, but there's nothing particularly realistic about their results. The 'scientific' methodology is laughable, and the weapons seem to be largely chosen for their respective popularity, novelty or cool factors rather than practicality or realism. O.o

Yep, the realism and scientific-approach is indeed laughably bad. I love it when the evil narrator says "It's time for Max Geiger (sp?) to enter the data into the state of the art computer."

... the super state of the art software looked like an excel spreadsheet to me  . In any event, incredibad is the new good.

I love this show also. I never saw the spetznas vs green beret ep! Sounds awesome.

Spike's been rerunning the first season in preparation for the second, and I just caught the Samurai vs Viking episode again. The guest samurai's accuracy with the bow & arrow is crazy. I was a little miffed when they gave so much credit to the Viking's ridiculous double-spear throw. What a useless attack. A samurai would be able to take out both his eyeballs, both his testicles, and put a final arrow straight through his throat before the viking was even in smelling distance of tagging him with a double-spear throw. ...But I guess they can't make the show too one-sided.

Tetsuro Shigematsu. Better known as a radio host, actor and comedian in Canada. I guess we can add part-time samurai to the list. O.o

Oh I don't doubt his samurai skills at all, but his smack talking was off the hook. In response to the Viking demonstration of how powerful their axe was, he said something along the lines of, "yea sure, against your normal opponents like women and children maybe..." . rofl. The funniest moment was in Maori vs Shaolin episode. When the Maori warriors lost, the big guy went, "you know... the computer is probably Chinese too" - A+ for being a good sport about it.

But sometimes the trash/smack talking just got downright nasty and I sensed the "R" word strongly during the Shaka Zulu vs. William Wallace episode.

haha yeah i remeber the shaka zulu v wallace smack talk, there were moments when I thought 'someone looks like their gonna start swingin soon' when they were arguing about weapons and such.

I just saw that episode, and I sensed a lot of tension too.

One thing I didn't like about that episode was they weren't really taking environment into account. You look at the Zulu warrior, and yeah...he's kind of ridiculous, fighting in a loin cloth with no armor at all and a rawhide shield. You would think the advantage would obviously have to go to a Scottish Rebel. But are they fighting in Scotland or in Africa? Because if you're fighting in the blazing heat of the African Savannah, (and probably waiting/walking in it for hours before you find an opponent), all those heavy Scottish weapons and armor might become a huge detriment.

Anyways...interesting show for sure. Even if the science is questionable.

Weapons porn? Yes. "Scientific testing" geared towards flashy (and sometimes questionable) results? Certainly. But still fun. Yup, I enjoy Deadliest Warrior too. Spartan vs. Ninja was my fav thus far. That really would be a kick ass fight.

Yes, but the morningstar was one of the best weapons demos of the whole season. Just murder-ized that poor synthetic head!

And yes, adding the environment factor would just fry poor little Max Geiger's software program to be sure--especially in the Shaka/Wallace fight. If they fought in a cold area like Scotland, poor Shaka would be shivering too much to fight. And if in the grasslands of Africa, ol' Willie boy would be liable to heat-stroke out before too long.

I think if I recall the pirate got hit in the shoulder twice by the knights flail on horseback, mind you,and the pirate seemly had no damage like he enabled god-mode and all-ammo.

Another great moment: Sonny from team Spetznas lighting up a cig while his buddy tosses a grenade.... so brilliantly gar.

One thing that bugs me a little bit about the fairness aspect is that sometimes it comes down to the individual ability and proficiency of the guest demonstrators - whose own experience vary wildly from "Historian" to "Ex-Special Forces." Case in point being the rematch episode before the S2 premiere that pit IRA vs. Spetznas. The IRA dude was an "IRA historian." He certainly shows some good proficiency and knowledge, but when it came to actual running and gunning, he will simply not be as effective as a real operator (like the Spetznas guys). Hence, sometimes, a superior equipment will loose out because of poor demonstration skills.

... also I was disappointed at the lack of Pirate vs Ninja.

Saw the listing for S2 episodes. Looks like the contests will range from pretty darn good-to-just plain rediculous.

Jesse James vs. Al Capone? Can't think of how they'll be able to get 30 minutes worth of show material out of that one.

Nazi SS vs. Viet Cong? Wow. that's just in bad taste--even by SpikeTV standards. Purely for "controversy" factor on this one, to be sure. Who is going to show up to be the "expert" on Nazi weapons/tactics for this one? And just how over-the-top will the smack-talk be for this show, eh? "brown people vs. world's most infamous racist ideology." Jeezus.

Persian Immortal vs. Celt? Well, we already know the Spartans can kick the sh*t outta one of the contestants... "hey, buddy. Thermopylae." <_<

I thought IRA vs Taliban was somewhat controversial, but SS is really pushing the limit imo. It doesn't seem to be a particularly good matchup either, despite the low-tech nature of the VC and their tactics, the AK will probably win the match for them.

But yea, some S2 matchups are a bit weird. Sun Tzu vs Vlad the Impaler ... lol? Both were better known as commanders and leaders, more so than their individual "warrior" skills.

