Hello, my name is Stick Bernard.

*cough acronym, not anagram cough*

Except it's also been said to be "TRans EArth Deployment heavy fighter".

Acronym, yeah. Sigh... worked two jobs today - the second being a very busy NCAA basketball broadcast. I should be in bed, not discussing an anime's naturalized and translated romanized nomenclature.

But I love it! Now that I'm broke after buying that Monster off of you & all the Mospeada junk my YahooJP proxy has been scoring for me, collecting Mospeada information is all I can do for a while!

I always wondered about the "DIVE" in Mospeada. Do we see Mospeada being dropped on Reflex point? Where doe the DIVE come in?

Military Operation Soldier Protection Emergency Aviation Dive Armor

I think that you could probably use the word "entry" or "re-entry" as a synonym for "dive" in that context.

Got you beat. I'm 33, so probably right in the average age of people here, but we didn't have a VCR at the time, so...

I raced home to hold my tape deck up to the tv and record the audio.

Yeah, to this day, I have half of Robotech: New Gen and Transformers season one still packed away in my brain, memorized line by line, with all the right pauses and sound effects...

Dam!! I'm 32 and I bow to you for that with the tape deck!! I haven't watched RT or Mospeada/new gerneration in about 8 years now, but after all this discussion of the toys, the series, and what we do & don't like about, I broke out the DVD's (My VHS tapes wore out long ago), I'm 1/2 way through, gotta say, I had goose bumps & chills, totally amazing to see it all again!! B))

So, knowing what we know of Engrish, what the heck was "Legioss" supposed to be?

It might be related to a military organization like a legion, as in a Roman legion. At least that's the first thing that came to mind.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_legion

On wikipedia, "legio" is actually a Latin word meaning military levy, conscription, army, etc. The rest could be there just to make it sound good. It's still a cool sounding name for a mecha though.

Yeah, "Transport Legioss Escort Armored Dreadnought" came from some of the Imai documents that I found. I've never seen the text in any final products, but I'm told that there's a scene in the show where it shows up on a display screen as "TLEAD."

I don't know where that acronym for "TREAD" came from, whether it's a fan creation or something else, but CM's called it a "TREAD" on the box for their toy, and Lansay called it a "TRED."

I always thought the "Dive" in MOSPEADA had something to do with the Gerwalk mode of the Legioss (Armo-Diver), or the fact that it was deployed after diving through the atmosphere, but "Drive" works well, too.

I assumed the same thing about the "dive." Figured, in the story, the second fleet had only Legiosses and TREADs/TLEADs and MOSPEADAs because it was all about re-entry to the Earth's atmosphere. The MOSPEADA was really for if something went wrong on re-entry (well, I guess not re-entry, but entry, since they were arriving on Earth for the first time).

L's and R's man, it'll both sound the same in Japanese either way. Buy Ley sounds kind of dumb.

I completely agree about L's and R's being interchangeable in Japanese. But for the longest time the community pretty much agreed that, reasonably, his name should begin with an R. Then "Ley" comes out of left field with no explanation at all, so I'm left scratching my head about that one.

From episode 10.

Thanks for going through the work of getting that.

My only issue is, to me personally, I care more about what the original creator/designers/concept generators had in mind, than what the final animation studio interpreted that to be. Very often you see the animators or episode writers completely butcher what the designers and creators intended.

What the hell are you talking about. Roger said Imai wanted it to be TLEAD and that episode is basically where they introduce the two other Legioss fighters. Even Jim points out how the TLEAD and combined with the Legioss to form a sweet fighter. That whole bit was just them advertising the new models.

Jeez, chill out there. All I'm saying is I would like to see some of the original line art that lists it as TLEAD or whatever, because that is what to me matters, and not the stuff that made it into the final animation.

Well, this can obviously only be resolved with a round of arm wrestling.

Nah, this is too important for that. It needs to be decided by a drinking contest!

I'll represent "Stig" over "Stick", and chose Guiness as my weapon. Whoever meets my challenge has to cover the cost of the ammo....

