Newbie Questions on Macross

Recommended Posts

Time for a new Newbie thread.

Okay the idea behind this thread is simple, you newbies tend to ask questions that are for better words are either easy to find common knowledge or sound pretty funny. You don't want to look stupid and we don't want to have mod a bunch of little topics.

If you have a question about Macross like,

" Whose that green haired lady?"

" What happen to Rick hunter?"

" Did Minmay kiss her brother?"

and other newbie questions like these post them here.

Ground rules

  • It's only for newbie type and short question/answer type questions about Macross.
  • When someone post a simple question here hopefully one the more experienced posters will tell the newbie the answer.
  • It's Question & Answer-format only. Nothing more.
  • Newbies tend to be lazy and ask questions about everything. If you can point the newbie to the source it's better than just telling them the answer straight.
  • If you see a newbie question about Macross somewhere else direct them here and their other topic will be closed/deleted.

The Macross Compendium is a wonderful place to look for answers, first.

Another question, I was reading mecha specs on the macross mecha manual(Mr.march rules) and came across the VF-1X Plus the 2047 modernized version of the original, I was wondering if this version could reach the atmosphere's ceiling without the aid of escape boosters?

Maybe I'm mistaken, but in Macross 7:Dynamite, there's a VF-1 whale hunter variant that can reach orbit without the escape booster (just with the booster pack). Even the original VF-1S are able to reach atmosphere ceiling, when Roy rescue Hikaru, they flew directly into Macross which is in orbit I think.

The VT-1C from MD7 did have boosters attached. The VF-1X is not capable of reaching satellite orbit. The update engines brings it up to spec with a VF-11. So a VF-1X still does need assistance to reach orbit.

I'm not quite sure but are you asking a question Gubaba? If so I am not sure what you are asking.

Enh, it's a joke that probably no one gets. Back on Gundam.com, someone once started a new thread that just said, "WHY EVEN ZEON ARE FIGHTING". No punctation, nothing. The member posted once and never came back, leaving everyone to speculate on what he meant. One person got all high and mighty about "useless posts," and another repsonded that he had been asking why the One Year War started, which is a very important question for Gundam.

My favorite response was that it wasn't a question at all, but rather an exclamation: "Why, even Zeon are fighting!"

I was hoping someone else here would get it (and I was trying to follow in the noble footsteps of those who asked stupid questions when the first Newbie Thread was opened), but it's pretty obscure.

I was on several Gundam fansites years back and I don't remember that one. It is funny, but a little too obscure :)

I see, in that case I'm going to say there are a lot of pointless posts here ( ;) )! J/k, but that is an interesting story.

Is it the same as the question "Where did the SDF-1 fold drive gone to?" ^_^

I just wish I could have come up with a newbie question as brilliant as this one.

(The poster in question hasn't shown up again since his first day on the board, almost two months ago...so it's probably safe to link to this without offense...)

I am new to Macross. A friend showed me Macross Frontier Deculture Edition back in March and I was instantly hooked :D

After watched ep10 of Frontier and reading everyones comments, I went and downloaded Macross Zero. I just finished watching it.

Since we have a 2 week break, I want to get caught up on other Macross series, but I don't know if I have time for them all. I am currently watching the Macross: Do You Remember Love? movie. What does everyone suggest I watch? What would be the best series that I should make a priority of watching?

thx

I STRONGLY recommend watching the original SDF Macross TV series. It's the basic groundwork for everything that's come since.

It's also a damn nice series, animation consistency excepted.

I mean, when you can say a show has an interesting CLIP EPISODE... they obviously did SOMETHING right.

No, you should watch the TV version first before you see DYRL? as DYRL? is the movie version (sort of) of the original series. It will make you less confused, if slightly. :)

What he said.

If you're already watching it, it's kinda too late anyways.

But I think DYRL makes a LOT more sense if you've seen the TV series. It jumps right into the middle of things, and skips most of the character development and background information in favor of more hot mech-on-mech action.

Not that this is a BAD thing, but I think it benefits a lot from prior knowledge of the series.

