Worst Science Fiction Film of All Time

Recommended Posts

Just curious as to what other peoople find to be the worst of the worst in the SF film genre. My picks:

My runner up is Battle Beyond the Stars. Seven Samurai is a brilliant film. The Magnificent Seven not only manages to remake the original in a different setting, but it's a classic in its own right. If the story works in medieval Japan and the American West, you'd think it'd work great in space, right? Wrong. The film comes across as trite and cliche ridden. The re-used props and the bad acting don't help much.

Worst ever: Silent Running. Not only is this film depressing and silly at the same time, it's outright boring! I have never been able to stomach the entirety of this film in one sitting. I always have to get up part-way through and come back to it later. I'd rather put a bullet in my brain than watch this steaming pile of feces again.

So, let's here your nominations (and feel free to disagree with mine, though I doubt either will have very many defenders).

I'll start with some obvious ones...

The Phantom Menace....which is more life-like, the backgrounds, the actors, or the witty dialogue?

Battlefield Earth....hoark-fest deluxe

Lost in Space (the remake)...why ruin a completely sub-standard tv show in the 1st place?

Edit: Oooh I thought of the worst one for me....but it's more of a mini-series...

did anyone see that lame British verson of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?

That almost made me cry it was so bad....poor Douglas Adams

The re-make of Roller Ball.

The original had a great plot and a great message about how one man is important, and can make a difference.

The re-make was just a bunch of extreme sports non-sense catered to today's audiences who can't seem to get enough of bright lights and shiny things.

If they so much as TRY to re-make Logan's Run I am going to hop into my hamster powered space station and remove hollywood from the map!

Also Battle field earth

Movie=crap

Book=great

Oh , I almost forgot Ghost from Mars (or something like that) , starring Ice Cube (WTH is he gonna understand he ain´t a movie star ? ). This POS is the most horrible monstrosity you could ever let yourself suffer for, it made me want to cut my balls off with a fork and set them in fire just to have a light to find the exit door  DON¨T EVER MIX ZOMBIES , RAPPERS AND SPACE SETTINGS

I actually kinda liked that one

I'd have to go with "Star Odyssey," a cheapo Italian Star Wars ripoff from the late 70's/early 80's. It's not only guilty of being a bad low budget film, it's downright nonsensical. It's like some insane producer took a bunch of SW ideas, threw in some of his own crap, and tossed it all in a blender.

Thankfully it has NOT shown up on DVD yet, but there are still VHS tapes in print. Beware.

So many bad science fiction movies.

Yeah, I think I'd have to go with Battlefield Earth as the worst. That was just painful to watch.

I also agree that the remake of Rollerball was just terrible compared to the original, as was Tim Burton's remake of Planet of the Apes.

And Father Jack, I think they are making a remake of Logan's Run, which no doubt will be a steaming pile of dog poo. The original is a classic.

Runners-up on my personal list of terrible science fiction movies also include Phatom Menace, Matrix Revolutions and Highlander II, although perhaps that should be under the category of fantasy movies rather than sci-fi.

There are so many bad entries, and there are so many degrees of bad. Most bad movies I forget. However there are several that stick out in my mind, now that my thought train has skipped over to bad movies.

I really hated "This Island Earth" Even with MS3K's commentary I can't bear to ever watch that movie again.

Highlander 2 is also one of worst movies I have ever seen The acting, dialogue, visuals and plot were all beyond sub par.

Mars Attack also comes to mind. Yes I know it was supposed to be a spoof, but I did not laugh once while watching this POS.

Starship Trooper I am surprised no one has mentioned yet. When I 1st saw this movie I thought its 90210 in space! With guns! And aliens! And Bleh!! Never has such an adaptation managed to rip out all the worthwhile content of a book as SST did and replace it with steaming piles of poo.

I can handle cheese. I can handle stupidity. I've sat through Silent Running, I thought it was good. But there are two movies which I simply cannot sit through.

The Lobster Man From Mars.. Is one of the worst movies ever made. Anyone here who actually likes that movie should slap themselves 15 times.

The Ice Pirates. Some on on THIS board reccomended this to me, and oh MY SLITHERING FECES, this is one of the most retarded, 'DUPER CRAP laiden motion pictures ever to set face on the movie screens of this earth.

Those are my picks..

Hahaha I remember that one. Never saw it... I think it's popularity lasted all of what, 3 seconds?

I think mine would be anything on MST3K. Particularly that one with Thick McRunfast that had spliced in Battlestar Galactica shots and the Floorwaxer Death Race... That one really was painful.

How has no one mentioned SOLDIER yet?

Well I guess it was so terrible that no one even saw it.

Worst film ever, the entire movie made no sense whatsoever, and somehow Kurt Russell was paid like $20 mil for a movie where he speaks a grant total of THREE lines (I'm not exaggerating folks).

The popcorn that I ate during the movie was a trillion times better!

I have similar sentiments. I have a long list of dirty pleasure movies ;)

There are alot of not so great movies that I watch again and again because I find them entertaining, and there are many great movies that even though I thought they were fantastic I have no desire to see again as once was enough.

Wow no mention of Kostner's stellar performance in the... (in Simpson's comic book guy voice) Worst Movie Ever! Waterworld & The Postman has to be the most laughable POS ideas that ever made it across the minds of executives in Hollywood and to think the Wachiosky Bros was going to pick him for Neo in the Matrix of course Keanu wouldn't be my first pick either! One look at those trailers as I remember just made me want to laugh & throw-up at the same time but Battlefield Earth must've taken a Razzie Award, no doubt! So for me it's these so far

Battlefield Earth

The Postman

Waterworld

Freddy Got Fingered?

Man, I have a list way too long for this board on this category. Many are already mentioned.... Ice pirates, Battlefield Earth, Matrix Revolutions... Anybody remember that Sci-Fi movie starring David Hasselhoff where I remember one scene this guy calls out to his mothership to stop "time" so they all can escape from the planet before it blew up. Now that took the cake.

Waterworld wasn't that bad, actually. I rather enjoy it, although it's not worth the money paid to make it.

As for worst Sci-Fi movie? Not counting direct-to-video movies, I think the worst Sci-Fi flick would have to The Craft.

Hm, I liked Silent Running and Starship Troopers. A lot, both. And I did read the SST book (and played the original 1970's Avalon Hill board game) a long time before seeing the movie. I guess the key to enjoying it, for me, was to enjoy the layers of irony, which can be seen as a commentary on Heinlein's political leanings. It helps to be forewarned that the mobile suits, which are the most appealing bit of techno-porn from the books & the 70's game, are entirely missing. (At the risk of drifting into the political, SST could even be seen as a prophetic allegory for 9/11 and its aftermath.)

The Phantom Menace was horrible, but I think there were a few moments at the very beginning when it looked like it might be okay. For me, it's difficult to pick between it, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, and Star Trek: Generations.

Aliens^3 was pretty horrible, too.

I was going to mention Mortal Kombat, but I guess that falls under fantasy, although it's more of a nightmare than a fantasy. That last moment when the Mortal Kombat cast poses together made my heart stop....

Anyways, I'm curious as to why the later Alien movies don't fare too well with you guys? What would have made these films better in your guys' opinion?

Am I the only one who liked AI? I got the same sense from it as Edward Scissorhands (my fave movie, it'd be perfect if someone besides Winona was in it)

Anyways, of what I've seen, I really hated Wing Commander. Just, every aspect of it was painfully bad.

And if we're branching out a bit, Street Fighter is even worse than that. (Though Ming-Na Wen in red tights is worth pausing for, if you come across it at 2AM or something)
