Wow. Just wow.

That long shot of the carrier launching was just spectacular. I was kind of suprised to see valks parked on the deck there as it was taking off ... I hope they remembered to tether those suckers down.

:)

The next episode just looks incredible judging from the preview ... I squealed a little at that shot of the Koenig landing. The gloves are coming off, apparently, and I can't wait to see what happens when both sides bring out the big guns. Macross Cannon, Hashin!

I really love the variety of mecha you're seeing SMS employ. Right tool for the right job, I guess, and it seems fitting for a swiss-army-blade service like theirs. It has to help to be very flexible.

That little sneak peak at the Vajra ships was intriguing as well (rip, you poor NUNS CF bastards). So they apparently have a thing for red? I've been waiting to see some capital ship action, and I'm guessing next week's episode (which comes out when I'll be out of town for and unable to see until next monday! drat drat drat!) won't disappoint.

Also, did anyone else notice the Cap'n slapping one of the bridge bunnies on the posterior? Our HR made us do the annual sexual harrassment deal this week ... I got a big laugh out of it, anyway. :D

*Please note the following*

-Spoiler notice has been reduced to 12-hours. This should give early watchers plenty of time to download and comment without flooding the thread with black lines. We will monitor future episode threads to see if this should be reduce further.

-Those people looking for theme music downloads should look at the previous threads listed. I have noted which threads contain the opening and ending themes.

For whatever it's worth, I think the spoiler tags are a little silly in the first place. If you don't want to find out Vader is actually Luke's father, then don't read past the first post. It says so right in the thread's subject ... what's the point of a discussion with all the text blacked out?

That's just me, though.

Is the animation quality for this episode really that bad, or are you guys just being too picky? :p

Graham

I've got to admit, I'm normally not one to be picky about animation quality (maybe that's just from being initially exposed to so many shows like SDF Macross, Kimagure Orange Road, etc. which had some pretty subpar animation from time to time), but even I did notice some issues with the character art. I didn't have any specific problems with other aspects (general fluidity, etc.) but the more jarring aspects probably are when characters' faces look noticeably different/etc.

But personally it doesn't impact my enjoyment of the show; as long as I enjoy the story/etc. it works for me. It's basically the same for me with shows like SDF Macross and KOR - in the end, what mattered to me is that I liked the story/characters/etc.

You know, if I'm hearing it right (just got to this part on the script) then:

the Vajra have taken control of the Galaxy Capital ships? Buh O_o?

It's kind of hard to tell with the music and the radio filter they added to the VA lines but I think that's what they're saying. I'm probably hearing it wrong though.

Oh, Gubaba? This one's for you...

THAT ROCKS! THANK YOU!

The only places I really notcied a drop in animation quality were Nanase talking out the side of her mouth and Sheryl's small hands (well, arms, actually) towards the end...so I'm with Misa Forever on this one. But I drank the Yoshinol on this series at episode 1, so you can pretty much ignore what i say as the ravings of a bona-fide Frontier Fanboy.

Great episode, though. Although, I have to say...usually these "Prelude to Battle" episodes have a real pumping up feel (one of the best episodes of M7, IMHO, was the episode BEFORE Operation Stargazer, with all the cuts of VFs getting armed), but this one, thanks to the music and Sheryl's funereal Ayumi Hamasaki garb, an almost mournful quality...which I found unique and refreshing, although I doubt that next episode's battle will go as badly as this one's ending made it seem.

And yes, the Captain patting Monica's rear WAS INDEED sexual harrassment. The other Bridge Bunnies even say so.

And I know I'm gonna love seeing a Monster move around the deck as though it were a Cheyenne...let's just hope it survives a little longer than those poor SOBs did...

And...grrr...I hate that I no longer have Thursdays off...I hate getting to the party late...

You know, I really didn't notice any drop in quality. The Sheryl/Alto scene at the concert hall seemed a bit off but it wasn't that bad. So I'm not sure I know what some of you are looking at.

I loved the concert/launch sequence. I thought that was a really good setup. This episode actually reminded me of "Separated From Others (episode 43)" from M7.

And I'll agree with what was said earlier about the 2 fold boosters on the VF-171s. One to get there, one to get back. They do appear smaller, but that may be due to time and technology.

Oh dear, look at the time. Guess we don't need the spoiler tags.

I'm usually not too picky about such things, but even I noted some of the funkiness in the quality of art in this episode. That's not to say that I let it impact my enjoyment of the series - Frontier is rockin so far, so much is easily forgiven. I'd have to agree that it could have been a little more, but I'm not complaining :)

When we hold this episode against a yardstick like Ai wa Nagareru, it's hard not to be a little disappointed. But remember, the series is still very young (!)

Great episode,

Sheryl & Alto full steam ahead! Loved how that captain grabbed a hand full of ass, Kathy going with SMS is a nice touch to further the secondary triangle. Diamond Crevesse/launch ending sequence was great.. hopefully the redraw a few scenes there for the Blueray/dvd release.