Just watched SWAT vs GSG-9.

I thought the episode kinda sucked.

The GSG-9 assault rifle was clearly superior IMO, but SWAT won that part of the match-up based on the team's speed through the course. What are we testing guys?...the weapon or the speed of some individual members from each assault force?

And then I got even more disappointed when they gave so much credit to the shockwave tazer, in favor of the GSG-9 stun grenade. I mean yeah, the grenade isn't that flashy, but if you're going to allow the tazer to be tested on a live human being then why can't they test the grenade on a live person? Put some safety goggles on him, and a cup to protect his junk, and see what kind of effect the grenade has. It's only fair. Not to mention the grenade is so simple and foolproof and can be tossed around corners and through doorways. They didn't test the accuracy of a tazer vs the accuracy of a freakin' grenade. But the producers were like, "A grenade?...that's it? How borrring. Winner goes to the ridiculous tazer contraption!" Lame.

SWAT definitely had the advantage with the shotguns, and the sniper rifles were a draw IMHO, but you could argue GSG-9 had the advantage in the rest of the competition.

ADD: One knock I will give to the GSG-9 is their hilarious helmets. They look like freaking Spaceballs!

I watched a marathon of that show yesterday, after a couple episodes I just tuned in on commercial breaks from Law & Order to see the weapon demos on the gel corpse and then the last five minutes to watch their result based on what looked like a random number generator with a half dozen weapon and armor variables fed into it determined by how the people demonstrating the weapons were at striking a gel corpse. But, it is an entertainment program, so I had fun watching them break stuff and then seeig the simulations. I found the bravado / bickering between the "experts" very annoying and really pretty hard to watch/listen to. Oh, but the ER Doc from LA was pure comedy gold. "I work in an ER in Los Angeles, and I can tell you that this 50 caliber bullet between the eyes that blew this dummy's brain out would really do a lot of damage to a person, I am very impressed!" LOL

I will bet you money that they are banking Ninja-Vs-Pirate for when they are trying to get ratings for a renewal or for a season/series finale

Someone wanna explain why in bloody hell they were testing 2 different classes of weapons here? That "sting bomb" is a room-clearing device. A taser is a crowd control device. You use those thing under different circumstances. That was just one of those WTH-moments.

Lol, the Tazer-array was fracking awesome lmao. Useless against enemies with good intel & brains, but against an angry untrained mob it's effective, though only in taking down the 1st wave. As for the balancing of the rubber-nades vs the tazer, I think they were both "special weapons" so comparing apples & oranges was somewhat acceptable.

I call BS on the assault rifle tests though, I highly doubt a representative SWAT team from the US would be carrying around the PDW, which is a relatively new weapon. They would be more likely to field a M4. Even the almost obsolete MP-5 is probably still in great use in any of the thousands of "special response teams" in the US. (I'm speaking for general knowledge and observation here, a local gun-nut on this board is welcome to correct me)

Yep, watched the first season. Really enjoyed Shaka Zulu vs William Wallace.

Now I'm wishing for Gundam RX-78-2 vs VF-1S.

I knew someone would bring this up eventually  .

Though I would think something like a YF-19 vs. Zeta would be more interesting.

Just finished watching the Season 1 wrap-up recorded on my box.

The Knight got screwed! He wasn't even considered for the episode because he lost earlier in the season to the Pirate, but the only reason he lost is because the Pirate had gun powder. To make matters even worse, the pirate was considered a "modern warrior" for the wrap-up episode and wasn't even in contention for the ancient warriors which is where the Knight would have been categorized.

I haven't watched the Knight vs Pirate episode in a while, but I remember the Knight having some pretty bad ass weapons, training, and armor. He would have put up quite a fight against the Samurai and Spartan who were selected as the top ancient warriors of season 1.

The SWAT vs. GSG-9 is on right now. Anyway the show is a bit over the top. Its more weapon porn then anything else. The Knight episode is one, the pirate would carry several pistols since he had the highest chance for misfire due to the sea air. Also the proof of the gun going through armor, what knight walks around in just the armor he has a couple layers of pads that probably would've reduced the damage of the bullet. The ninja one was another one i had a problem with, if your going to give the spartan his armor, then let the ninja has his (the ninja had armor). The show is interesting to watch in how not to test combat effectiveness. The best one was the samurai, those weapons are nasty and the callshot with the bow and arrow, damn.

If only the show had Agent ONE, then the title would have been completely defined.

I could certainly be the deadliest warrior, but even my presence couldn't make this a good show.

Last episode, Atilla vs. Alexander the Great was a bit weak in my opinion. The Macedonian Hellenistic champion got shortchanged by crappy weapons choice. Why would you bring an artillery piece for a small squad engagement? Though the horse archery demonstration was quite a sight to behold. Shooting a moving target while the archer is moving in a horse with a bow = epic win :) .

LOL, and sword of mars: it owns because it's made from something that came from space rofl!