The movie is like a compressed version of the events in the tv series. But it has more quality animation, and less mistakes.

I would say

1. see the SDF:Macross TV series first. (focuses on the giants and their need to destroy due to training and mind control)

2. then "Do You Remember Love?" (same as the first with focus on the love triangle)

3. macross plus. Not essential since it is just a sidestory, but it gives a good backstory of how the early VF-19 and VF-22 started out and why human pilots haven't been replaced by AI. (notice how in macross they have no AI controlled ships like other science fiction shows? Maybe the events here made humans too paranoid?) It IS however worth watching for the cool dogfights and music. One of my fave's at least.

4. macross 7. But only if you want to learn more about the protodevlin (who are like space demons/vampires or the protoculture's equivalent to evil spirits/ghosts :p) and origins of the zentradi. Personally it's the most supernatural/metaphysical of all the bunch where SDF:M was more sci-fi. Poor battles until later on when max gets to kick butt in his VF-22.

5. Macross Zero. Learn more about the anti-un, and what happened when PC aliens first came to earth. This being even before the events of the crashed ASS-1/SDF-1 ship seen in the SDF:M tv series. The new radar system gained from technology from the ASS-1/SDF-1 allowed them to find the AFOS which is ancient technology from when the few ProtoCulture people who wanted to escape from war first came to earth and altered the genes of the native life on earth to start again. (this may explain why we look just like the giants and why in SDF:M there is controversy about the similarities we have to the "evil, bad aliens" which some higher ups refuse to admit :D. ) DYRL also has this similar 'origin story' where it's explained some of the PC lived on earth for a short time and submerged the city hoping to come back one day and have it rise up out of the water again to live on earth again, ...but they never returned... Some interesting characters in this: superstitious technophobic religious zealot (girl) meeting with lone untrusting-of-new-things pilot (boy) who learns to trusting in the power of love (the 'force' which deactivates the weapons of the angry god) saving humanity from earth-destroying death ray. Similar to DYRL without reliance on pop stars and the cheesiness of needing to sing and dance to aliens. :D

6. Macross Frontier. Pretty much a hardcore CG mech porno compared to the other tv series. :D What was missing from mac7 (the robot porn) is made up for here imo.

You'll be up to date if you see it in that order. Zero is really good if you like the idea of wanting an answer to the question of why transformation is useful in combat. The way in which Roy teaches the other pilots how to fight with three modes is the highlight of that series imo. It's not just that transforming is to fight giants, (which is why the robot mode exists) but that it is also useful because it allows a pilot to adapt to changing conditions too. Nora is able to kick shin's butt on the basis of being allowed to do things he can't despite him being a good dedicated plane mode pilot at the start. It's only after he realises the full potential of the modular transformation that he can start to kick butt. Valks beat destroids for that reason.

Actually, Macross do feature quite a number of AI-controlled ships, from the original series' Ghost to Ghost used by Luca in Macross F. Macross Plus just proved that human (or Zentradi) is almost as good as , perhaps even better than, the AI when it comes to dogfighting. :)

4. macross 7. But only if you want to learn more about the protodevlin (who are like space demons/vampires or the protoculture's equivalent to evil spirits/ghosts tongue.gif) and origins of the zentradi. Personally it's the most supernatural/metaphysical of all the bunch where SDF:M was more sci-fi. Poor battles until later on when max gets to kick butt in his VF-22.

My personal opinion of Macross 7 is this: it's all about Basara and how his singing can literally beat your enemies. :p

Well I was only 5min into the movie so it wasn't hard to stop. D/ling the original right now.

Actually, Macross do feature quite a number of AI-controlled ships, from the original series' Ghost to Ghost used by Luca in Macross F. Macross Plus just proved that human (or Zentradi) is almost as good as , perhaps even better than, the AI when it comes to dogfighting.

I meant like a whole battleship. Sorta like HAL which talks back and spies on the crew, or Cortana in the Halo games on Xbox who gets to control the actual firing of the guns of the ship and where humans can let them do all the work and the AI has it's own *personality. Not the small stuff.