The 2D art and animation for Frontier are average. I expected more, but its not horrible by any means, except for episode 6. If the rest of the 26 episodes looked as bad as 6, it would impact my enjoyment of the show. The difference in quality was, in my mind and by my eye, as bad as the difference with the outsourced episodes in the original series.

I asked in the episode 5 thread and you ignored me, if Frontier is average what do you call stuff like Golgo 13, To Love Ru and Amatsuki? Average is on par, Horrible is poo like the outsourced episodes of Kissdum, Frontier is nowhere near average and if you want to say that show why instead of just saying it over and over in an attempt to make it so.

Is Episode 6 a dip in animation? Yes of course it is but the entire show over the course of 6 episodes it has had great 2d animation, is it on par with stuff like Production I.G's Seirei no Moribito and Studio Bones Soul Eater? No it isn't but it's far better than 95% of the shows we get so how the hell is it anywhere near average? A show that has high quality 2d scenes like Sheryl's concert, Ranka moving through the forest, Alto fixing his hair in episode 4, Sheryl and Alto getting on to the train (how many shows would bother to animate Sheryl as much in that scene?) is nowhere near average. You might have high standards but I'm leaning towards you being clueless since you replied Eureka Seven when someone said a tv show can't compare to an OVA like Macross Zero.

Pretty good episode this week, though I'm still kind of enjoying last week's date episode

There was some action, though almost always in the background being shown on TV screens. Vajra look really menacing since they're attacking in force now. Pretty good that they've decided to go on the offensive early on in the series. Brings back memories of Operation Stargazer and the excruciating wait to see the next episode where they fold into enemy territory.

I definitely noticed a drop in animation quality as well, characters not drawn too well, perspective and scene all wrong (that concert scene with Sheryl holding out her hands! Her hands are WAY TOO BIG, she looks like Mickey Mouse!), though the CG was still pretty well done (opening fold explanation scene).

BTW, was it said that Galaxy was destroyed or merely being under attack? Also, can anyone translate the last part of Sheryl's press conference where she took the mic? Couldn't get the japanese there. :o

Man, those implants on Grace are freaky! She can just touch her temples to answer a phone call?! I wonder if she can listen to MP3s by yanking her ear?

It seems to me that the giant transforming ship in the opening just might not be Battle Frontier. Judging from the shots of the Macross Quarter, it just might be the Macross Quarter itself. What do you guys think?

All in all, pretty good episode. Pretty good ending there which I'm pretty sure is a sign that we'll have a different ending sequence next week! :)

Very rough summary of the first half. rest of it u guys should be able to figure out...

[square brackets are IMO]

Ep 06 Bye Bye Sheryl

Starts off with an introduction of the spacefold technology. It is a "dream" way to travel vast distances, however, it is not without limitations. During a space fold, there exists fold faults each requiring an exponential increase in energy consumption, thus this becomes the limitation of human/protoculture space travel.

[great explanation that solves alot of questions ;) ]

At Ozma's residence, Elmo asks Ozma for Ranka. Elmo talks about the first space war and how much songs and culture and love played a part in it. And Ranka has the ability to convey love... [Another homage here as Elmo does the zent dance like the trio spies from SDF:M, and i guess most fans would've paused and noticed whats on that name card lol... www.vectorpromotions.com that web address is not taken :p]

Sheryl is eager to prepare for her concert as Grace receives a call from Galaxy [OMG, cellphones built into the brain, implants r scary!].

At school, Alto holds on to Sheryl's earring. Mikhail asks if its a present for Sheryl and says that his "sniper eyes" have seen Alto with Sheryl together on a date. Alto denies, and Mikhail asks about the kiss, and later with a more serious tone, what about his relation with Ranka. [Why is Luca in the SAME class as Alto if Alto is his senpai/senior?!! and notice that hovering sign board in the background thats floating all over the place all the time...]

The president decides to announce to the public about the vajra.

Nanase, Luca, Mikhail and Alto celebrates Ranka's debut into the entertainment industry [at "GalaxyBucks"?! ]. Alto comments that he never heard about the talent scout "Vector Promotion" and everyone "attacks" him  . Turns out that Ozma reluctantly agrees [funny looks on Ozma's face LMAO] to Ranka singing. Nanase talks about Ranka working towards beating Sheryl (in popularity), Ranka having weird looks (surprised) at that suggestion. She probably never dreamt of competing with her idol. Ranka Lee fan club is formed with Nanase insisting on being No.1 fan, Mikhail gets No.2, Luca is No.3 and Alto... said he's supporting as well. :p

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/1518/ep06...fanclub2jc9.jpg

Nanase drafts a design of Ranka's stage dress [hmm Nanase has some talent in fashion design huh?], Mikhail adds some huge curves to it to "add appeal" . Meanwhile, Ranka's talking with Alto, and Alto said he was at the Zent Mall. Ranka tests Alto by asking if he was shopping there alone, and Alto lied saying he was alone.

