At the Electronic Entertainment Expo last year, Konami revealed that work had begun on a live-action movie based on Metal Gear Solid. The news broke via a pamphlet for Studio Kojima, the Konami-owned development house headed up by Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima.

"I have received many offers to adapt Metal Gear Solid. It has taken a long time, but we have finally settled on an arrangement," Kojima said in a statement. "False facts aside, a movie project is underway. I have finalized a Class-A contract with a party in Hollywood."

For eight months, the identity of the aforementioned "party" was unknown. That changed this week, when Sony Pictures Entertainment vice chairman Yair Landau revealed his studio is developing the project.

"We're working with the Metal Gear guys," Landau told GameSpot following his D.I.C.E. Summit keynote in Las Vegas. "It's a very cinematic game, it really lends itself to movie-telling. But the question is, 'How do you translate Snake's experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?'"

Landau also hinted the Metal Gear Solid movie may just be the beginning. "There are other games we are looking to develop," the executive said. "We're working with one of my favorite producers right now on an idea for an EverQuest movie." The producer was apparently of such stature that Landau declined to name him. "I'll let him disclose that," he said cryptically.

Besides the forthcoming World of Warcraft film, currently in development at Warner Bros., the Metal Gear Solid movie is the highest-profile game-film project in Hollywood. Previously, that that stature was held by the Peter-Jackson-produced Halo adaptation, which imploded last year.

let the cast guessing game begin

Eric Bana as Solid Snake = WIN.

But I highly doubt that and we'll get that focker Paul Walker or Tyrese casted.

I'm hoping Sony doesnt jacked this up and provide a big budget for the movie. Eric Bana is a good choice to play the lead. ...LOL Paul Walker ....if they go low budget style they'll probably pick up Ray Romano as snake.

Eric Bana looks like snake. I looked at the gamespot link and all the comments say Hugh Jackman. But does hugh look like snake? He did a good wolverine but I think Bana has a more suitable face for a movie Snake. Also snake is a calm killer who sneak up on things. Not a wild berserker like *rambo or wolverine. I'm scared they'll make snake into a wolverine.

Kurt russel should make a cameo appearance definately. :D Just as a homage to the original snake "call me snake" plissken from Escape From New York.

*I'm talking about the rambo after "first blood". First blood was the sneaky, stealthy, rambo who HAD to use quiet weapons to survive. Two different things.

Thanks!

I should've mentioned that I based my choices mostly on looking like the character and not so much acting ability.

Funny though how Snakes support team ended up being mostly TV actors...didn't do that on purpose.

About talent...I thought Eva Green was awesome as Vesper in Casino Royale, better than some of the more recent Bond girls like Denise Richards and Halle Berry.

I'm not gonna lie. I'm really pumped about this. I shouldn't be, with the track records video game movies have and all, but I am. I'm pumped about this and I can't do anything about it.

With kojima and his team involved with production I have high hopes, since he always seemed kind of like a control freak. I mean, how many times, has he gone from 'just producing' to directing the MGS games? PLEASE let this be awesome.

Actually that is what worries me the most... Kojima. His "directing style" has gotten more and more talky, preachy and downright boring as time has gone on. Heck, a large portion of most modern Metal Gear games are the player sitting there doing nothing while watching a FMV sequence featuring blabbing characters, grandstanding bosses and monolouging support characters only to be rewarded with a few minutes of play time followed by another giant block of FMV's. Kojima has really found a way to yank the player out of the game... I sincerely hope whoever directs the movie remembers it should be an action piece and they focus more on the "stealth espionage action" rather than fill the thing with huge blocks of rambling dissertation on world politics and the interpersonal relationships between a vast cast of minor characters who are introduced and promptly killed off.

I wonder which era Snake they'll base it off of.

MGS3-Portable Ops Naked Snake/Big Boss?

MG-MGS Solid Snake? Liquid Snake?

Do a stand alone story that's not really an adaptation, but doesn't fit in the game timeline?

Try to make one of the games into a movie.

If it's about Raiden and not Snake, you can count me out on watching it. :p For me, the Metal Gear series is about Snake.

That's kinda what I'm concerned about too. When the DVD comes out, I'll just hit the FF button on the remote like I hit the start button on the controller to skip all that boring preachy nonsense.

i was under the impression David Hayter looks something like snake?

this whole fan casting thing is fun and all, but fans tend to cast based on looks alone.

If you'd never seen xmen, you would never in a million years think hugh jackman for wolverine. who'd think a tall, lanky, kinda dorky looking guy would pull off wolverine.

It's all about the acting and imho, if david can do even slightly competent visual acting to back up his vocals, they should use him.

***edit***

yeah, here is a pic of david hayter: IPB Image

a little make up and he could totally pull it off.
