Then why say "Sin City, anyone?" as if the producers did something bad by releasing a barebones release when it was widely announced (as you yourself knew) that a better edition was coming?

It just doesn't make sense.

If you're going to complain about something, actually make the point of what you are complaining about and people might understand you. I detest the "double-dipping" bonanza on DVDs, I merely suggested that Sin City was a bad example.

Saying "Terminator 2: Extreme Edition anyone?" might have actually made sense.

No offense towards you was ever intended. And thatnks for the rudimentary understanding of supply and demand.

If playing well with others means not making sense, then by all means, rock on.

Because when someone doesn't understand something, they typically respond rationally...they ask.

Throwing some condescending, misdirected tirade at me is hardly the way to convince me that "no offense was intended."

I am displeased with the way in which Sin City was released and the lengthy wait for a proper edition. Concurrent bare-bones/special edition releases on DVD seem to be no problem for many titles. Even more, some titles are only released in a special-features filled format. Sin City's release was the most recent I've experienced so it made a good example, hence "Sin City anyone?"

I like Serenity so much that I have no problem with buying the initial bare-bones DVD release and then also buying the uber-super-extended-recut-directors-cut-remixed-unrated-special-dance-mix edition when it invariably comes out.

I want Joss Whedon to make more Firefly movies, so the way I look at it is, if I can support the franchise by buying more of the DVDs there's a greater chance that a sequel will get the green light.

Given the extensive library of film that I adore as much or more than Serenity, such a policy isn't "economically viable" for me :)

I'm happy with my Serenity Visual Companion Book for now... really... I am! :(

If 'Companion' in Serenity = prostitute.

Does 'Visual Companion Book' = porn magazine? :p

Or they "misunderstand". It happens so often now that they've even made a word for it. Which was the case here.

The comment was to explain that the tirade was not at you, personally. But whatever. I can see what you mean, so my apologies.

Maybe I'm an old fart but I think an 8 month turnaround is pretty speedy for a features-laden, multi-disc special edition. But I guess that's in the eye of the beholder.

Personally, I have no problem at all with the "barebones first" mentality, as long as the SE is known to be forthcoming. I mean, I don't expect the average Blockbuster renter to want to see a 3-1/2 documentary or 6 sets of commentary when they rent a movie - thus the barebones release makes sense for rental and less "cinema afficianado" buyers.

What I do hate is when they just constantly keep re-releasing the same movie over and over again in an obvious attempt to pillage whatever fanbase the movie has.

Fair enough. We're good.

DVD release dates don't typically bother me all that much, since films usually are released quickly. I personally prefer DVD releases within 4-6 months after theatrical release. I was getting anxious over Sin City, which took 9 months for a proper DVD (theatres April 1st, DVD Recut-Extended December 13th) and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which took 7 months (theatres June 10th, DVD December).

Concurrent releases are the way to go in my mind, otherwise the studios have a tendancy to put off the special editions becuase the "already available" barebones DVD grants them a fan buffer. This situation also plays upon the impatience of waiting fans, fans who are often convinced to purchase a substandard DVD just to own the film until a full release is sold.

Of course, this will all be a mute point if Soderbergh's new film is a hit, since it'll be available in theatres, pay-per-view, and DVD simultaenously. Could become the new model for film release, if it can succeed and survive the "old guard" :)

Damn, you know you're hooked into something bad when you go from a single news post to a google search for DVD retailers downunder, to pre-ordering, to waiting for Feburary all in the space of about five minutes.

Well, what am I gonna do with my R1 copy once the Auzzie one comes?

"Convert," I hear you say. Say, now there's a plan. ;)

Hey all, old post now but figured I would wade in.

I saw the movie first, never saw the show on TV over here in the UK.

Movie was brilliant, I love the whole space western thing. And Kayleigh, or Kaylee I think Im in love with her.

For Xmas this year my bro bought me the TV series on DVD!, Just finished watching it and it rocks!!

Loved pretty much every episode!!!!

I do hope they make more but we dont have much say on things like that over here in UK :(

Saw it the other day....as far as space movies goes I'll give it a 7 out of 10. I could see that there is some stuff I probably would have gotten more if I saw the show on tv. Nevertheless it wasn't so bad. Riddick was better imo.

Interesting, the box art for the Australian DVD appears to be the same as the movie posters displayed in UK cinemas (I saw the movie while on holiday in UK).

Question for US fans, what pic was used for the US theatrical poster?

Graham

Most memorable quote from Serenity has to be Kaylee's line: -

"Goin' on a year now I ain't had nothin' twixt my nethers weren't run on batteries!"

:p :P :p

Graham

356102

That was awesome!! The Doc is a luck man.

Can anybody tell me what the handgun is that Mal uses in the TV series & movie?

Is it a real gun or something made up?

Been trying to find out, but without luck so far.

Graham

356153

I'm pretty sure it was an old percussion revolver they dressed up...like this Rogers and Spencer:

In regards to the success of SERENITY at the box office, Whedon said "Ultimately, what didn't happen is that we didn't really manage to get a sense of the movie out to people. But that's a hard thing to do; it's a weird movie. And, you know, it crosses a lot of genres, and it's not an easy sell. ... Who knows? Ultimately, you can't really point the finger -- I mean, I'm sure there's plenty of people who are pointing plenty of fingers in every direction -- but it's just a crapshoot."

In terms of a Firefly/Serenity franchise, Whedon offerd, "The best-case scenario is that the DVD is such a spectacular, monster hit that we get to make another movie. Then, we get to make another movie. After three movies, we're all very tired. After Serenity: Revolutions, we feel like we've played it out. And then we make another series.

But, you know, we'll never make Firefly again, because that was a thing that existed and is now gone. "

Mal's pistol is a custom job done by the practical FX company (don't remember their name) Its a cast body with a cheapo Taurus revolver hidden inside. The resemblence to the Rogers & Spencer isn't accidental, since Whedon wanted Mal's pistol to resemble a civil war handgun.

OK, it makes sense now....wonder why they didn't just use an old cast percussion one in the first place. :D