President makes public speech about vajra, that the M-Galaxy is under attack and that Frontier will send help. [That huge red ship might indeed be M-Galaxy.]

http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/9118/ep...erattackvz6.jpg

Ranka in her hippocow pajamas is sooooo cute hahaha... Watch out! eating too much junk food!! Ozma mentions she is 16 now and will be an adult next year [!! 17yo is considered adult in Frontier!].

Ranka running to Sheryl's concert. I love that background art.

Mr. Brle has a third eye - definitely not a coincidence with all the indian mythology going on. It's only a matter of time before we see something called "Siddhartha" or "Vishnu."

hmmm good point. definitely lots of indian hindu/buddhist references.

though i'd guess Shiva probably.... the god of destruction/change.

Messiah is probably a reference to the Buddha.

This totally contradicts what we saw in Episode 4. IIRC, in episode 4 the cockpit of the Q-Rau was like that of the old Regult Battle Pods where the pilots legs did not sink in all the way to the legs of the mecha. But now all of a sudden its back to the DYRL style Q-Raus?

I got the impression that michel was calling alto "senpai" because he was impressed with how he hooked up with sheryl... it's just another way for him to tease alto instead of the usual "hime"

yes, but why is Luca in the SAME class as his seniors? Luca's sitting behind Alto...

dunno, maybe lucas is something of a genius and skipped a grade?

And yet he's trying to win Nanase which is his senpai....brave little man we have here.

I'm chalking it up as an animation mistake... shortcut. The guys animating this episode *really* didn't like to do character animation...

Good episode, I'm with Duke on this and must say the animation was aweful for me, this was a very important and tension building episode, and the poor animation it's horrible distracting and takes away from the gloominess of the episode, this is supposed to be a very serious episode but yet the characters looks extremely SILLY... oh well...I'll just take as Frontier giving Animefriends a little nod too, hehehe

one more thing, animation was so bad that it took me a while to assimilate the captain slap the bridge bunny on the ass, I thought he gave her a pad on the stomach, and was like WTF?........wait.......oooohhh....I see.....hahaha

Multiple Macross 1/4 class ships next episode?????

Look at the picture I have borrowed. The ship closest to the viewer has a profile that would seem to match a Macross 1/4 ship. BUT, the ship further away and above it seems to have a very similar if not EXACTLY the same profile. Maybe another SMS fleet? Or just other ships of the same class that belong to NUNS?

It will be interesting to see.

Thats the SMS battleship, Macross 0.25  The rest of the fleet are probably consist of Guantanamo carriers. Note that Uraga carrier may have a similiar profile due to the double hull on the lower side, so its probably some Uraga is also included on the fleet.

You know even though they've sent recons ahead, the taskforce is technically is still pretty much folding into battle where the Galaxy captial ship de-folded, blind. Lacking info about enemy dispositions and size even before they fold, talk about your tactical nighmares.

Unless of course they can still receive info from the scouts enroute. Do they have that capability?

And I was thinking "Why

France

?"

fr = FRONTIER

Uh, am I the only one who finds Kran Kran Giant Mammaries just sad? -_-

You said it...

I think that says it all about why I don't think that Alto will ultimately end up with Ranka. She is essentially still just a child. Sheryl is definitely more of a "woman". Unless Ranka matures quite a bit as the series continues to progress.

Taksraven

The Alto-Ranka-Sheryl love triangle reminds me a lot of "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" by Milan Kundera... & u know which girl the guy got in the end... (

Ranka type totally...

).

What really bothers me is what should have been a great scene, the end with the concert/launch, became a showcase for some absolutely horrible work. Its ugly, its distracting, and it was a real shame.

I liked it. & believe me, I can be very very picky regarding animation quality. However, the story here is the important thing. It is not an OVA... but a T.V. animated series... You can't say an episode has been a horrible work based on animation alone... The way the music of the concert connected with the end credits was very good & pretty different from countless anime of today. The pace of the story was perfect & really added tension for the next episode. I can't wait for it...

Btw... I liked the scene in at the drinks outlet ("Galaxy Bucks?":p ) a lot... they were in a

Thats what I thought too... I really liked this ep cause we've had too character eps now, and this one builds up nicely to our second major space battle, after the first episode (if you even count that).

I'm so psyched for next week.

It means thunderbolt or lightning in an indian dialect, but it is represented by a metal weapon. In ancient Japan, Monks were known to have used this as weapons for defense, much like the sai or jitte to parry swords. These days I think they usually use it just as a symbol, rather than the practical applications that they used to use it for. If you want to know more, your should read "Secrets of the Samurai" by Adele Westbrook.

Here's one for those working on the wiki: It looks like that Catherine Glass' birthdate is December 26, 2036. That would put her about 22/23 years old. ^_^ Looks like NUNS really gets those recruits while they're young.
