No, it was never an official Japan release. Macross II was always a 6-part OAV series in Japan. I don't recall who hacked it up in the first place. I remember this "movie" version being shown in small independent theaters here in the U.S. I remember seeing it at the Key Theater in Washington DC. It's a fun little story and the mecha designs were actually pretty good. I kinda enjoyed too, but the dub was really awful. There were some nice ideas like the culture park and the use of destroids again. Kinda dissapointed the UN Spacy goes back to their old ways and hides stuff from the public, considering that it led their downfall in the original series. Anyone think that Hibiki's rather flamboyant friend may have been the inspiration for Bobby in Frontier? Considering that they're both hairdressers and all... And what's REALLY odd about that is Haruhiko Mikimoto professes to prefer the movie version. Anyone think that Hibiki's rather flamboyant friend may have been the inspiration for Bobby in Frontier? Considering that they're both hairdressers and all... It's certainly possible... though the few artbooks that cover him in any depth insist that he's straight, though his in-series dialogue leans more towards "bisexual but prefers women". Compared to Mac Plus Movie Edition which had new animation and a streamlined continuity it was a hack job. Any hack could make MII the movie with two VCRs. Kawamori hasn't seen Macross II, and I doubt that Risa Ebata was inspired by a minor character who only had 6 or 7 lines in Macross II. Uh and Macross Plus The Movie was written before the OAV and the entire time it was intended to be done as the movie. The OVA was expanded from the movie. That is not a very good example. Actually, according to the few publications that mention him in any detail, Mash is in fact a stylist at that salon (and quite possibly its owner). First, while I agree with you that Bobby fills a similar role in Macross Frontier to Claudia's role in DYRL and Super Dimension Fortress Macross, I don't think we can say the same for Mash, because his role is just too small. There were a few bits in the plot that make no sense whatsoever, the mecha designs were kind of crap and the music ( with the exception of the OP ) was forgettable but overall it's not that bad. I don't see where the comparison to DYRL comes from. The only similarities I saw were the attempted capture of sylvie&whatshername and the way the series ended. It was enjoyable for the mecha porn, and music, definitely action packed, but very light on story. Also prefer the Destroids over the originals, especially the Phalanx-II. The story was pretty good, too, even if it seems like a complete rehash of DYRL. But having next gen Destroids are the next best thing in M2. 'kay, I've fulfilled my duty as the leader of the Macross II nitpick patrol... now onto the content. I've always thought that the Valkyries from Macross II and its prequels were some of the best-looking mecha in Macross. I think the slightly more Gundam-like aesthetic really works well for post-DYRL Macross, and the clear design evolution linking all the fighters together, coupled with more logical transformations doesn't hurt my feelings any either. I'll never understand why people badmouth the Valkyrie II... especially since so many of them seem to do so based on the appearance of the 1/100 transforming toy (which didn't exactly follow the proportions of the line art) rather than the actual appearance of the fighter in the OVA itself. Not a huge fan of the 2nd Gen destroids, but the Defender-EX and Phalanx Kai were nice, and the Gerwalkroid was an interesting concept too.
