25th Anniversary GI Joe

I DO like the original Commando Snake-eyes over 'Mystical Ninja with pet Wolf' SE... even if I don't really mind the latter....

I like the costume design of the latter, the black body suit with the vents, but I vastly prefer the story of Commando Snake Eyes versus Ninja Snake Eyes.

And while they're at it, can they make an Ace that looks more like a pilot and less like an astronaut?

Amen!

Well, if we're going for a GI Joe wishlist, where's my USS FLAG? C'mon Hasbro, I need somewhere to land my valks!

Yes! U.S.S. Flagg FTW!!! :D

Always wanted a toy that warranted the use of a Flatbed Cart like they have at Costco and Home Depot

I could definitely see buying some of these. Snake Eyes looks awesome and it's good to finally see a well proportion Ma Duece (I miss my Ma Duece  ).

I don't know. Snake Eyes looks like a black version of the blue and red one from 1991 that came with the grappling hook, gun, and two swords Snake Eyes 1991. I always thought the original had a pair of goggles that was flush with the commando hood he wore. However, the first Snake Eyes I owned was the one with Timber from 1985 Snake Eyes 1985. At least CC looks more like his comic version by having a flatter facemask than the original version. :)

The first snake eyes toy had goggles flush to his mask but that wasn't exactly comic accurate, whereas the new one is.

The main similarity I see with the 4th version is the grills or vents in the mask but those are actually accurate to the 1st comic appearance as well. The 4th version also had ninja arm guards and boots....this new version is completely commando absent of any ninjutsu attire(a common complaint in the joe community is the fact that snake eyes is too ninja-d out, they miss the commando version(ninjutsu did not play into his story line until Storm Shadow was introduced, up until then he was just a mute commando that had a knack of kicking ass out of nowhere).

Ah, I need to pull out my old Marvel comics. B)) I haven't read them since I started graduate school :o, and I forgot how the original 1982/1983 Snake Eyes looked there. Maybe Hasbro will do a three pack of CC, Destro and Snake Eyes from the unmasking issue.

Is it just me or was there a serious downgrade in appearance in between the prototypes and the newest pictures? I might have bought the prototypes, but not the ones they are pushing now.

Oh well, more money saved.

They are just positioned wrong in a way. The photographer forgot the pull the heads all the way up. Some of the helmets were not arched forward all the way either.

Wow, it looks like sculpting technique really devolved in the last 20 years. The old Baroness looked hot. The first Scarlett had bad hair but a nice face and figure. Admittedly, Covergirl was a dog.

I'm disappointed to see multiple versions of characters. I'd rather they did more characters than the extra Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow (especially because the whole 80's ninja fetish thing was pretty lame).

Not only that, but the original protoype pictures were taken with care in lighting, which added a lot to the visual appeal. The newer pictures are overlit and you get nearly no shadows or distinction to features.

My one disappointment is in Cobrad Commander. Granted, it was an unintenitonal trick of the camera in the original prototype picture, but I liked that he had a large melon... something suitable for a normal head with a helmet on... but it's obvious that he's as much a pinhead as Destro... oh well.

I concur on the Snake-eye/Stormshadow second costumes as part of the first three waves. As much as Snake-eyes v.2 is sort of iconic thanks to the cartoon (even if I always preferred commando-SE over ninja-SE) and I have a softspot for Stormshadow v.2 despite being sick of ninja even when he first came out as a kid, I would rather have had Hasbro pace itself better with the pair. Even Cobra Commander could've waited a bit for his hood (and eventual battlesuit and/or big ceremonial version of his mirrored helmet outfit). I want to see what they can do to the likes of Stalker, Torpedo, and even a few more obscure guys like Airborne (who was the cooler of the Native American Joes simply because he wasn't a walking stereotype.... seriously, the only thing Spirit lacked was a beer bottle, a casino shareholder letter, and a button that made him cry everytime Cobra littered into order to complete the look  ).

The first time I saw the figures in this thread, there was one pose I was really hoping the new figures could do. It's this kick-butt Marvel comic cover: Link.

What do you think of my attempt? ^_^

post-3595-1184553083_thumb.jpg

I was finally able to find the 5-packs and a single-pack Snake Eyes at couple of TRU's yesterday morning.

Here's a pic of the remaining fig's (except for two of 'em):

post-3595-1184553132_thumb.jpg

I had to use a hobby knife to do the following to these fig's:

* Cut the trigger-finger from the rest of the hand so that the figures could properly hold their guns (Yeah, I'm anal like that. ).

* Cut into Destro's left hand so that he could properly hold onto his briefcase.

* Cut into the rolled-up parts of Duke's sleeves so that he could fully bend his elbows and properly grip his rifle.

Compared to the old-school figures:

* These new figures are a nice update and homage to the old-school figures.

* A lot of the guns, knives, and other trinkets that were molded on the old-school figures now come as separate accessories.

* The figures do have more points of articulation than the old-school figures and are comparable to the super-articulated figures from the Star Wars lines.

* However, on some of the figures, the hip joints are more limited than the old-school figures. Most of the figures can't sit down properly without slouching or having their knees wide apart. This is especially bad with the female figures (unless you're...umm....going for some "suggestive" poses.....:lol: ).

* The female figures also have this weird tendancy where their necks are molded as leaning forward.

* The hands are made of much softer plastic than the old-school figures, so some figures can't grip weapons as tightly as you would like.

* This is also compounded by most weapons having a trigger guard and the figures not having separated trigger-fingers.