These are examples of lineart which I've found which, unfortunately, don't do me any good at trying to understand what the original name for it was. The last one says Tread, but looks to me like someboday wrote in translations of the names much later.

I'm really not trying to start any arguments here, just saying I would like to see what the original lineart said on it.

This pic of a toy was added by accident, and it won't let me remove it, so just ignore it.

Ls and Rs are tricky, why bother debating which one it was meant to be? I think we can all agree that just about any English-speaking designer would have chosen "Tread" over "Tlead" or some other acronymn that rolled off the tongue better.

Does that instruction manual state that the cockpit is supposed to actually become the head? Wow, talk about anime magic...

Roger said Imai wanted it to be TLEAD

To clarify, the document I found that had the "TLEAD" acronym in it was in Imai's files, but the content was most likely written by someone at Artmic.

I prefer the romanization "Tread," reminds me of a tank, and the design is pretty much a flying tank.

That's funny, because that's exactly the same reason why I prefer "Tread" as well.

Plus, the thing is so huge, you can picture it just walking right over a lot of the Inbit.

Episode 20 was a standout for me too. The man betrayed by his friends with the kick-butt missile sidecar.

That would sure come in handy in traffic jams.

He seeks revenge only when its raining.

Does anyone have a good source to order the new Mospeada Book? I saw one link but it was all in Japanese.

Being somewhat of a grizzled old fart that's followed Mospeada since the 80s, I seem to remember something about TREAD standing for TRans EArth Deployment, or something to that effect. As for "LEGIOSS," I think that "legios" is latin for "link." I don't recall LEGIOSS being an acronym of any kind though. It's been a while since anything Mospeada and I have crossed paths :)

For anyone who's interested, I noticed that Fan to Fan have the Dark Legioss listed. Looks nice but that's just too expensive to me for what it is :(

CM Corp.: BraveGokin EX03 Dark Legioss Pilotless type (limited to 800 production) 11827JPY

Click on his email link to order. Remember to ask for a shipping quote before ordering. ;)

Anyone here think we'll ever see a Toynami Alpha Drone?

Personally, I'd love to see it, but really really doubt it would happen. I think they're going to start doing Shadow Chronicles stuff, with Maia (recalled) and Marcuss (announced), then matching Betas with synchro cannons... and then who knows?

I wouldn't mind seeing a Beagle Super Cyclone (like the one in Shadow Chronicles, the closest thing to an original mecha that they had).

I am Mospeada newbie and was wondering if there are good toys/models of the Inbit variants with their glossy finish, vivid colors and big sizes...they are like more crab-looking Queadlunns to me (Rau or Rea, nevermind). Those guys (especially the cannon fodder "Grab") are growing on me.

EDIT: Yes, I know there was a Robotech/Matchbox release (somebody's avatar shows it)...are those any good? are there any other alternatives?

While there have been prototypes shown, I think they were just for toy convention display decoration.

To my knowledge, the only Invid/Inbit toys ever made are the ones made by Matchbox. You can look for the Robotech/Matchbox ones, but I think you will find more of them, and for much less money, when they were re-released as Exo-Squad toys.

There was a guy who was selling his own resin-cast Eagers (the little red guys) via eBay a while back. Can't find my contact info for him, though.

There was also someone selling a couple of recasts of several rare Japanese Invid/Inbit kits on eBay last week. Might still be current....

That guy on eBay didn't even show the AFA grading sticker. Nobody is buying that thing for $1,100.

You can pay $5-20 for the Scouts, $15-30 for the Troopers. Anything more is a waste of money. The Scout is around 1/35 scale, too, to match the big Gakken Legioss. Unfortunately it's the wrong color, but that can be fixed (see avatar).

I remember these things going for literally just a few buys a few years ago. Sometimes you could even find the Exo-Squad ones in clearance bins still.

I'm looking at the ebay thing, and some (let's forget the $1,100 and $900 insanity for a moment) are selling for $80, $60... the cheapest I'm seeing is $30.

This is crazy.

I would love something to match the scale of the Toynami Alpha and Beta (is that 1/48th, or am I remembering incorrectly?) and a 1/15th to match most of my variable bikes.