This may surprise people but, apart from the deculture episode......I haven't seen macross F yet!! ahaha. So don't spoil it if there is one in it. I'm going to watch it now promise.

*ie for example ghost in the shell's tachikoma, the dead soldiers in the Rogue Trooper comic books in 2000AD, KIT from Knight Rider. ect ect I would say that the Ghost drones in SDF:M or the X-9 (without sharon apple manipulation) are not really "self aware" like say Skynet in terminator yet. One thing that differentiates the AI drone from AI which is self-aware is that if it is just like a human with emotions but without the human restrictions. This is a very common theme in science fiction where if the robot gets angry it turns against the master, where a normal robot would just follow orders like a programmed command you type on a computer not giving a poo about "feelings" or wanting to be treated as equal. So when I say AI, what I meant was a Self Aware one which is not obedient to programming like a robot, but actually thinks for itself enough to be almost like a human. If it is like a human it can feel pain, get offended, is scared so it wants to self-preserve because it values its own life...as opposed to following a set of sequential instruction or branching decisions in a program that merely simulates intelligence but doesn't act human or at least "understand" human emotion/behavior.

Since others have answered your questions, I'll just express my envy that you're getting to watch all of this for the first time.

(And two weeks is pretty ambitious for getting through the whole she-bang, but hey, you never know...)

Just in case, you don't need to watch Macross 7 for any relevance in Frontier, so avoid yourself the trouble... hehehe, good luck enjoying your Macross marathon on this 2 weeks break

A few weeks ago, you might have said the same thing about Zero. Who knows what episodes 15-26 have in store for us?

I am sorry if this has already been discussed somewhere but why are Michael's ears pointy like an elf? Is he part Zentraedi or something?

That's the most common (and reasonable) guess, but so far it's ONLY a guess.

Haha i hope I don't end up watching it all in teh next 2 weeks :s I just have a chance to get a nice head start.

I don't even remember why I started; maybe it was the fact someone left the Robotech Perfect Collection in boxes they left at my house and I had to remove the taint of Reba West (or Rebecca Forstadt or whatever the hell her name is) from my soul... but I started marathonning Macross series a few months back. I think I did it in about 3-4 weeks after sitting on complete series on my hard drive for ages. Although, I still haven't watched Macross II... and it took me a while to get around to 7 extras. Of course, that's with a full time job and classes 6 hours a week, and moving one weekend... but I watched obsessively during my free time.

The hardest thing about M7 is that none of the episodes really seem to have a logical conclusion, so I'd end up watching 2 (or 7) more episodes just because. And, the first 10 or 12 episodes had me really close to just deleting it... however now I'm the proud owner of ¥60,000 (~$570) worth of Macross 7 Remaster Box goodness, so... go figure.

Question...

What is the reasoning in dropping the 1J as Hikaru's Valk in DYRL?

I mean it is pretty iconic for the whole Macross saga?

Needed a scene with the armored VF-1. The VF-1J is well known for that.

Well also in DYRL, Hikaru was just a grunt pilot along with Max and Kakizaki. It didn't look like he got the junior squad leader role like in the TV series. Not to mention that in DYRL they all got color schemes like Roy's to differentiate them even more so from background cannon-fodders, so having a 1J may not have been as necessary (though they could have gone the 1J Max and Miria route).

All just guesses on my part.

Hikaru got dropped in a 1J from the very start in the TV series, though.

My theory? The 1J was a "hero" mech. It's main purpose, IRL, was to give Hikaru a different mech than everyone else. It was, in short, a Gundam.

With Macross being an established franchise when they did DYRL, they didn't HAVE to put the hero in a unique mech just for the sake of being like Gundam. So he flew a 1A like everyone else.

And the 1S stuck around in spite of that because it was badass. :p

That is the remastered DYRL DVD set.

There is a disc with the remastered movie on it and the rest are like bonus discs with extra content. One of the books is filled with various lineart from the movie books and I don't recall what the other one is (possibly a script book, but I'll have to check when I get home.)

This is the Region 2 release.

I have not heard of any R1 english sub version coming out...

You can thank HG and Tatsunoko for that... <_<