* I've read some reviews of people complaining that some figures' elbows can't bend a full 90 degrees. Other than Duke, I've found this NOT to be the case. Just look at the pic above of Gung-Ho; If you sorta push his elbows back while bending it, you should be able to get it to that a 90 degree position (WITHOUT any sort of modifications or cutting).

Personally, I would have preferred it if the new figures had ball-jointed knees, rather than the double-jointed knees some of the fig's have (The ball-joint just gives more poseability options).

But overall, these are cool figures. They do some things better than the old-school figures, but you need to go in realizing that they also do some things WORSE than the old figures. As long as you're aware of their flaws and have a little patience in posing 'em, they should be a welcome addition to your display shelves.

Lastly, let me just say that Commando Snakes Eyes = BAD-ASS MOFO!! B))

Hot dang, 1st gen Snake Eyes aka Commando SE is just cool looking. That's the version I was never able to get as a kid and want from the 2th anniv. series.

^^Personally, I think there's enough room for both versions of the Joe's resident bad-ass.

Besides, I really don't associate V2 Snake Eyes as being all ninja'd out. I mean the guy's still packing his trusty uzi in his V2 get-up.

I'll say more tomorrow but if you guys dig form over function, or a good balance, you'll dig these. Its hard for me to put the new v2 Snake Eyes down. It turned out a lot better than I thought it would. Very impressive. There is no scabbard, but his sword does fit beneath his bandolier and does not fall out due to the hilt. Basically just arrange it like it is on the card art. Not sure if any of you noticed, but some of the art was altered to match the figures. Small differences here and there.

Basically these figures do have more articulation than their 20+ year old counterparts but less range of motion in some areas, most notably the hips. However the sculpts are the biggest improvements. They resemble the star wars figures sculpts a lot, and I would not be surprised if the same sculptors worked on both lines, as many things carry over. Before, star wars figures always placed sculpt over articulation. The super articulated figures came out, but still lacked the ball hip mobility of the gijoe figures. Presently they still do. The gijoe line always had it the other way around, and this anniversary line is a balance of the 2.

I like the ones I have(single pack stormshadow and snakeeyes). Storm shadow turns out great, this was to be expected. Snake eyes was the sleeper surprise this time around. BTW you can also store his gun between his torso and bandolier on the front, just make sure the back handle is above the grenades.

Looking through all those toys reminded me as to why I love the Joe filecards. More than the TF techspecs, the filecards give an entire story for each character in just a few paragraphs. Perhaps is my chronically over-active imagination at work, but whenever I read one I can sit back and just see how those characters and stories can look and take shape.

More than the toys themselves, I go for the cards :)

Man... they all look like they are wearing nappies... especially Cobra Commander. lol these are pathetic.

Snake Eyes is the best out of all of em. Bringing back memories as a kid this is...

Who mentioned about the USS Flagg?

I remember seeing that in it's HUMONGOUS box for sale in a toy store back in the day.

Ohh, my favvvCobra vehicle was the Night Raven. If only i kept it in good nick... sigh stupid kid.

It was huge, i had a tonne os fun with that. Beautiful. Wow so long ago.

Will they be available in local stores such as Toysrus or Walmart?

Oh, they're already available at TRU (that's where I found all of the ones I bought).

The hard part will be actually finding them. As I said in a thread down in the "Where to Buy Macross, Auctions & Dealers Specials" section, it's a bit of a crapshoot trying to find 'em. And I'm unsure how often or how much these stores are gonna replenish their supply.

Some folks have reported finding the figures also at Walmart, but I personally haven't found them there yet. Also, some folks are speculating that Target will eventually have these once they have a "reset" sometime in early August.

Not sure if any of you noticed, but some of the art was altered to match the figures. Small differences here and there.

Yeah, I originally thought Flint's shotgun looked different. But it wasn't until I looked at his original file card (still have 'em after all these years :D ) that I had positive proof of the change.

some people are finding them at Walmart?.....every so often i check both Walmart and Target and neither one has ever got any G.I. Joe stuff with the exception of Sigma 6 disporpotioned crap. (i would actually like it if it were properly scaled at 3 3/4 action figure size) So far Toys R Us and Kmart are the only stores carrying 25th Anniversary Figures, but Kmart is charging 6.99 or 7.99 for each figure. Looks like these are starting to get thrown up on Ebay....

does anyone know if the commando snake eyes and ninja storm shadow will be packaged individually?

Even though Snake eyes comes with a sword from a previous joe line, I think its cool that it was a sword exclusively made for a previous Snake eyes figure and never included with anyone but Snake Eyes.

These are hitting stores now. Select walmarts that were doing early xmas endcap displays to guage fall/xmas product interest have them. If your local walmarts do not have these yet, they will in august(the walmarts that did this had their displays up by the 14th, and Denver, Colorado had the first shipments). TRU and Kmart are getting their joes in now. Target is having a modular reset on august 5th with the joes.

We got some DCPI/SKN numbers yesterday@hisstank.com from Shogi. Here they are:

TARGET: (DCPI)

5 packs 087-06-1908

Singles 087-06-0021

TRU: (SKN)

5 packs 886820

Singles 886790

065356926757 (Cobra 5 pack UPC #)

065356926758 (Joe 5 pack UPC #)

Comic packs w/2 figures and a comic will also be appearing for $9.99. Box presentation will resemble the star wars comic packs. Storm Shadow and Snake eyes will be in the issue #21 pack, Scarlett and Hawk in the issue #1 pack.

In my opinion a good balance between sculpt and articulation has been achieved.
