Wonder why they'd do that instead of trying to auction it off somewhere.

Accounting reasons most likely. The film did such a pathetic gross (might not have even made back it's total production and marketing costs even adding in DVD sales) that is was less financial trouble to trash the props and take them as a loss then to try and auction them off and possibly make a small profit - and then not be able to take the tax writeoff.

if they would have just let it run, it would have been done by now and they would have been selling tons of DVD sets and the susequent Bluray re-release.

Ditto!!

I bought a DVD box set of the Firefly series even though I knew it was unfinished, never bother normally. If the networks kill it I dont buy it.

There are far far worse series's on T.V and DVD etc that should never have made it past episode 3, some of them are into multi series in length, some of them started great and now are just dead Donkeys being flogged by T.V exects.

Shoulda finished it. IMO
