"Global" or "Gloval"?

Hurin

Recommended Posts

Guys, I'm fixing a problem with ranks that I made in the DYRL subtitle project. And while at it, I might as well address another nagging question I've had:

Is it Captain/Admiral Global or Gloval?

I've seen semi-official pages say both. And we seem to not be as picky about this around here as we are with a lot of other character names.

Currently, the subs use "Gloval". . . and I think it sounds less jarring to the western/english ear. But, if it's definitely Global, I'll change it.

Oh, and the Compendium goes with Global.

What's the consensus. . . or is there one?

BW refers to him as Captain Gloval in thier list of copyrighted items on thier site but the compendium calls him Global. The compendium also refers to his job as Admiral and his rank as Brigadier General.

Thats because the Ranks in SDFM and DYRL are different, as Hurin found out earlier today. ;)

Also, (and adding more confusion) there is no corresponding character in Hiragana or Katakana for the letter "V", so names with V would traditionally be pronounced with "B".

So, it could be either one...

So, in DYRL:

Hikaru is 2nd Lieutenant. Then is promoted to 1st Lieutenant when he returns to the Macross after exploring the devastated earth.

Misa: She is Captain at beginning and Major after returning to the Macross.

Global: What should he be? (Navy) Captain (probably not since it would mistakenly make him look to be of same rank to Misa), Admiral, Commander, Brig General, or Colonel? And does it change as the movie progresses? I'm thinking Admiral only because it is the one that will make most sense in context to an English-speaking audience. Saying he's only a Commander or Captain will be confusing since people will hear that Misa is an (army) captain and possibly consider them equals!

Here's a site that may only add to anyone's confusion! :)

Well, the problem with Global (Gloval) AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH! ;)

Is that you enter into the realm of actual vs positional rank. An Admiral can hold the pay grade of Admiral, but be in command of a vessel, and therefore be referred to as "Captain."

Along the same lines, an officer ranking lower than Captain, can be in command of a vessel, and as such, be referred to as "Captain".

So, though in DYRL, Global is a Brigadier General, he would likely be referred to as Captain.

Not to confuse things further, but Bruno could possibly be called admiral, general since the ARMD's are each independent ships they'd have thier own captains making Global/Gloval in charge of the whole group. My money is on general since generals and admirals don't exist in the same service. But his position would be somewhat like a commodore. A captain in charge of a ship and a group of smaller boats commanded by lieutenants. Maybe they'd call him admiral instead. I duno. Thinking about it makes my head hurt.

Just pick one and go with it.

I think, for the sake of what's already there, and not confusing people with Misa's rank of Captain, I'm going to go with Admiral Global.

Rank is settled. But I'm still toying with leaving Gloval as it is as well.

Since not everyone is rank savy of the Army, Navy, & Air Force, IMO for the sake of not confusing those people, go with Admiral. It's as you said Hurin, most English speakers will be able to identify with Misa being a Captain and Global being an Admiral.

Oh, and for the record, I fall under rank savy. :p

And as for Global's name; Please for the sake of keeping DYRL separate from RT, have it as Global. :(

Japanese makes no distinction between the two letters in this case. Looking only at the writting in Katakana it can be written in English either way and be correct. And here you thought L and R were the only problem letters.

Having said that, and even believing that Gloval is easier on the ears, I do like the use of Global to keep it apart from Robotech. Then again, does that mean Roy should be Loy?

I agree, Admiral Global sounds good to me.

Here is a possible way to find out the answer. What is his nationality? That might give a starting point on how it should be spelled. I was under the impression that he was Russian. And Gloval sounds a bit more Russian than Global. Anyone out there familiar with the cyrillic spelling?

So is that why RT went with 'Gloval', or was a fluke they chose that?

I think RT went with "Gloval" because he looks Russian, but the compendium says he's Italian, which makes sense with the "Bruno" part of his name.

I'll always prefer "Gloval" over "Global" because "Global" is kinda silly and despite all the hate against RT, the accent of Gloval in it was sweet.

"Global" just sounds made up. Or like a porn star. Either way...

That's sorta why I was considering keeping it as "Gloval" as well. But, the Macross Pursists have spoken! And if I want to maintain my membership in the cabal, I dare not disobey their will.

I never thought of that. You've given me something to think about.

Hmmm......

I've done a search on "Gloval" and "Italian", and the results are interesting.

There were an over whelming RT references, and misspelling of the word "global".

I went into page 3 with the same results, more misspelling of global and the RT name reference. So as you can see, "Gloval" as a name, is used only in RT and I didn't find any IRL Italian named "Gloval".

So I'm sticking to my guns and say leave it as "Gobal".

I confirm. I am Italian and Gloval doesn't mean anything.

I'm not sure if what "Gloval" means or if it's someones actual last name matter much, because I don't know anyone with the surname "Global" either, and plenty of last names have no "meaning." Although mine, shockingly enough, is a color...

However, classicly in Macross it's been "Global" and if that's the way you want to go, that's how it is. I know I'm always disappointed when he talks in Macross because I remember the RT "Gloval" so vividly as a badass when it was on long ago, having the last name be different isn't that big of a deal.

Except for the pornstar part. Oh well.
